    Pyramid Statement 6

    Tuesday 24 March

The scheduled meeting last night with Lowland, East of Scotland, South of Scotland and West Region Juniors took place via video conferencing due to current travel and person-to-person restrictions in place.

A great deal of common ground was established.

There was agreement on a potential way forward as follows:

    • In order to ensure there is a firm record of registration and a database of information for the West of Scotland Football League, the West Junior FA are in agreement that the Lowland League application form should be completed and sent to George Fraser at geo_fraser@hotmail.co.uk.
    • To give Clubs more time to make these applications under current circumstances, the deadline has been extended to Tuesday 7 April. That will be the last date applications will be accepted.
    • Clubs currently members of the Scottish Junior FA are fully entitled to retain membership and, if so, will be eligible to continue to play in The Scottish Junior Cup. The Competition Rules of that Cup will be altered to reflect the need to ensure League Fixtures have priority.
    • There is no limit to the number of teams that will be accepted; with regards to compliance with ground criteria guidelines, the Leagues will work with Clubs with the expectation that necessary steps will be made over time.
    • It was proposed that the new league could be organised on a Conference basis, with final set up dependant on numbers. The Conferences will be for one season only.

There remains much to do to get the West of Scotland Football League up and running.

The parties are aware that the formation of any new league is subject to approval from the Scottish FA and discussions will continue in that regard.

All parties at the meeting last night are committed to continue to work together, to support the creation of the final piece of the Pyramid feeding into the Lowland League.

Let all teams at Tier 5 and below enter and rename it The Junior Memorial Cup.

I would rename and revamp it as the Junior Challenge Cup and amalgamate the JC and SCC.

Another option would be to relaunch as the Junior Heritage Cup.

But perhaps the best option would be to name it after a major sponsor willing to provide a “shed load of money” covering each round.

  3. Positive "newsbite" from Lesmahagow in Daily Record

Lesmahagow boss Robert Irving says West of Scotland League can revive juniors

    Quote

Irving says he's all for change, and the new set-up is something a bit different.

Lesmahagow boss Robert Irving welcomes the West of Scotland League, and hopes it breathes new life into the junior game.

Irving relishes change and says the game in Lanarkshire had become stale, but warned league bosses not to send them on too many trips outside of the county.

The ’Gow gaffer, who doesn’t expect his side to play again this season, said: “It’s the only way forward. It has got a bit stale, so this might revive it and bring it back to life.

“I don’t know how they will work out the divisions, but we’ll wait and see.

“This could inject new life into it, and it’s something a bit different.

“The Lowland League came out of nowhere and they took a lot of players away from our clubs and I think the West of Scotland League will be a bit like that, but hopefully we will still be able to attract some of the top players.

“I like change, I’m all for anything changing, and it was a long while ago that the leagues were last changed. I like it to be shaken up.

“Our league was quite local, we were in with teams like Larkhall Thistle, Lanark United, Carluke Rovers and Bellshill Athletic, so there were 16 derbies right away.

“With the greatest respect, if you’re heading down to Maybole, Irvine, Largs or somewhere like that then the supporters are not going to travel.

“We need to see how it’s going to be set up but I’m all for the new league.”

I understand why some of these teams didnt want to make the effort.
Bathgate for example. Decent pitch, nice wee ground but no one cares. Hardly any supporters, a tiny committee and , as with many clubs, not that well off. The team gets worse every year and so a West Lothian wee league will be less costly and they are not pissing anyone off by staying.

With the exception of myself and around 50 other keyboard Pyramid warriors!

Seriously we tried to make a strong case for the West Lothian clubs to join the rest of the football family in the pyramid but again spectacularly failed.

Wishing all the remaining West Lothian Junior teams a great season for 2020/21 (hopefully without further impact of Covid-19).

However the Pyramid and this thread (or its successor) will not disappear and it will be time to reconvene on the West Lothian issue next year.

