  1. I've always liked James Forrest, he's an elegant and low maintenance player. I'm not as sure as others are that he will or should be on the plane, but if he is then fair play to him and I'd be more than happy to have him there.

He was last called up for the Sep-2021 camp to face Denmark, Moldova and Austria, but pulled out with an injury before any games were played. He last played for Scotland at Euro-2020. It would really be a quirk to have a player play at two major tournaments but miss all of the games in between.

But he is still very likely to win the league by breaking ninety points and without losing an Old Firm game, with a weaker squad than Postecoglou had last season, and has a good chance of winning the Scottish Cup too. You can argue that is bare minimum territory, and it probably is for Celtic, but it's surely not sacking territory either - and the chances of them actually recruiting a better manager than Rodgers feel very low anyway.

Who is saying he'll be sacked?

Hanley's back fit. He's not played a single minute though so I think you're being over-optimstic there.

Hanley came on as a sub in Norwich City's last game.

Played 10 mins or so. Doesn't maybe change the outlook much though.

Jack came through 45 minutes in a behind closed doors match already and is in contention to play for Rangers again this season.

Gauranteed, there will be tears if Jack gets selected and I'll be here for it.

Absolutely. My back of a fag packet scale of chances of making the squad as it stands from snippets out there is:

    0% - Lewis Ferguson

    10% - Nathan Paterson & Ryan Jack

    25% - Aaron Hickey

    50% - Stuart Armstrong & Grant Hanley

I've probably factored Hickey back from about 40% since Frank;s comment.

    Yeah i see it similarly.

There's always the chance some of those players could be taken with the acceptance that they won't play in the friendlies and one or two of the group games.

I'm not sure there's such a thing as "officially ruled out". It's not like the SFA issue a list of people who won't be fit. He's had cruciate surgery which is at least 9 months on the sidelines normally. He's as officially ruled out as he ever will be before the squad is actually named.

Well it's certainly not good news and he didn't offer any hope there in comparison with say Russell Martin stressing whilst ruling Armstrong out for the rest of the domestic season that they would be doing all they could to get him fit for the Euros and he had a "good chance". However, it really is just him saying that Hickey not playing this season for Brentford is not positive news for Scotland. Which it obviously isn't as he's been out a long time. However, he was also reported to be running on grass a couple of weeks ago and Neil MacFarlane was a little more optimistic. It's not impossible that he may still make it but maybe playing three games in a fortnight may be optimistic. I suppose with the 26 man squad there's scope for possibly taking him if he may be available for the last group game / any knock out game.

It is slightly different with Armstrong though (and indeed Paterson) compared to Hickey (and also Hanley) in that he's played competitive football within the last month. He's not been out of the game for 6 months plus. If Armstrong is physically fit he's likely to remain fairly sharp. Hickey's not kicked a ball for more than 6 months. Leaving aside a handful of sub-optimal performances in Feb / March, Hanley's not really played for over a year. Though he at least is now physically fit and training with his team. It would be helpful if he gets 2 or 3 games for Norwich in the next fortnight but I can't imagine they'll change their team up for the playoffs at this stage unless forced.

If these dates are accurate, and there is some doubt over the likes of Armstrong who is surely the closest to making it of the group, then he may include them anyway, or push that date back a bit to save naming someone in a 27/28 man squad and then disappointing them if Armstrong / Hickey declare fit. Surely better to wait till the last minute, although I appreciate he's going to need to name the travel party for Gibraltar at least a week before.

That's all fair enough, don't disagree with any of it. The point I was trying to make overall is that Hickey has in my opinion gone from being considered a doubt in the same vein as say Grant Hanley to something closer to Nathan Patterson.

I think Lewis Ferguson is only player that 100% will not be there. Everyone else is on a sliding scale of doubtfulness.

    Lewis Ferguson is out.

Yeah, you're right. Ferguson, although not officially ruled out is definitely not going to be making it.

Just after the news broke, he (Clarke) gave me a call just to wish me well and speak to me. He gave me his support and said if I needed anything or needed to talk or chat the offer was there. He said he was devastated for me with such a big summer coming up. The manager said to me that if I wanted to come over to Germany and watch any of the games I was more than welcome. The SFA would sort everything out, which was a nice touch.

  8. I'd put Hickey in the same category as Patterson.

Not technically ruled out, but unlikely. No-one has been officially ruled. Based on their club manager's comments and the amateur doctors amongst us. None of Armstrong, Hickey and Patterson will play games for their clubs for the rest of the season, but they won't all necessarily miss out.

I read that the squad is expected to be named 21-May. Not sure if that's true - we've discussed all that previously. The article which I believe @JS_FFC referred to in the Who's on the plane thread is from 18-Apr.

Aye cause he was a regular starter for Scotland before he went there and we got f**k all other CB options. Plus Saudi has the money to pull in the worlds most famous players to give it some gravitas

Im not going to clog up the board any longer, but have a wee think about what you wrote there and hopefully you'll find the holes in it on your own.

