Quick Question Thread

I like the idea of a friday game, stupid Strathclyde Police prohibiting it

Our match with Elgin, schedueled for Boxing day will probably be moved to one of the international weekends.

They were talking about that on the OS. Makes sense. I can see it being played on Saturday October 8th, the day after the Czech Republic away game.

Would it be a waste of my day to spend it trying to read the entirety of either the RTBC or the PTTGOYN threads?

Depends wether or not you're in work

Working - No, not as waste fo time

Off - Yes, massive waste of time

2004 SKODA Octavia 1.9 TDi PD Ambiente DSG; automatic, 180,000 Miles. 'Good service history'. Probably retired taxi but no sign of plates.

£3,000. Reasonable? Do many more miles if looked after?

I wouldn't touch it! Three grand is a fair chunk of cash for a decent diesel car, 180k is stellar miles.

Are you set on getting a Skoda? The reason I ask is if you'd consider alternatives here's just one little example of what you could get:

That has annoyed me. Usally, you can watch the Scotland game on a Saturday and you won't miss the normal football. But now, we've to sit with no football on the Saturday! Unless ofcourse your team are playing in the Challenge Cup.

I agree. It always seems to happen when we are on a good run as well. Top of the table, a shed load of goals scored and nine points from the last three games* and now a weekend off. Expect us to be shite a week Saturday.

*ScottR96 - this is not intended as a dig at Clyde for last weekends' result!wink.gif

I've actually looked at that very car you've linked, Monster. But there are better Mondeos for less, I'd say. Focuses, Mondeos & Octavia/Superbs are what I've looked at. They seem to receive a lot of acclaim.

180,000 is a lot as you say but I see the same cars (Octavias), maybe slightly more recent, say 05/06, come onto the used market with near double the miles e.g. 300,000 and still demand in excess of £2-3000. Sure there was one the other week had done... 260,000 and asked £2500.

They seem almost immortal. Although I appreciate there are Mondeos and Focuses doing similar mileage. Though not justifying the same dough.

Skoda is a great built car, and they will do 250,000 plus miles on a diesel. I'd be a bit worried about the oil consumption myself, and I'd be more inclined to go with a make at the top of my budget that had less miles, especially if you're commuting a fair distance and racking up the miles. If the car's been taxied it isn't necessarily a terrible thing - most taxis are serviced regularly (every 6k or so) and you'll get a lot of new parts on, but the flipside to that is you'd have to continue the 6k service to keep the engine running sweet.

Modern Mondeos are really quite good (I'd kill to have my ST back :( ) and I'd edge toward one of those.

That said, you could go on and opt for a Nissan Primera, Volkswagen Passat, Honda Accord......plenty of decent cars about!

I've done 750 words of my dissertation plus nearly all my research, i just need to go out for half a day to dig up some stuff, then analyse it.

It's due December the 13th, so am i doing alright, just keep doing around 1,000 a week, or do i really have to pull the finger out?

What happened to your Mondeo? I'd love to get one of those, they look like great cars!

I get use of a company car, so any car I own does maybe 3,000 miles a year, tops. It was a 2.5 V6 24 valve beast that did around 22mpg (less if you boot it, and with this car you WILL boot it, trust me) and it's a high insurance group (16 or 17 IIRC). At one point there were a couple of niggly things to put right: I can't even remember what they were now, and I couldn't be fucked so I sold it. I regret it now.

It's the only car I have ever driven that made me grin every single time I drove it. Ayrgirl hated it at first, but when her car was having some repairs she drove it to work for a couple of days and ended up loving it so now she's encouraging me to get another one, but I know it's a lot of expense for very little use and I'm not earning pipefitter money so I can't justify to my calvinist self spending the cash for a 'weekend car'.

If you have the spare cash to run a car that gets 22-24 mpg buy one. You won't regret it.

On a much smaller scale, I get the same just with my Escort, it costs me a lot more in things like tax than (say) a wee VW Polo or Fiesta, but even though its only a 1.4, I just get so much enjoyment out of driving that I think its worth the expense. Also, anyone who gets a shot of it loves it. I don't think I could cope with a Mondeo, the excitement would probably be too much.

I don't think I normally ever get more than 22-24 mpg off of any car! I am not a smooth driver, and I swear I used more fuel with my 1.0 Polo than I do with my 1.4 Escort. I drive really slow cars right on the edge (hard acceleration, sharp braking, late gear changes etc.) in order to get the most fun out of them, so I used to watch in horror as my fuel practically just drained out of my poor Polo, but I haven't ever maxed out my Escort as I have the power in it to enjoy myself without needing to go over the top. I think fuel expenditure can be a bit of a red herring, its more how you drive it.

We've talked about getting something more economical than the Kompressor but came to the compromise that the wife drives it the two miles there and back to her work during the week and I get to ream the life out of it at the weekend. I was doing nearly treble the petrol driving it to my work than what I put in the Focus.

You lie to yourself that you'll drive it economically until a clear bit of road comes up or some dafty in his 1 ltr Corsa is trying to scream away from you at the lights.

Foot down, dafty left feeling daft = Big grin that Monster talks of that looks like this >>>>>> :D

Mine was due in on Thursday 18th Dec 2008 and I started writing it at the start of December. I spent all my time collecting the data and tranferring it from written form to a spreadsheet (300 a b and c axes of clasts at each of 15 points in 6 different rivers (plus a whole load of other measurements/observations!) and analysing it. The writing didn't take all that long.

I was really pissed off that getting data emailed to you from SEPA or any other source is just as credible as what I did, but it was commented that my data set was the best in terms of quality and quantity they'd ever seen from a student.
