So basically what you're saying is that you follow blindly whatever Clarke thinks then? Would you jump off a bridge if he told you too aswell?

Fans have a voice in a game and can also see things to improve the team believe it or not.

You said I was arrogant? what makes you think you know better than Steve Clarke? The guy's been working in football for many a long year and along come you to tell him what he should be doing. A guy that's worked as assistant to Mourinho, managed with success in the English Premier League, been successful at Killie and yes at Scotland.

Do you also enjoy telling firemen how to do their job or maybe you like to tell schoolteachers how to teach your kids? That's rank behaviour.

If we went by your theory then we would be picking the same formation, same 11 every single game until the players retire from international duty. You really are stuck in your ways when it comes to introducing new players into the fold and tend to show arrogance towards anyone that would like to see a player given more of a chance.

It isn't my theory. It's Steve Clarke's. He's discussed most of these issues and his reasons (which tend to be logical and reasonable) for doing what he's doing via the media. I try to understand and relay that point of view.

I understand you're a newcomer to the board so you probably haven't seen that I did a post on the age profile of the team and Clarke's intention to avoid a 'hard reset'. My own personal views are informed by that.

Are there players I'd like to see get more game time or be selected? Maybe one or two, but I respect the fact that he's in a far better position than me as a fan on the outside to make decisions around the team.

  3. Surprised no-one else picked this story up (about a month old). I like Steve Clarke, but it's a bit over the top and unnecessary.

COULD a statue of one of Scotland’s Euro 2024 heroes be on its way to New Cumnock in time for the finals in Germany?

Hopeful officials are in talks to place a statue of team manager Steve Clarke in the centre of the town this summer. Every possible site has been explored – but it is understood that the life size bronze sculpture would temporarily replace the Robert Burns statue in Castle. Councilors and officials are in advanced talks about the statue and where it could be sited once Scotland exit the competition.

Where has he slandered McGregor? Bit strong of a statement.

    Here. Probably referring to this.

McGregor, if you think he could ever have been voted best midfielder in Serie A your in dreamland.

Plus the repeated calls over years for Callum McGregor to be dropped in favour of the flavour of the month whether that be Billy Gilmour, Scott McTominay, Ryan Christie playing as a #6 or to get Lewis Ferguson in the team usually something along the following lines:

We need to make space for other players and Callum McGregor is the one who needs to give way because he only plays fur Celtic blah blah blah. As soon as anyone comes along who is doing well in shape or form at club level in midfield the go to is: Get him in the team, McGregor has to go to make way.

    Same old dire conversation.

I'd trust that system more than your eye for a player thats for sure.

As long as we're not trusting your eye then I'll take that.

I recall you saying you could just tell Billy Gilmour would be world class after watching him at Euro-2020. I said you're better off waiting a couple of years before making such a bold statement, but you insisted you knew football and here we are four years later still looking forward to that happening.

Callum McGregor won the SFA Players' player of the year during Lewis Ferguson's final year at Aberdeen. That was two years ago. Callum McGregor isn't a fashionable player, but he is often undervalued by Scotland fans for some unknown reason.

Hes scored 6 goals in the league, do you think he's the highest scoring midfielder?

For reference the awards are decided as such.

The ranking for each category is determined through a weighted calculation elaborated by Ernst & Young, based on statistical reporting by Stats Perform and Opta Sports and supported by data tracking provided by Netco Sports.[1]

The previous winner in the last couple of seasons have been.

22-23 Nicolo Barella who scored 6 goals.

21-22 Marcelo Brozovic a defensive midfielder who scored 2 goals.

20-21 Nicole Barella again, 3 goals

Hes a young scot thriving abroad, so let's build him up rather than try and bring him down.

A weighted calculation based on statistical reporting. Well that clears it all up then. Worthy winner.

Doesn't score enough goals to win that kind of award. Matt O' Riley probably would be able to because he scores more goals. Sadly that's what these awards tend to come down to.

I can visualise us being booed off the park against Finland after a narrow defeat, as our send off to the Euro’s due to this “bad form”….

Hope not. They're warmup games after all, our equivalent of pre-season games. Punters expectations must be carefully juggled to keep them onside.

I thought it was a pretty nothing article, to be honest. Merely just a Clickbait title before saying Scotland manager considers Scottish player for Scotland squad.

There will be tears if Ross McCrorie is called up along with Jacob Brown and Ryan Jack.

We accumulated more points than the likes of Georgia, Norway and Cyprus so i'm not gonna get a boner and say we are now some fantastic team all of a sudden.

There are clearly a lot of improvement needed going by some of the latter performances of late. Do you not think the players will be thinking similarly and Clarke will be working hard on this? I would be pissed of if they weren't tbh.

I think they'll look at what they did well, what they did poorly in March if it relates to the games in the Euros and discard the rest. Maybe look at aspects of the Spain games, even the game in Oslo.

Maybe work on general principles, situational stuff, set plays and at some point shift the focus to opposition analysis and our match specific strategy.

I don't think they'll need a pick me up. The two friendlies probably about fitness and maybe test one or two things and for the fans hopefully win at least one of the games to get the fans and media off their back and all the 'winless run' crap. They want the Tartan Army onside.

Form is not black and white, it's one of many indicators of a teams current level of performance. However, surely you'd want your team to be going into the tournament prepared and confident in our tactics, formation, trust for your teamates, trust in your own ability, belief that we can go out and beat the other teams etc. If there is any self-doubt due to the recent losses then this will have a negative impact on the team more likely than not (not saying this is the case as we seem to have a strong mentality).

The vast majority of the team have been through good and bad runs. Shown strength through adverse results and turned bad 'form'. They automatically qualified for the tournament.

