  1. A bit desparate pinning our hopes on loan signings. We've been lucky with recent loanees in Cammy F and the young lads from Ross County but these guys come to learn from the older pros, not save a team from a perilous place.

We've been lucky over the last few years, since promotion, that we've had some great seasons and in all honesty, punched above our weight. The backbone of the title winning team is still there. However, age is catching up om them. We look much better when 40 year old Dillo is in the team but, he's not going to go on for ever.

Unless we get some real gems in the loan market, we are in for a long slog this season - fingers crosse.

  2. Tower out for 10 weeks. Got injured in training with Aberdeen.

On recent showings, we are in for a long season and at the wrong end of the table.

Why take Hester off every week when McAllister is breathing out his ass.

Above comment about Williamson a tad unfair. Thought he looked useless first couple of games but, he is improving.

Positives are hard to find but I thought young Miller Thomson looked decent and Annan and Edinburgh losing.

  3. 4 or 5 years ago we were playing football from the back with some great possession fitba. We were making play offs and in a great place.

We've turned so one dimensional, missing out the midfield and punting the long ball up to McAllister hoping that Hester can somehow latch on to it.

The midfield was so deep today that they were just in front of the defence. The Kelty midfield had so much space that they dominated us.

Unless we get a couple of creative midfielders,  I fear for us this season.

Glad you agree about Gardyne. There was so much expectation when he came in but he has scored and assisted hardly any goals and doesn't create that much, also I hate his floaty corners.

Also can't work out how we are going to play. Webby was missed today and Lyons is a shadow of the player from a few years ago.

Lyons looks like he is sorely lacking in confidence. He needs a couple of good games under him and a ouple of goals to get the fans back on his side again. There's definitely a decent player in there, we've seen him at his best. Just need to prize it out of him again.

I'm really worried about our midfield. We have two genuine goalscorers but we don't have anyone half decent who can feed the ball through from midfield. Gardyne provides nothing in my opinion, Shreive is well out of his depth and Terry will play Terry's game but isn't particularly creative. We haven't replaced Cammy F, Lewis Milne of McKinnon from last season and it's a problem.

Couldn't agree more. Our midfield is very light. Terry played well today, as you say, what he does best. Gardyne is very lightweight and offers little. All the replacements are very inexperienced.

Just a little carp against the Smokies today, were we?

Played really good in the first half and their first was against the run of play, their only attempt at goal in the half. We were by far the better team.

Second half was exact opposite.  We were awful. Cammy made some good stops and we never had an attempt on goal.

A good start today and although the League 1 is the most important I think we should try to make it a League Cup to remember. Last time we were in with a chance of going through to the knock-out stage we lost away at Forfar and that sodded it up. This time lets have a right go at Forfar in Tuesday, then Cowden on Saturday which means we should qualify even if we don't beat the Smokies but I think we can do that as well.

Mon the Mo - lets do it!

cOULD BE A HEAD TO HEAD WITH THE SMOKED HADDOCKS TO SEE WHO WINS THE GROUP.

We haven't played in Montrose in the guts of 50 years competitively so there could well be plenty like me who, despite following Saints for 40 odd years have never been to Links Park. I'm going purely for that reason as there are very few grounds left I haven't seen us play in bar the obvious newer additions. Four of us coming on the train and a day out, I expect a good few others will be seeing this similarly. I would hope 500+.

Posted similar on our own FB page. My first Montrose game was against St. Mirren in 1972. I can't remember any others in the past 51 years, home or away. Wouldn't mind a similar scoreline,  we won 3-1.

GK - Deniz Mehmet - not one I thought would be in this discussion at the start of the season but the number of clean sheets speaks for itself. Also don’t think he’s missed a minute of a season where it feels like there’s been an inordinately high number of different goalkeepers used.

RB - Aaron Comrie - really impressed with his games against us including scoring a good goal at the Recs.

CB - Kyle Benedictus - 3/3 for the Pars so far, absolutely strolled the games against us as it appears he did for most of the season. An absolute leader on the pitch and probably my pick for POTY.

CB - Sean Dillon - bossed his games against us and his battle with fellow Irishman Conor Sammon in the first meeting was an absolute classic tussle. Was surprised with his ability on the ball in the 2nd game with us, was the man starting everything and driving Montrose forward.

LB - Daniel Church - going with a bit of a homer pick with Churchy as Josh Edwards is the obvious pick, but he has been a revelation for us this season. His 2 goals and 6 assists in 26 games shades Edwards 2 & 5 in 32 so will use that as the excuse for picking him! A player I wouldn’t have re-signed last summer, went from losing his place at the start of the season (despite being the only left back at the club) to becoming one of the first names on the team sheet.

RM - Calum Morrison - for me he has the ability to be one of the best players in League 1 and is always a threat against us. His pace is frightening and although his final decision making has been a bit questionable in the past, seems to have been far more consistent this season.

CM - Iain Wilson - wanted a more defensive midfielder so going with Wilson over the more attacking Frizzell (who has also been excellent) although both have had injuries that have affected their seasons. Oozes class in the middle of the park and always seems to be in the right place at the right time.

CM - Matty Todd - only 21 but looks an incredible talent who has also chipped in with goals. Would probably be the only player I would say could usurp Benedictus in my league POTY vote.

LM - Gabby McGill - probably played more through the middle or on the right but his 13 goals and 8 assists have to get him in my team. His goals were right at the heart of Airdrie’s phenomenal goal scoring run.

CF - Ruari Paton - should have scored a lot more than the 3 goals he got against us this season, looks an absolute handful for defenders to deal with. Be interesting where he ends up next year.

CF - Callum Gallagher - always seems to score against Alloa and, to be fair, pretty much everyone else this season. Always regarded him as a bit of a tap in merchant hanging about the 6 yard box but his work rate and link up outside the area this year caught my eye.

Glad to see Dillon get a mention. He's been excellent for us this season. Despite his age, he's only missed a couple of games. Not sure if we'll get another season out of him but he'll be hard to replace.

Decent 1st half performance but a poor 2nd half.

Piss poor 1st half performance but better second half (from a Mo perspective). As many have said, we've gone backwards.  Our first half of the season has saved us from being in a dog fight with Clyde and Peterheid. We lost all our loan players in January and never replaced any of them. Possibly resting on our laurels to save cash based on the early season results. We'll see what Petrie is really made of next season because we've still got the majority of the team that got us promoted 6 years ago. They are an ageing group and will have to replace a few players soon.

Personal favourite was when McAllister charged right through the back of Hamilton. Ref correctly booked McAllister for it. Then when Hamilton got up (after receiving treatment), ref decided to book him as well. Genuinely no idea what that booking was for.

For being a greetin faced (unt all match long.

  12. Certainly not a classic. First half was a non event. Mo came out of the blocks at the start of the second half and scored on the back of some sustained pressure.  We then sat back and let QOS back into it. Thought we'd blown it when the penalty was awarded but that attempt made Harry Kanes look like a close shave. The ref let a lot go but it looked a rather robust challenge just before the pen leaving Brown lying injured. Big Kerr Waddle certainly merited his MOM award. Him and Dillon were solid at the back.

  13. We've been spoiled since Petrie came on the scene. Play offs every season and the title win became the norm. We've been punching well above our weight since promotion to league 1 and probably become far too complacent. Our aim at the start of every season is 8th or better. As it stands, it would appear that We've done that comfortably. Having said that, the squad is aging and fragile and needs some new faces. Time to earn your corn, SP.
