Aye, doctoral theses have been written on the subject of positive and negative reinforcement on social media, and suffice it to say that the subject is not black and white. (Or in this case, green and red.) One common effect of persistent downvoting, intended or otherwise, is to shut down dissension/debate. When that happens, the technical term for it is “a c**t’s trick”.

That's interesting. I'd like to understand more about people taking downvoting as a personal attack, it seems to cause a hell of a lot of consternation before or after the old "doesn't really bother me, but this c**t's been red dotting me...." 😅

Slightly different, but related is that I've also notice the 'Karma farming' phenomenon where on twitter or reddit and probably on here something will be posted purely boost positive reputation which is also ridiculous. The whole attachment to online reputation is a phenomenon imo.

  2. Hardship brings community spirit to the surface, COVID being the recent example. Community spirit probably died to some degree with an increase in the standard of living and maybe also globalization. I don't think capitalism helps, it creates more of a competitive than cooperative community.

Solutions? just the wee, basic things. it probably comes from within - If you want to create that you can even in the current climate. I'm probably like most people in the sense that if you're not in my extended circle I'll probably not be too aware, maybe hear through the grapevine.

I mean it's quite literally classed as a super food for humans. You can say you don't like the taste of it but it is supremely fit for humans.

It makes sense really given where it comes from. It's no doubt a really efficient food source especially for those people back in the day before we were all alive. People have more choice nowadays so can turn their noses up at it.

If Gilmour is on the bench and we are going to aim to be more physical against Germany, think I would rather have Christie and McGregor playing the deeper roles and Armstrong playing further forward. This would also allow McTominay to get forward more also which we seem to get more out of McTominay when he's in one of the attacking midfield roles rather than sitting further back IMO

SD, Where are you planning to fit John McGinn into yer setup? Up front, at the back or in nets?

  5. I'm right down the middle with Black Pudding. I'll eat it if it's on a plate probably if it's part of a breakfast of some sort, but won't go out of my way to have it. Don't love or hate it really. Haven't eaten it for a few years tbh. Gone off the idea of having sausages, bacon, eggs, beans and all the rest for breakfast, seems a rank idea to me at the moment.

Prefer just cereal in the morning, sometimes a coffee or nothing is fine too.

Ross Stewart is back for Southampton in full training and Russell Martin says he is expected to be in the squad this weekend.

Too late I feel to get the nodnfor Euros squad even if he was to bag a couple goals in remaining games

    You never know.

It's hard to say where he was in terms of the Scotland setup as he got injured after he'd broken into the squad. He hadn't established himself in any real way, but had been capped and got some minutes here and there in Jun-22. He's been out for a long time. if he's 100% then it's possible, but probably unlikely given he's been injured essentially for the majority of the 2 years since.

Lowlife behaviour turning off notifications because you get upset by red dots, but still doling them out. The latter shouldn't be possible imo.

Yeah that's fair mate. If you have the notifications turned off then you can give it out, but don't have to take it basically. I'm happy with that though, everyone has to find things that work for them and I'm probably doing the rest of the forum a favour by not getting in a back and forth over red dots.

This can’t be right, ‘Manchester United Forever’ said he was going to miss the tournament.

The highs and lows of being a fan. There wasn't ever a story here, but look at the effect that's been had. Crazy.

There's a lot of this karma farming about. Put out a story, true or not just to get likes and so on. Amazed people still get taken in by it. It plays on people's emotions though so that's probably why, maybe one or two enjoy the emotional rollercoaster.

Except I didn't bring it up. It was part of a conversation.

My post isn't meant as a personal attack Go back and read through again and you'll see that you brought the red dotting aspect into it. I've got no beef with you, I just find the red dot phenomenon interesting.

As I said before, if you bring it up it's bothered you. It's basically telling everyone that it gets to you - I was the same until I turned the notifications off and now I don't notice. That's all I wanted to say.

Most people will take this line on being dotted. if it had no impact they would even mention it. That's the truth, that's the giveaway.

Bothers me not one jot, but I see you aren't averse to dishing them out yourself. Each to their own I suppose.

I merely mentioned it as part of the conversation.

Not quite sure why you are so rattled by it. I certainly am not. Just find it odd behaviour

A red dot is basically a criticism. Most people don't take criticism well even if it's constructive and often take it as a personal attack even if wasn't intended in that way. So it used to annoy me, but now I have my notifications turned off I hardly ever notice it. Probably one of the best things I did since I joined the board for me and for other users.

