  1. Can't stand fan entitlement. Fans are demanding. The customer is king. Working every hour god sends with honest intentions isn't enough.

Clubs, manager's and player's are at pains to keep them on board as you can't bite the hand that feeds, so we always hear about how great the fans are.

    Wonder what they say privately.

I'm saying none of our replacement options for right back can offer much offensively, so it becomes more important to have someone that can attack from wide right.

Ralston is quite an offensive option from wing-back. His crossing is good and for Scotland he has on a number of occasions been deployed high on the right to take advantage of that.

The back-5 is rotated, pushing one side of it higher up the pitch and dropping the other side lower. The outside centre back becomes a full-back and the wing back becomes a winger.  It's a mechanism that get's used frequently in our build-up. In our Nations League defeat to Ireland it can be clearly seen, so that's a good example of it being used.

McKenna + Robertson. Spain v Scotland.

  3. 'Form' is and always has been a load of shite IMO. It has too much traction with fans.

The Motherwell fans were banging on about Stuart Kettlewell needing to get sacked because he was a on a 15 game 'winless run'. That run lasted from 4-Sep until 30-Dec. He didn't get sacked and they're fine. It was a period where they weren't able to get the results they wanted and that's it, a difficult period but they got through and came out the other side.

It's just a difficult period for fans because we haven't had a win to cheer. Does anyone believe that this is terminal for this team and that we'll not come out the other side? That's the question really.

If we're in need of a goal against Switzerland or Hungary I could see Forrest on the right and Robertson high on the left, with Dykes and/or Shankland in the middle. We needed Kenny McLean to play that role in Oslo, coming on for Porteous, but I wouldn't want to pin my hopes on him repeating that act of genius.

Kenny McLean played from left midfield against Norway in Oslo. Aaron Hickey moved from right wing back to right full back and Stuart Armstrong played right midfield after replacing Ryan Christie.

  5. Lads, we have to consider the form argument. Simon Murray is on fire.  He knows where the goal is - concidence is sky high. Shankland is currently off form. Has looked a shadow of himself since he missed his chance v Holland.

Steve Clarke simply MUST call him up, give him a crack and let us have a wee look see.

  6. The case has been building for months. Shankland's on the slide and Murray's on the rise in terms of goal-scoring form.

I think Simon Murray deserves a crack ahead of Armstrong. He's been banging them in for County and with Fergie out the picture this is his chance I believe to come into the squad and show us all what he can do. We need goalscorers and Murray certainly is that.

    • Armstrong: 6 goals in 33.
    • Murray: 11 goals in 32.

He doesn't just do it against the duffers of the league (Dundee etc) he can do it against the big boys like we saw yesterday where showed that killer instinct that we are sorely lacking. And if that wasn't enough his link up play is fantastic, he's full of confidence - the boy is absolutely flying.

I'd start him against Germany and that's no joke - he's the in-form Scottish striker. He's scored 4 in his last 5, compared to Shankland who's only managed a poor 1 in his last 5 (a penalty).

    CASE CLOSED

Simon Murray must replace Shankland in the squad who has lost all of his form and therefore confidence. Shankland hasn't scored a goal other than the one penalty in months. Murray's the in-form Scottish striker. His link up play has been great too. We need to see what the boy can do and get a close look at him in squad.

It's a bit worrying how quickly some folk have switched to believing that we'd be as well just staying home. You get the impression they're absolutely dreading June coming around.

That's the nature of fans isn't it? No middle ground.

  8. A mythology has built up around James Forrest's injury history to the point where non Celtic fans seem to work on an assumption that if he hasn't played it's because he's injured. That's not always been the case. For a lot of this season he was available for Celtic and not selected.

Forrest was out injured at the turn of the year for 2 months or so, but before that he wasn't and wasn't getting loads of game time. The Dundee game was the 2nd time this season where he played more than 45 minutes. There is a case to recall him, but a lot of things would have to swing his way in my view.

Its the AFC Cup this weekend, featuring Central Coast Mariners (Australia) v Al Ahed (Lebanon). Noticed that there is a Scottish guy called Lee Erwin that plays for Al Ahed, ex Motherwell, Killie, Ross County, St Mirren and a few other non Scottish clubs. He's scored a few goals since leaving St Mirren.

There was an article in the Sun on him not too long ago that you might like. The kind of player folk on here and twitter would have been foaming at the mouth to get given a crack back in the bad days for Scotland. Not now though thankfully.

  10. There's a lot pessimism at the moment. I don't share it personally.

    • I thought we saw the best and maybe worst of Scotland in March.
    • On the injury front Lewis Ferguson is the only player definitely ruled out. Nathan Patterson probably also and no-one knows for certain with the rest.
    • I don't think results have matched performance over the 'winless run'.

I also think regardless of our 'form' and with all the preferred players available we'd be doing well to qualify from the group.

I hadn't noticed anything on the BBC to be fair but it's hardly surprising. It's a fairly obvious talking point.

Yeah, but if crags is saying it's a good idea then it's probably not. I rest my case.

  12. I think there are reasons to recall Forrest. His form, fitness, previous Scotland goals, ability to cover RWB, ability to 'beat a man' and him being one of Scottish footballs most decorated players aren't important imo.

I think he could function well in the existing system. Probably has a good understanding of the game when we have the ball from his time at Celtic under Rodgers - what to do, where to be, when to play forward and when not to. All that crap.

Not physical, a ball carrier. Probably closer to a replacement for Armstrong than Ferguson. It just depends what Clarke is looking for, who doesn't make the squad and the overall dynamic with rest who do.

You make it seem like Forrest is some unknown youth player with no pedigree who’s had a couple of decent games.

It’s completely the opposite. Forrest is one of the most decorated players in Scottish football history, has 38 caps, and is a proven performer at international level scoring five goals.

His versatility and experience is why he should be considered. Given the current injuries and lack of depth in the wide areas, I expect he will be in the squad. His recent return to fitness and form is just a footnote.

That's almost verbatim what Craigan and Stewart said.

It continues to happen time after time. A player has a couple of decent matches, not even a couple in Forrest's case, and there's a clamour to get him in the next Scotland squad. Forrest came on against Aberdeen in the semi final, scored a goal because of woeful defending and was the sub subbed before the end. He certainly played well against Dundee and scored a great goal. But that's it.

Agree. Flavour of the month. Was surprised to hear Craigan and Stewart strongly back the idea.

The only player that has been ruled out is Ferguson with Patterson also unlikely. The rest are just uncertain. I could see circumstances where it could happen, but a lot would need to swing Forrest's way.

A larger squad lessens the need for utility players. a bonus if already in the squad (McLean, McTominay, Tierney), but not enough on its own.

Is he the best replacement available for Ferguson or Patterson?
