  1. Our squad depth's been tested several times with injuries and we've used alternative options. (Taylor, Hyam, Jack, Armstrong, Ferguson, Ralston, Souttar, McKenna, Clark, McLean, Cooper etc) They've been bedded in over a period of years.

Depends if you think the players below that will make a significant difference. Turnbull and Fraser have been in squads before reasonably recently.

  2. More contentious, but it's arguably better to lose players from positions where we have some strength (Midfield, Full-back) than where we don't (Strikers, Goalkeepers, Centre-Backs)

  3. I said it before, but the squads going up to 26 is a massive plus for Scotland as it provides room to gamble on some core players even if they might miss one or two of the group games or are only able to play a percentage of each game due to fitness concerns.

  4. Hello,

I noticed the number of "members who have voted" don't match the total when you add up the total of the individual votes. It isn't the first poll where this has happened. The total votes equal 60, but the number of member who've voted is 62. I looked for the answer on here, but it appears not to have been addressed previously.

I suspect one possibility is that 2 people have tried to cast two votes in this case from alias accounts (or 1 person has tried to cast 3 votes) that are recorded as the number of members who's voted, but don't count to the percentage. It could also just be some other kind of error. The question is basically why might the numbers not match?

If him being dropped for one game meant he was out of the picture, scoring twice in a row must mean he’s on fucking fire.

Spot on, the boy's on fire. He was out of form, but on the turn of a coin he's now the man in form.

    1. Goals. Confidence. Man in form.
    2. Fox in the box. Needs to start against Germany. Let's get this clamor started.
    3. Get him capped, call him up, tie the boy down - let's see what he can do in the friendlies. Big Daddy Dykes. Goals, Goals, Goals, hungry for goals. 🔥⚽

Yeah, winning is #1 for fans.

Playing out from the back can look great and be impressive to the eye when it works.

I suppose, as touched on, when it is averagey teams trying it in the EPL or EFL and it isn't bringing results or even not working within a game it can turn the fans rather quickly.

I appreciate this can be the same with a more pragmatic style.

Football fans being fickle, who would have thunk it haha.

That's why I mentioned Scotland. They will have the same problem an averagey side in the EPL/EFL have this summer. It will be decided on the results by the fans, with hindsight whether we should have 'had a go' or been more pragmatic - that's basically it, that's how fans by and large work.

Weird how this style has caught on. Swansea fans wanted rid of Martin because he persisted with this despite some hilarious goals conceded direct from keeper mis-kicks.

Then you get Leicester fans wanting Maresca out because he plays a direct style with lots of counter-attacking. Essentially what Ranieri used to win them the league.

It depends, when it works it looks great. Playing out from the back isn't necessarily patient, controlled pass you to death kind of stuff. It can be rapid almost counter-attacking. Obviously the clip below doesn't show the f**k ups.

It's about expectations rising. First fan's want winning football, then they want style - in that order. Look at David Moyes, winning isn't enough anymore.

It’s more than annoying when it’s a roundabout you take on a daily basis, and the ‘South’ approach to it is two lanes at the roundabout itself, but only one lane straight through on the most-used ‘North’ exit. I have been involved in multiple near crashes as a ‘right lane bomber straight through’ has done their bombing from behind me while I am taking the North exit from the correct lane and they nearly slam into me when ‘two into one does not go’. They weren’t at the roundabout beside me and we both pulled away together or anything, they are out of sight behind you, and appear like a flash from your blind spot. Sometimes you just know that folk are genuinely lost or unsure of where to be, but you also just know when it’s kunts knowingly being kunts. For what? To avoid being behind a couple of cars for under ten seconds?

I understand, Why not use the bomber lane, do a full loop of the roundabout, exit the 'North' exit and crack on. That's what I'd do. I know you shouldn't have to, but it's just a practical way of keeping the blood pressure down and avoiding a smash.

If you counted all the goals conceded through making an arse of playing out from the back, vs all the goals scored after 'beating the press', the aggregate score over a season would be about 73-6.

Playing out from the back is about trying to keep the ball, possession and control of the game rather than scoring goals. The alternative of clearing your lines just tends to give the ball straight back to the opposition. It's a risk/reward thing.

Scotland will face the same problem at the Euro's against Germany. Do Scotland try control the game with the ball (The Netherlands) or do we try to control the game without the ball (Spain). I couldn't really say what the best approach to take is.

The ‘red car’ image here, is the ‘kunt’ image, because this is where the kunts who cannot be arsed waiting behind a couple of ‘blue cars’ try to bomb past and cut across to go straight through the roundabout. The ‘straight through’ at this roundabout is single lane. Every, fcuking, day. Kuntos.

Aye, it's annoying. One solution is to block them off by occupying that lane. At that roundabout it would mean you either do a full loop before you find your exit, you take the wrong exit or you copy their behaviour.