I can tell just from the fact that you brought it up, that one fact alone that you noticed it tells me that it bugged you.

There are a couple of newly emerged dotters. I strongly suspect they are of an orangey persuasion, as I seem to have been targeted.

Not sure that PB was that way inclined.

It always amazes me the effect red-dotting can have on people, myself included. Took me quite a while to recognise that red dots aren't that important and more popularity based or if a post gets a laugh than anything else in terms of quality of posting.

Not worth taking red dot's personally, if you feel the need to mention being red-dotted then it has too big an impact in your life imo. I just turned notifications off a while back and it just takes the who karma farming thing away.

Thought I’d warm up for Germany by reading stuff about previous Scotland Euros campaigns. Any suggestions folks? So far have identified 3 books about the Euros. Not bought any yet. The books are…

    Scotlands Swedish Adventure

    A Nation Again

Scotland At The Euros Past and Present

Anyone on here read any of these and recommend them? Am looking for a decent read rather than the usual football tabloid book fodder. Something equivalent to Archie MacP’s World Cup book (title escapes me but a good read I thought)

    cheers

I think A Nation Again has or is being released fairly soon in an audio format if that suits you better. I have the book, but never really got round to reading it to be honest.

Josh Doig played the full game for Sassuolo yesterday and got an assist but they were pumped by Fiorentina.

That's right, so he did - thanks! I was looking for him amongst the defenders.

I thought Tierney was an abductor and likely to still be ok? I wasn't aware of any issue with Robertson?

The big one is the McTominay one which looked worrying at the time but wasn't even mentioned on Match of the Day with nobody discussing it or asking Ten Haag post match. More detail on that in the coming days presumably but he'd be a massive loss to the team if ruled out obviously.

I haven't looked at the specifics of injuries like I normally do. Don't have the time plus it's just as easy to check once the season ends and save all the handwringing. I think Ferguson is the only player ruled out with Patterson unlikely to make it. The rest there's varying levels of hope at this point in time so fine with that.

  15. 10 hours ago, Skyline Drifter said:

Is he though? He plays more often than not because usually someone is out but he's pretty interchangeable with Gilmour in our first eleven for me.

I have a record of minutes played in 2023 and it agrees in general with the idea that Christie and Gilmour are interchangeable. The interchangeability wasn't related to injuries recently imo. That can come into it, but not last year. Christie, McGregor, Gilmour, McGinn and McTominay (5) were all available for selection across every game Scotland played in 2023, friendlies and competitive.

The primary factor driving selection and game time is which player best suits the challenges of each game. It's horses for courses. Simply put, Christie starts when it's going to be a graft, lots without the ball - the 'big games'. Gilmour starts if we want to try to control the game with the ball. That's my analysis.

10 hours ago, Skyline Drifter said:

I think the first eleven generally has McGregor and Gilmour at the base and McGinn and McTominay supporting the striker, whichever one it may be. Christie is sometimes preferred to Gilmour, he played the last double header because McGregor was out.

Gilmour and McGregor started 3 competitive games together in 2023. Georgia (Home and away), Cyprus [and England]. That tells it's own story. Is there anything pointing away from the idea that Gilmour replaced McGregor in March?

  16. Seeing we're nearly in May and there's only a few weeks of the season left, here are the players minutes and percentage game time since the clubs started back after the March International break. Judge for yourself who needs to do what.

I've checked and double checked, but if there are any errors then please let me know!

  17. Just a quick summary of the players that are injured from the regulars, not adding anything new - just putting them all together.

    Spoiler

    image.png.50f34cd1fc5861a250ba510c3d614959.png

    • The positive. Hanley and Gilmour returned to their club's matchday squads. Gilmour and Nisbet got game-time.
    • The unknown. Robertson's doesn't appear too bad, not as sure about McTominay or Tierney.
    • The negative. The rest we know about - either on the road to recovery after a long period out (Hickey, Jack, Brown) or recently injured and touch and go or completely ruled out (Ferguson, Armstrong, Patterson).

If sunny side up you're probably saying Ferguson and Patterson aren't making it and hopeful for the rest. That's where I am at the moment.

  18. Our squad depth's been tested several times with injuries and we've used alternative options. (Taylor, Hyam, Jack, Armstrong, Ferguson, Ralston, Souttar, McKenna, Clark, McLean, Cooper etc) They've been bedded in over a period of years.

Depends if you think the players below that will make a significant difference. Turnbull and Fraser have been in squads before reasonably recently.
