I don't have one yet...

But my proposal (written after getting the position, because there was no set project, as such) involves software agents and argumentation, equipping the former with human-like skills in the latter.

My title still changes from week to week, currently its something along the lines of:

Two stage audiovisual speech enhancement, using audio only beamforming and visual GMM wiener filtering.

For SCM to read:

Its great. I love it! Everything is a-ok, my supervisor is great, did I mention that I love it?

For everyone else:

Words fail to convey the sheer horror, misery, and pain that this title disguises.

Not quite, although my background is electrical engineering.

MicroElectro-Mechanical Systems is my specialisation. Working on scales of 10^-6 metres to construct mechanical structures that can be integrated into electronic chips to form fully inegrated systems.

MEMS have the advantage of operating under subtly different forces than their meso equivalents. Look up Trimmer's laws of scaling and you find that forces work differently on different scales, thus at micro level electrostatic forces scale down 1:1, whereas electormagnetic forces scale by a factor of 1/1,000,000. Thus electostatic attraction is more important on the micro scale, as is fluid surface tension. Volume and gravity are also less important.

My particular field is in working on non silicon solutions to problems, since these have inherint limitations due primarily from their anisotropic etching characteristics. My own part of the project is based on a rig capable of setting up the necessary conditions for the process and monitoring it's progress, as well as improving upon some basic design considerations of the process, such as introducing Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs) and new mask designs, as well as some limited modelling using the Schwarz Christoffel transformation to map the non uniform E-fields that primarily drive the process.

It's not so out there as you think. Modern cars have dozens of MEMS sensors in them, primarily pressure sensors and accelorometers.

In actual fact, it's how you nintendo wii works.

Accelration causes the fingers to move closer togehte rof further apart, that produces a proportionate electrical signal (think of the cpaacitance between fingers). By taking the second differential of acceleration we get the displacement of the sensor, and by extension of the remote and your arm, which is translated to the screen from the wii....

Okay I sort of get that. Unfortunately not having taken AH Physics and having forgotten quite a lot of the Higher Physics syllabus this is only just creeping back into my mind.

Has anyone ever done much in the way of reflective pieces of work before?

I've got a group assignment in for this week, 5000 words between the three of us, but then for the week after I have to hand in a 1000 word individual reflective piece that centres on how we worked as a group and what went on, how we divided up the work, etc

I haven't actually even thought about it yet, but it's 10% of my grade, and it just seems odd, if anything. Has anyone done anything similar?

Think I'll actually fill out a module evaluation sheet for the first time, because there's a few things that have been pretty shambolic. The guy running the module is actually a really decent guy, and I'd like to believe that the shite stuff is out of his control...

For example, the assignment has four distinct areas, and all of the tutorials except mine and one other are split into groups of four. Because there's only three of us, we have to try and work out who's going to do this other section, whilst also doing the work on our own one.

Essentially, we're doing a third more work than the other groups, with no extra marks or anything. We'll actually probably end up with a lower grade.

It's not the actual amount of work that bothers me, I'd rather do the 5000 words on my own than any sort of group work, but it just seems like it's grossly unfair.

Yet again I've left a 1500 word essay to the last night without starting it, sometimes I have to just concede what an absolute c**t I am. :(

The essay is for Sociology, with the question being:

Examine the extent to which social divisions are socially contructed. Use either gender or ethnicity to construct and illustrate your argument.

Now, last time I went overboard and it was too long, this time it's the opposite. In the example of gender some things are constructed and some are genetic, there's your fucking answer there. It's not that the question is too difficult, it's just I can't be arsed answering the question in two lines then writing another 1480 words of wishey washey shite.

it sounds like a nightmare. for a start, what's to stop someone/the others saying in their 1000 words, "dunc did f**k all" or academic speak for the same.

the whole being a man down but having the same work is a right shitey situation. Has this been brought to the bloke running the thing's attention?

I'm not sure, but I'm going to e-mail him at some point soon just to ask him about the whole thing, because he is a decent guy who e-mails back and answers questions properly.

He's said that the reflective piece isn't there so that you can say "the other folk in my group are lazy fuckers and I did it all", but then I don't really understand it's purpose. To be honest, that wouldn't bother me at all, mainly because I went to all the classes, and did all the work. If it was just that sort of thing, I would be perfectly honest in mine and say "The other two in my group didn't attend all the classes, but I wasn't bothered because I knew that they were putting the work in, and they both told me if they weren't going to be there."

I might e-mail him now, actually. Basically, because I'm procrastinating instead of doing the actual original assignment :lol:

ffs its only 1500 words. get on your uni lib website, use your athens password (you DO have one of those surely) and use the journal database for sociology to search for "social construction" "Gender" surely. 5 minutes work, 1450 words. easy.

edit: dont forget your athens password but something like this will get you your 1450 words

obviously not going to happen in your group but I've done it before when asked to score what people did.