Why would their confidence, belief and trust in each other falter. They simply have to looked at how they  bounced back in similar situations. You're barking up the wrong tree on this.

Maybe you're transferring your own lack of belief onto the team.

  12. I think it was more a case of us trying to control the game without the ball. Similar to Ukraine away and Spain home & away. We carried some luck in both the Norway and Ukraine game in particular. It can be effective. Northern Ireland did it to us.

I think it'll be similar against Germany. We've tried to control the game with the ball in friendlies against England, France and the Netherlands as part of evolving the team. It's showed promise, we've done better in each game - but we're probably not ready to do it away to Germany in a game with something on it.

The Nations League might be a different kettle of fish.

Might he have said it to put it on the Irish radar? Appreciate his agent is likely making Ireland aware of it in the background anyway but once you mention it publicly then the Irish media might start to speculate, etc..........

I'm not too sure, just when I heard it I thought why is he even mentioning it - why did he bring it up?

Clarke apparently wants Doak in the squad for the Euro's.

Probably going to be a wait and see job. The Sun are reporting it. No sources, just the usual: "SunSport understands Steve Clarke is considering taking the uncapped 18-year-old Anfield prodigy to Germany." 😬

    https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/12628018/scotland-steve-clarke-sensational-euro-2024-liverpool-ben-doak/

Maybe it's also being reported elsewhere, wouldn't surprise me if it's just made up.

Ben Doak, James Forrest and Danny Armstrong. They won't all be going, Maybe none of them - wouldn't that be a laugh.

  14. 37 minutes ago, Butters Scotch said:

Why? He would rather play for Scotland by the sounds of it but he's accepted how hard it is for him to break into the Scotland squad and has been on form the last couple of seasons but still can't break in. He's coming up for 27 also so maybe he's thinking the Ireland route will be better for him if he doesn't break in soon.

I didn't think he needed to say it, he wasn't asked - the interviewer clearly didn't know about eligibility for Ireland.

I therefore interpreted that as being a bit manipulative because as you've said it's clear he'd rather play for Scotland and so it's creating a pressure. I think it counts against players when they start playing games - just get on with your football and see if it's enough. It was similar with the Ryan Gauld hinting that he might switch to Canada to force Clarke's hand.

I don't object to him being called up and barring that I think he seemed like a nice guy, reminded me of his manager. So good luck to him whether it's with Scotland or Ireland.

"Form is basically looking at things from a results perspective" is just a very simplistic viewpoint.

Form is something intangible, a state of mind, either feeling confidence in your own ability or not, it is usually 'seen' in a player's/team's current performance. You can have the team lose but then a player being bang on form, etc etc. If each player is on good form and doing his job on the pitch then usually it would lead to a better team performance playing at their peak. Of course, luck plays a big part in sport too but there is more chance of a team winning if players are playing at their peak levels.

The discussion was about whether Scotland's winless run or Scotland's 'form' will make a jot of difference to the upcoming games in June. Team form is literally based solely on results with no other factors or context considered - That's how it's measured.

Here's a question for you. If we win against Gibraltar and Finland will we be going into the tournament with form? if so, then what difference did the last 6 months of not winning make in terms of form?

  16. 4 minutes ago, Bing.McCrosby said:

    Yes I said "more likely"

An unknowable then. It's a bogus idea. Could have a bearing, a significant bearing, hardly any bearing or no impact. Who the f**k knows. Utter shite.

That's probably why it has traction. Hard to disprove.

  17. 10 minutes ago, Bing.McCrosby said:

Your more likely to be confident and win if thats what you have been doing recently. Your more likely to play bad and lose if thats what you have been doing recently. Its very simple.

I don't think that bears out tbh. Teams that do well in preseason and do shit thereafter or vice versa. Football is littered with examples of form changing. Form is temporary, class is permanent isnt that the saying?

In other words form isn't a deciding factor. maybe contributory, but given a lot of focus - more than it deserves that's for fucking sure. Other factors are more important.

  18. Form is basically looking at things from a results perspective. No context (read excuses) applied.

If form was so important then no team would be able to turn their results around. Scotland have been on good and bad runs of form and have always managed to turn it for better or worse.

If we beat Gibraltar and Finland are we back on form? It's a daft concept IMO. We're in a tough period as fans, but it'll turn again.

Don't understand why fans and media buy into it.

No wonder you hate Rangers if that’s the period you followed Celtic

It's hard to put into words, it's just a feeling really. I grew up in a Rangers area and watched their champions league games in the 90's when in was shown on terrestrial tv.

When i came back to Scotland after 5 years away I began to develop a strong dislike for them, what they represent.

You know, it’s perfectly fine to say you’d like Celtic to win as you have a soft spot for them. I’m sure you’ve even said on here before that you supported them before?

The whole “I’m not a Celtic fan, sevco” act just seems like you’re trying to avoid being judged.

During Covid i followed Celtic because they had the most Scotland players in their team. I still listen to one of their podcasts with the Celtic by Numbers guy and Juco James.

The following year i followed Norwich City for the same reason. The year Gilmour was there on loan.

I would hope not, I know Rodgers has attempted siow controlling possessive type football this season but the amount of goals we have conceded in the latter stages of matches has been terrible considering under Ange were renowned for late winners. Its been a few times at home against teams that were out of form and relegation candidates too so we basically don't have the mentality to do it.  The **** having to go for it a bit actually  favours us as we have been shite against turgid teams.

Yeah well hopefully it goes smoothly whatever the approach. Hearts seemed a bit like a dress rehearsal looking back on it. I'm hoping Celtic win by a few tbh and preferably have it wrapped up with bow before half-time.

I need my fill of sevco seethe lol.
