My ignorance maybe doesn't extend to cultural richness. I don't care who we play, I just want to win.

Whether its a team from the east, west, north or south.....of we win it doesn't matter who it is we are playing. I'm assuming all fans are the same.

Fair play to you for trying some of the local ale shops in Denny, that takes some bravery. emoji23.png

My views probably do not follow the norm. I love visiting different grounds and appreciating a club’s infrastructure, setting, integration and importance to their local community. The position taken by the West Lothian clubs is very sad as they are all part of our “football family” but their position has to be respected.

    Really? Cultural richness?

Its football, 11 v 11. Culture matters not.

There is no football dna....its kicking a ball about a park trying to outscore an opponent.

Having visited Westfield Park and a local pub up the road in Denny centre and interacting socially, there is certainly cultural richness in the eyes of a football supporter. I was very impressed and enjoyed my visit. This is what I mean in terms of DNA rather than performance on the field on a particular weekend.

I'm not sure the EoS is weaker as a result of the remaining WL clubs not joining. One WL EoS club has beat Cowdenbeath this season and played St.Mirren. Another was live on telly v Falkirk.

Certainly not weaker in terms of the strength of the top teams in the EOSFL Premier. But weaker in terms of the overall DNA of football in the East of Scotland in terms of cultural richness and diversity.

  4. Positive article from The Gazette:

Jamie McKim urges Junior clubs to stick together in West of Scotland move

    Quote

JOHNSTONE Burgh manager Jamie McKim believes the club’s decision to apply to join the West of Scotland Football League is “forward thinking” and “progressive.”

The Keanie Park outfit announced last week that it was to apply for a place in the new ‘Tier 6’ of the Scottish football pyramid, which gives Junior clubs the chance to work their way up the leagues.

This wasn’t previously possible and follows a similar move by ex-Junior clubs from the east of Scotland, including Sauchie Juniors, in 2018.

Nearly 50 clubs from the West of Scotland Juniors had already announced their intention to apply for a place in the new league before last night’s deadline.

McKim said: “I was of the opinion – and we all were, as a club – that Junior clubs should stick together whatever they do and I think that’s what looks like happening.
“The vast majority of clubs have expressed their interest one way or another.
“It’s progressive and forward thinking and that’s the type of club we are trying to be, so hopefully it’s a good thing for us going forward.

“If the Junior sides break into two then it maybe becomes a poorer product for supporters to come and watch. The fact that most of the Junior clubs are staying together is a big strong point for me.”

Meanwhile, club treasurer Brian Williams has released a statement in a bid to ease fans’ worries regarding the club’s finances during the shutdown.

The Scottish FA have ruled that no games should take place at any level due to the Covid-19 outbreak, with clubs across the country being hit hard as they have no income from gate receipts.

Williams said: “I would like to reassure the supporters who are worried about the finances of the club.

“The Burgh are not in any financial danger at this moment in time, although that could change depending on how long we are closed down.

“We are hoping the season will continue at some point and the team can continue their good form.

“Finances will be stretched and I will keep you all updated.”

The full statement is available on Johnstone Burgh’s social media channels.

Taking Jamie McKim's point (highlighted in bold) a stage further, the inability of the West Lothian clubs to work with the EoSFL has undoubtedly created a weaker product in the East of Scotland.

In addition it is understood that there two Youth clubs that have also applied. Details of these clubs are currently unknown.

A constitution of up to 68 clubs divided into 4 conferences is anticipated.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS HAS CLOSED.

  6. So the emerging 66 club WoSFL looks set to have 4 conferences  of 16 or 17 clubs for the 2020/21 season. What next?

Do we go back to 4 linear divisions from Tier 6 to Tier 9 (which would format as 16-16-16-18) for 2021/22? Or do we split Tier 8 into North and South and jettison Tier 9 (which would format as 16-16-17/17)? My preference would be the latter as it would generate more local games at Tier 8 and offer a better route for progression.

Dumfries has a fairly substantial Sunday League with several decent sides but in general it’s the overall costs incurred by a Senior Club that will deter most from considering the step up I’d estimate ! There’s nothing in the West of the region any more and ultimately if there’s ever any future merger with the West then Girvan , Maybole , Kello obviously , Craigmark etc would be the closest current junior sides to the normal South geographical area

I just hope that the SoSFL can keep its club numbers up. Given the dearth of potential replacements there maybe increasing pressure to allow in a few Development/Community sides from Senior clubs within the WoSFL region.

I suppose the other option is that if numbers in the SoSFL seriously reduce in the next few years, this may be the factor to facilitate a planned amalgamation or general incorporation of clubs within the WoSFL.

Regionalised would clearly be a better option although not necessarily to everyone’s liking ! Scottish Cup trips I can assure you are in general extortionate affairs with little chance realistically of success although they are usually the highlight of the calendar and I’d encourage everyone to go for a License if they can. The longest trip for us currently are around 150 miles to Sanquhar for the Nithsdale match and although it’s perfectly acceptable it’s not something anyone financially really needs on a week in week out basis and it’ll be the same for those at the opposite reaches of the South region ( Uppers , Caley Braves and at the time Bonnyton etc ) coming this way to ourselves , Creetown , Wigtown and add another 50 round trip to Stranraer. We actually relished the thought of the new West it was an incredibly exciting option but in all fairness at this moment in time wasn’t the best move for the Club or our young team - another couple of Seasons in the South gaining experience and who knows what the future might hold !

Will Newton Stewart (and other ambitious SoSFL clubs)  in the future be faced with the issue of contravening "geographical integrity" and not be permitted to make sideway moves to the WoSFL? The SoSFL hold a very strong bargaining chip and are on an equal footing with the EoSFL and emerging WoSFL and you may well find that by not taking advantage of the current window you have allowed the door to close.

