And then, for the final game of the season, a now doubt showpiece occasion with all that that will entail, our contracted goalkeeper will find himself dumped back on to the bench in favour of someone who will be on the way back to England a few days later.

Because it takes place in May.

I'll continue to call this situation for the absolute farce it is, irrespective of our league position. That it hasn't done us any damage is far more through luck than judgement.

I highly doubt that McGlynn will drop Hogarth for the last game, and I highly doubt that Lincoln will give a shit whether Long plays in it or not. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if he gives them a half each.

We’re hardly going to be sanctioned for selecting our own goalkeeper. If the implications of non-adherence to this so-called contract are that we are no longer furnished with loan players from Lincoln City then that’s a cross we’ll have to bear

Long playing another minute of first-team football is a now a complete waste of time.

I would play Long, purely because he’s played in the last 5 games, gives us continuity when it’s needed. Had we won the league last week I’d be in complete agreement with you though.

Amazing now to think now that Tim Krul, Kasper Schmeichel and Tony Parks played in goal for us.

While we are talking about goalkeepers, I need to mention Ally Donaldson, he's not been mentioned for a long time.  My favourite back in the day.

Best goalie I've seen play for us.

Apologies, I only mentioned Falkirk as they are the big fish at the moment. I have no idea how often your loan players feature. I simply made the point that if you already have a comparatively big squad, augmenting it with loan players is clearly not as necessary as it is for a team like ourselves, who with smaller squads can in the course of the season find ourselves really stretched through players picking up injuries.

The reality is that our over reliance on loan players, who did not return to us after New Year left our squad very depleted last season and I think was a major factor in our poor finish  in comparison with previous years.

If the loan player system is to work for us, we need the benefit to the sending club to be fairly balanced with the benefit to ourselves.

Without our loaned players we wouldn't be able to fill the bench.

Fergusson wasnt very successful to begin with at Man U. There were fan protests calling for his head iirc. There’s no guarantee he’d have done well with us.
plus he called the team out on strike and then changed his mind. I was forced by my parents to miss the match and go to the Trossaughs that day with visiting relatives and I cried ( very young) when I found out I’d missed a match.

also he once told 10 year old me to f**k off.    So bugger him lol. He wasn’t a great player and a total cheat.

He wasn't the best footballer, but he was a prolific goal-scorer. In fact his 'worst' scoring performance was with us, scoring 37 times in 95 games.

That's interesting, few days after the game was told Tiger banjoed a fellow player just before they got on the bus to Hampden. Put that down to gossip but it would tie up with what you posted.

Aye, I remember that there was talk of fisticuffs between Tiger and Ferguson. I would have backed the wee man TBH!

  7. 1 hour ago, HopeStreetWalker said:

There's a bit about his time there. The relationship with Willie Cunningham and some of the players Tam Young, Alex Totten.

Good read and the bit about the managers job and Andy Gray just gets you thinking

I'm sure that wee Tiger refused to play in the LC semi final against Partick in 1971 because he'd fallen out with Ferguson, who was in the team.

It is the big what if indeed.

Falkirk were further ahead than Jim Mclean's Dundee United. Alex Ferguson was assistant manager to Willy Cunningham and there was a lot of young talent with potential on the books. Stewart Kennedy, John Kennedy, Alex Beckett* John Young* Ian Harley, Tom Mcleod, Doug Somner, Stewart Wheatley, Colin Fowler to name a few that come to mind* these 2 went on to be stalwards in Fergies St Mirren team. Ferguson had even lined up Andy Gray to sign for the club.

As you said - What if

You're thinking of Jim Fowler because Colin Fowler didn't arrive until the late 70's/early 80's. I think that Jim signed after Cunningham and Fergie had left too, although he was a great prospect. He left Falkirk when George Miller wouldn't let him sign for Dundee Utd and returned to amateur football. A real waste of talent!

Dare I mention the elephant in the room?   Yes we have Morrison tied up for the next two years, but I think it is highly likely some team or other is going to snatch him from us in the close season.  We should get a decent amount for him but I doubt we'll see Callumn in a Falkirk shirt next season.  Goals talk. So savour his next few games.  He's been brilliant for us.  Might be many years until we see his like again.

Don't blame the messenger, it's the way of the world.

As he was out of contract in the summer, other clubs were able to talk to him and possibly sign him on a pre-contract. I'm sure they're will have been clubs sniffing around but he obviously didn't commit to any of them. I can't see why another club, who had the option to sign him for nothing, would now want to pay a substantial fee for him.