It's very effective at traffic lights at stopping similar behaviour, the downside being that you rely on someone to let you in. It just comes down to how much it annoys you or what your mood is like on the day. I tend to just let it go mostly, but have it in my back pocket if I'm in a bad mood anyway.

I think it’s great that they’re [the supporters] onside. I think it’s great that they expect their team to be competitive. It’s all part of the process: The more you do, the more people want. The more successful you are, the more success people want, so you have to embrace that and get on with it.

It’s around the midway point from the disappointment of the March camp to the June camp. The excitement will ramp up as the media spotlight turns towards the tournament so probably the best time to do this type of post before the frenzy hits. So what are you expecting from Scotland at Euro-2024 and does it match what you think our aim should be?

I don’t have any expectations for the tournament. I think the aim should be to qualify from our group, but if we fall short it wouldn't necessarily be failure. Steve Clarke suggested for the most part that the aim is just to be competitive and see where it takes us although has also touched on trying to get out of the group. Clarke did an interview with Tom English that was released today which touches on the aims for the tournament amongst other things.

Most of the comments made by Steve Clarke on the subject since we qualified back in October:

Driving in Spain & France a few years ago, my wife was watching the feed from my smartwatch on the phone. She said my pulse rate shot up at the big roundabouts, the worst being a ridiculous one in Valencia. I could have told her that without the watch - it's amazing how tightly your buttocks can grip onto the seat when you're shitting it.

Just drive as if you always have right of way even if you don't. That's the key. I quite like them as it's chaos rules and you just go for it and see what happens. It's like when a pundit says if you don't commit fully to the tackle you're more likely to get injured. Just pile on in there, take a leap of faith even if cars are flying past you/in front of you.

Appreciate the point your making but the pedant in me feels the need to point out McKenna wont be returning to Forest. He's out of contract and will leave in the summer.

I was just being silly, but I've edited it for Ryan Fraser. Irving has done his compatriot a favour. Helpful result for Max Johnston and Sturm Graz that Klagenfurt managed to beat Salzburg. They have a head to head this weekend, but it's in Salzburg. 4 games to go, 3 points ahead.

I don't think he used the expansion to 26 to "take 3 younger players along". Patterson was the second choice right-back and would presumably have been picked even if it was a 23, I don't think he was a "bonus" player. Turnbull definitely was, and then one of Fleck/Gilmour, since I think only one would have gone otherwise. I'm not sure who the other beneficiary was, probably James Forrest, who'd had a fairly injury ravaged season and had only played once for Scotland in about 18 months.

Not maybe as conclusive as I remember, but here's the quote I referred to earlier.

    Quote

With the COVID situation there was an enlarged squad so it was a chance for me to bring three extra players in. I looked at what was around, what I could do. Looking at the younger ones in the squad at that time it was David Turnbull, Nathan Patterson and Billy [Gilmour], who I’d obviously heard a lot about through my contacts at Chelsea at the time.

I wonder if a player who would have been picked in the 23-man squad might lose out when it goes to a 26-man squad for the Summer. Euro-2020 could be an example of where that happened if Nathan Patterson and James Forrest ticked more boxes than Liam Palmer (+1).

If for example Anthony Ralston (+1) were to miss out in favour of Ryan Fraser and Max Johnston - that sort of idea in terms of the combination of players rather than just direct 1 for 1 swaps.

Yes, I know that m8. He's still off to West Ham in the summer to begin his career there.

aye, KT's off to Arsenal and Ryan Fraser's off to Newcastle in the summer too so looking forward to that too!

Andy Irving just scored a hat-trick against Red Bull Salzburg. 8 goals and 5 assists this season in the Austrian top flight. Off to West Ham in the summer. He's on a really upward trajectory in his career.

He's on loan from West Ham

I did think that until fairly recently. Clarke has subsequently said [recently] that the additional three spaces were used for those three. I dont have the quote to hand - but ill find it, post it and you can make up your own mind.

I understand the point re: Patterson.  It's possible Fraser and Forrest were O'Donnell's cover. I believe Forrest played RWB when he came on (for O'Donnell) against Czech Rep.

  18. A couple of articles for the collection this morning.

    Spoiler

Kai Havertz is making fools of those – well me, actually – who labelled him an “Arteta vanity project” when he struggled to identify his place in the team earlier in the season.

    Phil McNulty

More bad than good on the BBC sport page. Where's the analysis, the research and hard work to build a logical conclusion? It's just words on a page around a general theme. What's the point in an opinion piece if it's not backed up with reasoning? and what's the point of the article if the reasoning doesn't have some originality?

As soon as I hear phrases such as "vanity project" or "crisis" I know the article won't be for me.