Lets just be happy the west clubs are now finally on board.lets turn our attention to the north.

The other huge issue that is now going to emerge is the promotion/relegation arrangements between the Tier 6 Leagues and the Lowland League. To date the Lowland League have been a model of efficiency, fairness and inventiveness. But they currently have an unfortunate Achilles heel with just one relegation spot. Soon we will have our next battle to achieve fair and sustainable promotion/relegation arrangements between Tier 5 and Tier 6.

Posted this before Glasgow uni have applied.strathclyde uni have NOT applied. only one other non junior club  HAS applied along with 63 junior clubs a total of 65 clubs for the new wosfl.

Thanks for the info. Where would this leave Bonnyton Thistle located firmly within WoSFL territory but would remain in the SoSFL? Does not quite fit with other info.

  17. More positivity - this time from Lanark United in the Daily Record

Lanark United boss says new league set-up presents a high level test

Colin Slater relishes the chance of a crack at top-rated teams.

    Quote

Boss Colin Slater says the proposal is becoming a more attractive prospect the more he thinks about it, because it gives them a crack at top-rated teams.

While he acknowledges that United couldn’t compete financially with the big boys, Slater reckons they could hold their own on the pitch.

He said: “I wasn’t sure about the West of Scotland League to begin with, because I’m a long-term ‘junior’, but the more I see of it the more I think of it as a proposition.

“The club needs to stay in the pack and not be left behind. It’s a more attractive idea and it’s where we want to be.

“Some of the teams will be hard to compete with, but we have competed against them in the past, we’ve had decent cup runs.

“It’s an opportunity to play teams that are currently higher up than we are, and we want to play at as high a level as we can – that’s why we’re there.

“We are ambitious, but finances might dictate what we can do with that.

“Financially, we’re not in the same park as some of these guys, and funds are dwindling at all clubs just now. It’s week to week for a lot of clubs just now and it’s unknown how long this is going to go on for.

    “It’s an unique situation.”

I am pleased to announce that Glasgow University FC has applied to join the West of Scotland League, as confirmed by Donnie Fergusson (football club secretary ) this morning.  A formal announcement will follow.

Really great news Robert. I have amended the listing of applicants above.

  19. An excellent report on Rossvale from the Kirkintilloch Herald:

Rossvale looking to bright future in new West of Scotland League

Rossvale have confirmed their intention to join the new West of Scotland League set-up which will operate as part of the pyramid system.

    Quote

The club have formally applied to join the new league which will operate at their tier below the current Lowland League.

Details of how the league will operate can only be confirmed once a decision on the outcome of the current campaign - currently on hold due to the coronavirus shutdown - is reached.

But if, as seems likely, the season is declared null and void, the current West Region junior clubs intending to move across - including Rossvale and Kirkintilloch Rob Roy - expect to be placed into several Conferences for next season, along with clubs from other leagues moving into the new set-up.

The leading teams in each Conference would then form a West of Scotland Premier League the following season.

Unlike most clubs Rossvale are not turning their backs on a long history in the junior game, the Bishopbriggs-based club having only joined the junior ranks nine years ago.

Club chairman Dom McInally said: “At Rossvale we see our club as being still a new and fresh set up to the junior ranks and the rise to now be playing in the top tier is remarkable to say the least.

“This new set up which allows all clubs an avenue to at some point if ambitious thinking enough to progress through the pyramid system and onto the Lowland League.

“This was always a target for our club when it was first started, to see how far we could push ourselves within the semi-pro game and beyond. This avenue has just been handed to every club and one that Rossvale grabbed with both hands.

“I think the main thing for ourselves is that we must keep improving and pushing Rossvale Juniors onto bigger and greater achievements over the coming years.

“There are massive plusses with the new set up but for your mainstay clubs who have given some over 100 years service to the SJFA this time is now coming to an end unfortunately.

“These cubs have only known junior football and for clubs, supporters alike they have given their lifetime to keep these great clubs ticking over year after year.

“It is an institution within Scottish football that is now nearing an end but it is not of course all doom and gloom, we all have a chance to move forward together and embrace & improve on what we provide for our supporters each Saturday.

    Pyramid Statement 6

    Tuesday 24 March

The scheduled meeting last night with Lowland, East of Scotland, South of Scotland and West Region Juniors took place via video conferencing due to current travel and person-to-person restrictions in place.

A great deal of common ground was established.

There was agreement on a potential way forward as follows:

    • In order to ensure there is a firm record of registration and a database of information for the West of Scotland Football League, the West Junior FA are in agreement that the Lowland League application form should be completed and sent to George Fraser at geo_fraser@hotmail.co.uk.
    • To give Clubs more time to make these applications under current circumstances, the deadline has been extended to Tuesday 7 April. That will be the last date applications will be accepted.
    • Clubs currently members of the Scottish Junior FA are fully entitled to retain membership and, if so, will be eligible to continue to play in The Scottish Junior Cup. The Competition Rules of that Cup will be altered to reflect the need to ensure League Fixtures have priority.
    • There is no limit to the number of teams that will be accepted; with regards to compliance with ground criteria guidelines, the Leagues will work with Clubs with the expectation that necessary steps will be made over time.
    • It was proposed that the new league could be organised on a Conference basis, with final set up dependant on numbers. The Conferences will be for one season only.

There remains much to do to get the West of Scotland Football League up and running.

The parties are aware that the formation of any new league is subject to approval from the Scottish FA and discussions will continue in that regard.

All parties at the meeting last night are committed to continue to work together, to support the creation of the final piece of the Pyramid feeding into the Lowland League.

George Fraser [Lowland League] John Greenhorn [East of Scotland League] Colin Holden [ South of Scotland League] Gordon Ronney [ West Juniors]