It may be the case that a club who has not shown any interest so far might want to explore the possibility of signing him, particularly if he maintains his scoring rate, but I think it unlikely.

So Mackie, Tait & McGinn needing game time for a medal.

(If 10 is indeed the target?)

    I think sub appearances count?

Sorry, didn't realise that the total included sub appearances, so they will indeed be short. I'm sure that would be made up by the end of the season though.

Indeed I am. That much is fairly clear IMO.

Look, far be it for me to try and piss on every Falkirk fans cornflakes in this thread, if you want to consider winning League One at a canter as a legendary achievement for your club and in turn, your players and staff will become legends, wire in. You're much better placed than I am to make that assessment. I just thought it was a bit tinpot for a big club, a club the size of Falkirk to be saying that these players will now become legendary if they go undefeated against, part-time Montrose, Hamilton, Cove, part-time Kelty Hearts, part-time Annan & part-time Alloa in their next 6 games.

    I'll leave it there!

    Thanks for the debate.

Hamilton, Cove and QotS are full time mate.

I still don’t think a 2 year extension was required in the circumstances for Nesbitt. Clearly he has done well this season but how many times have we been stuck with players on extended deals contributing very little? I’d have given him 1 year with a 1 year option.

I have it from a very reliable source that Nesbitt was indeed offered a one year deal with an option, which he refused, but didn't want to say as I'd been drinking sherry.

    Oh John, John, John……

As @Bainsfordbairn has laid out very clearly, there are 10 players (some of whom are on the highest salaries currently) whose contracts are up or loans expiring.
So, not a lot of room for bringing in new faces?
Even with my “O level” arithmetic degree, I can work out that with at least the same budget as 2023-24 that it DOES leave “a lot of room” for playing squad expansion. And to compete for a whole season in The Championship, expansion in terms of quality at the very least will be required.

Yes, the recognised starting XI should be there next season (with just Hogarth & Yeats yet to sign) but we’ve been extremely lucky with injuries this season. The recurrence of the ACL aggravated injury to the unfortunate Tom Lang is a reminder as to just how fickle playing staff well-being can be. Again, luck was with us when Accies terminated Tait’s loan deal early and with minor adjustments, Mr McGlynn has coped seamlessly with Lang’s absence. But if this had happened in November……..

So, either our manager is firing his first volley of managing expectations at Falkirk Fans or he’s playing an elaborate game of poker with wage demands of potential signings. Either way, the statement is a bit of a downer.

    Sorry, John.

Maybe he meant in terms of numbers?

Heard a couple of weeks back that the injury could be bad. McGlynn now confirming that’s it’s a tear, in the same knees he had a serious injury with. Good luck Tam, get well and fit for new season.

Why didn’t you tell us at the time?

  15. Most teams tend to sit in against us and try to be difficult to break down. I was surprised therefore to see you set up with such a high line and shocked that you continued it throughout given that Morrison and Miller were consistently given half of the field to run in to. The scoreline could have been so much more when you consider the number of chances that tactic gave us.

  16. I think the squad's likely to be a bit bigger next year therefore I believe that McGlynn may well still be looking to add someone to challenge Nesbitt. I would imagine that Oliver's ability to cover different positions was uppermost in McGlynn's mind when the extension was offered.

Tait comes across as a decent enough individual in his interviews but you do get the feeling he has that air of cockiness about him in the fact he knows he can play, now whether he's thought Rankin is a clueless arsehole or not or just didn't fancy it at Accies we will never know but he's now working under a manager that knows how he ticks. He's been a great addition for us. Still a year left on his deal at Hibs I think so remains to be seen if he'll be back with us. FWIW some players do better at certain clubs than others, *Ken Eadie must have been one of the most prolific strikers in the lower leagues bar none in years gone by yet he couldn't kick his own arse with us. Was it the manager/ style of play? Possibly. I'll caveat that by saying your man Mumbongo still looks as pish at QoS as he did with you.

    * unless we were playing Motherwell!

Think this was mostly an exaggeration from people on here tbh.

I stand by that he just wasn’t very good but I didn’t see anything to suggest ‘issues’. I’ll still be very surprised if he makes the grade at Hibs especially since he’s out of contract if I’m correct.  He’s probably found that his level is poor full time level so I’d expect to see him bounce between the championship and league 1 going forward.

The guy is most definitely better than L1 standard. Absolutely no doubt!

Bear in mind that the track towards Grangemouth is fully functioning already. Would literally need a platform, signalling etc and that's it.

Two platforms, bridge, waiting room, shelter, car park, road, paths, toilets, ticket machine...