Shotts boss John McKeown hopes new league set-up encourages fans

    Quote

Shotts Bon Accord boss John McKeown hopes being part of the new West of Scotland League set-up can coax fans back to Hannah Park.

McKeown hopes being part of a new, vibrant league that would place junior clubs just below the Lowland and Highland Leagues, can bring a bit of excitement back and get supporters flocking through the gates.

“We have a fantastic social club and a change of situation could coax a lot of fans back. If we could do that it would be great to see more people coming through the gate.

“It might also force clubs to improve their facilities a bit, and that could be interesting for a few of them.”

McKeown says the new set-up is a welcome breath of fresh air for the junior game and change was long overdue.

“I think it’s the only way ahead,” he said, “and we will certainly apply for it, but we will need to wait and see how it all pans out. In the long-term we have the potential of moving up the pyramid, and it’s an exciting prospect.

    “I suppose it’s a situation where junior football needs a wee shake-up."

Coronavirus Scotland: Manager calls for season to be scrapped despite his side being top of league

    Quote

A football manager has called for the season to be scrapped – despite his team being at the top of the league.

Darvel Juniors boss Michael Kennedy says the season should be declared null and void due to the new West of Scotland League which will kick-off next season.

It looks likely that all Junior teams will join the new league.

Darvel and Hurlford United, along with the likes of Auchinleck Talbot, Kilwinning Rangers, Troon and Beith, have already applied to join.

And with conferences due to be set up with geography in mind, Kennedy admits that final league positions probably won’t matter going into the pyramid.

Wondering whether Carluke, Lanark and Lesmahagow are thinking of joining the West Lothian rump. Not much of a distance to travel. Would be a bit of a shame if they don't join the WOSL but I suppose they have an alternative option.

EDIT: Thorniewood and St Roch's are hardly a huge distance from say Whitburn either.

St Roch's application should be a formality with reference to their Facebook:

recently published a FAQ about the new West of Scotland League which is a good read for anyone who hasn't yet delved into all the newness! So good, in fact, we've reproduced the guts of it here!

Bearing in mind the only mention of this is on the junior thread. As well as the CFC there is a Edin South Vics in the LEAFA who play at Fernieside, Tynecastle's old old ground.

Well researched. It will be interesting to see what develops. There could even be a possible link up between the two. Fernieside looks as though it would need a lot of development though:

    Club Statement – WOSFL

St Anthony’s FC has reached one of its most difficult and important decisions in its 118 year old history as a Junior club. We have now officially applied for membership of the new West of Scotland Football League. This move will allow us to take our place in the Scottish Football Pyramid.

We take this opportunity in the knowledge that we can keep our SJFA membership and compete next year in one of the most prestigious trophies in Scottish Football, The Scottish Junior Cup.

Having made our decision, We can now look forward to a new chapter in the clubs history with excitement and anticipation of what lies ahead for St Anthony’s as a senior club, proud of its junior history and its remaining membership of the SJFA, Reaching club licensing will be a priority, which would allow us to compete in another famous old trophy, The Scottish Cup.

    Thank You

If Newton Stewart have applied for the WoSFL I wonder what the thinking is there...

    Newton Stewart to East Kilbride - 1 h 49 min (76.5 mi) via A77

    Newton Stewart to Moffat - 1 h 31 min (68.9 mi) via A75 and A701 - If no tractors!

Newton Stewart can offer a football hub in their part of Dumfries and Galloway.

On the other hand the info may be a red herring.

Five clubs have confirmed their request to form part of the West of Scotland Football League (WoSFL) and enter a pyramid system.

The pyramid system could see Junior clubs enter the Lowland League, where they could follow in the footsteps of the likes of Edinburgh City and gain promotion to the SPFL.

The latest club to announce their application is Beith Juniors, who claimed it was ‘likely’ that all West Region teams will join new division.

On Monday, they confirmed in a statement that they felt applying to the WoSFL for the new season was the “only way forward”.

As football remains closed down due to coronavirus, clubs have still been busy at work behind the scenes to lay foundations for next season.
