Who's Going To Uni?

Recommended Posts

I had a 30 credit course (1/8 of overall classification) that was made up entirely of group work. As it was group of six the work was spread but ultimate responsibility came down to myself and one of the others, because we knew what we were doing.

But still everyone pulled their weight sufficiently, but if they're doing f**k all boot them out and tell the lecturer.

Think we got some kind of A in it, but it wasn't as good a grade as I was expecting.

Was sitting professional exams today, prefer uni tbh, less ambiguity and room for interpretation in the questions.

Mate who dropped out of uni in the end got fucked over by group work. He was going back home over Easter or something, he told the group what dates he could meet, they never got back to him, met up behind his back, told the lecturer he did f**k all and he got no marks or something like that as they had done it all by then time he got back.

Yeah I've heard all the stories as well, it happens annoyingly. In the end ours came down to 2 presentations equalling 50%, peer assessment equalling 25% and a diary of our work which made up the remaining 25%. So half of it was group work.

Now I know my diary will have been mediocre, my peer assessment should have been really high (18/20 sort of mark) at least from those who did work, since we (4 out of the 8) we're regularly in uni from 10 in the morning to 7/8 at night. On several occasions I got home near enough midnight working on this. Problem was my stuff was needed, but wasn't used in the presentation (complicated, but it wasn't needed in that) so I effectively did 14,000 of reports for a folder that isn't marked. But is stipulated that it is required. Plus the fact the 4 who did nought won't have bothered reading my work.

It has effectively come down to the presentation in front of the industry professionals. Again the problem was we let the 4 who did nothing present, since they had no chance of answering the technical questions after. We figured they could memorise the stuff to talk about ok. As it was they sort of ballsed it up slightly. Ironically the one decent part of our presentation was the question answers. Typical.

Overall a really stupid method of grading, since it barely takes account of the quality and amount of work an individual puts in. Plus one of the girls got a better mark than me, just, since she did nothing so had an amazing diary full of lies. Me and the others didn't have time to do ours to a high standard cause we had so much work I do!!

Sorry rant over, needed to get that off my chest. So yeah if anyone has to do Project Evaluation at Napier in the future, give me a shout and I'll help with how to go about it.

You get some right freaks in lectures.

In one class, there's a foreign guy who comes in every single lecture, lies face down on the desk (therefore missing everything being said in the lecture) while the girl he comes with sits and massages/kisses his back and neck as well as running her hands through his hair. Bizarre behaviour.

Has anyone on here ever stayed in accomodation run by Unite? One of my flatmates in halls is considering it for next year but is a bit unsure about what they'd be like.

Never actually stayed in one but had numerous parties in one (King St, Aberdeen). Seemed pretty fit for purpose to me and far nicer than I had anyway.

I'm currently blacklisted by them due to refusing to pay the £1000 in damages they tried to charge me and my pals. Complete joke of an organisation.

The irony of being blacklisted *by* a Union mustn't be lost on you.

My friend stayed in the one behind Buchanan Bus station in Glasgow and I ended up spending pretty much every weekend there. It seemed pretty good and I never heard any complaints from him or his 2/3 flatmates that I interacted with a lot.

I think he got quite lucky with the draw, the three guys that were there for the entire time were very good and the other room had two people over the year who seemed decent too (though I didn't see them very much).

Depends on the place I imagine.

We stayed in Unite accommodation last year. The rooms were small and awkwardly set out to make the most of the space. For example the bed was elevated well off the floor which was a pain. The kitchen equipment was very basic too.

On the plus side heating was free and maintenance was generally pretty quick.

In my case I moved in with 11 friends and it was just a fantastic year with a whole floor taken up by our group. The accommodation wasn't great but with the right people it does its job.

This is probably common sense but if your friend knows anyone staying there just now he should ask them for a quick look around and how they feel about the place because our flats did not resemble the show flat.

ETA - On the deposit issue I've heard stories about fines etc. We were lucky in that everyone in our group got our full deposit back. That seems a fairly rare occurrence from what I've heard.

In my experience, I try to steer students away from Unite at all opportunities. Generally, they're overpriced, some are poor in terms of responses to things and a pain in the arse to get a hold of.

That said, they do seem to vary enormously from place to place. Some of the London ones were absolute abominations, some couldn't have been more helpful.

The total lack of consistency across them is just remarkable.

What city are you in? It may be worth considering similar companies to Unite, but not Unite if you get me.

One of my friends stayed here for 3 years and never had any complaints about it: http://glasgow.victoriahall.com/

I don't know what sort of price you're talking, I didn't bother looking. That's the extent of my knowledge of Glasgow. If by any chance we're talking about Aberdeen I might be more help.

Glasgow. It's not me who'd be staying in them so that stuff isn't really of my concern. I'll pass along all the reviews to my flatmate and let him do his own research into it. Was just checking to see if there was a general consensus on whether Unite are any good.

Cheers for all the replies guys.

Nope, spending that amount of time suggests more a very inefficient working process, a lot of time spent social networking etc. Even at 4th year it is simply not necessary to spend that much time, with the possible exception of more specialised degrees like the law trolls or medicine.

Exercise is important for breaking up work anyway, which made the former claim even more laughable.

Probably by 3/4th year uni?

I agree with vikingTON, doing outside things such as exercise is really important, it was one of the first things our Uni course coordinator said to us at the start of term.

I'd agree with the folks who say to et a job. I have one around uni and whilst the money is essential for me, I find that it gives my days structure as well as forcing me to plan my work - if I know I am working on Friday I have to do my essay on Thu, that kind of thing.

As I know I can't move study time about I actually get more study done than days where I think I have all day and end up wasting it all and doing nothing!

For each course (certainly the ones I teach) it is expected that students do at least 10 hours a week. That includes 4 hours of face-to-face teaching time, and the remainder independent studying. A lot of students just don't get that the class time is supposed to be the tip of the iceberg. To get a good grade, you need to do a lot more work and demonstrate that.