  10. A while ago, but Lewis Morgan was in Clarke's first squad. As was Johnny Russell.

Ryan Gauld is anyones guess. Clarke had previously said it's a tough area of the squad to break into. Interpret that how you want. Maybe some or all are on a long list.

If any of them are too good to be ignored they'll be called up. That's the bottom line for me so comes down to not being better than what we have.

Gauld played with Robbo and Souttar so there's that avenue. Maybe Clarke thinks Gauld is a bad egg. 🙄

  11. Not our best performance and we carried some luck, but the Norway game was well managed. Steve Clarke made the point that they chose not to the chase the game after going behind and instead waiting until the last 10 minutes before opening up. It was something mentioned after the Netherlands friendly as we to opened up early and ended up getting thumped.

    Quote

That’s what we have to get better at and then we have to learn when the game starts to move away from us, stick to what we are good at, try and tiptoe your way back into the game. We didn’t do that. We made the pitch too open. We can stay 2-0 and maybe you don’t get the 2-1. But if it finishes 2-0 you can maybe say, ‘It was really good but we lost the game’. That can happen. We have to be a little bit more conscious of the fact that we stay in the game.

We spoke about it after Norway. It was a different game, but we stayed in the game. Everybody gave me a little bit of stick when I put Liam Cooper on as a substitute, but it was just so that we stayed in the game and we always had that chance going into the last 10 minutes of the game where one goal gave us a draw. We were lucky enough to get two goals and get the win. So they know how to do it, but they forgot how to do it the other night.

I've read the article you tit and it sounds like they are building a permanent statue somewhere in Ayrshire.

I'd be all for it if he won something but as he hasn't, it's all very tinpot.

"Hopeful officials are in talks to place a statue of team manager Steve Clarke in the centre of the town this summer.

Every possible site has been explored – but it is understood that the life size bronze sculpture would temporarily replace the Robert Burns statue in Castle.

Councillors and officials are in advanced talks about the statue and where it could be sited once Scotland exit the competition.

Keir Hardie Hill has also been mentioned as a possible location for the monument in honour of the former St Mirren and Chelsea defender, who was born and raised in Ayrshire."

read the editor's notes there champ.

"Earned his trust" wtf does that even mean when it comes to teams like Scotland where you don't have a plethora of quality players to choose from, you pick the players who will get you the best results. There's no room for passengers based on them being simply "trustworthy".

If I wanted players in based on form then I certianly wouldn't be picking the likes of McTominay for example who can't get a game for Man Utd. Also, i've mentioned I would rather have Ferguson in ahead of a Gilmour or McGregor for example as I think he would be better suited to this Scottish team with the way we play and could do with more of a physical presence in the middle.

I wouldn't say Clarke has had the best management career and hasn't built squads throughout his career as you claim, he's not lasted more than two years at any one club and been an assistant most of his career. He's obviously a well respected coach however and did a great job at Killie and then now us in the past couple of years.

Your essentially copying and pasteing whatever Clarke thinks and does on here which we can all do.

Im criticising as you don't have your own ideas and you can't seem to accept that just because we have a manager that we are not allowed to offer an opinion and what he does is always right, it is just absurd.

You actually believe you know better than Clarke. That's excellent. Well done.

Also, when journalists report on whatever your area of expertise is, like your profession, how accurate are they?

    Basically a middle man.

I look at a range of media to try and understand what Steve Clarke is doing with Scotland. Preferable to go straight to the horses mouth than via other sources although it's not always possible because some of the media is embargoed. It's much more possible than 20 years ago. Press Conference's, Interviews and official releases are typically available and not too hard to find either of YouTube, twitter or official channels. They take away the middle man.

I see Journalists as the last place I'll look to try and find information and I'll take it with a pinch of salt.

  15. 1 hour ago, Butters Scotch said:

I never said I thought I know better than Clarke or any other manager or telling him what to do.

You don't need to say it.

You don't like him not starting Lewis Ferguson and you think that is something he should do. You don't like him being loyal to players that have earned his trust, you think playing the players in 'form' is something he should be doing. You think you know better. Your opinion is that Clarke is making an error, a mistake.

Clarke knows what he's doing. He knows how to build a successful team. We've seen that throughout his career and we're seeing it with Scotland. He isn't just some random punter pulled in from the street to manage the team. You're critiscising me for listening to the subject matter expert, fucking hell. 🤦‍♂️

  16. 17 hours ago, Butters Scotch said:

So basically what you're saying is that you follow blindly whatever Clarke thinks then? Would you jump off a bridge if he told you too aswell?

Fans have a voice in a game and can also see things to improve the team believe it or not.

You said I was arrogant? what makes you think you know better than Steve Clarke? The guy's been working in football for many a long year and along come you to tell him what he should be doing. A guy that's worked as assistant to Mourinho, managed with success in the English Premier League, been successful at Killie and yes at Scotland.

Do you also enjoy telling firemen how to do their job or maybe you like to tell schoolteachers how to teach your kids? That's rank behaviour.
