Give this a read: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/10/16/john-grisham-says-sentencing-for-child-porn-offenders-is-too-harsh-they-arent-real-pedophiles/ :1eye

Incidentally, I'm something of a connoisseur of the more unpleasant side of the Internet; the nastier side of human nature is something that fascinates me a wee bit. However, in almost two decades online, I've never seen, nor found myself presented with the opportunity to see, child pornography. The excuse that this is something you can accidentally stumble upon is pathetic. Either you've looked for it, or someone's sent it to you.

I'd have to disagree there. I have accidentally stumbled across a site that offers it. My ex-husband's friend was in a band who had their own website that he managed himself. I'd looked at it a couple of times, just had the usual stuff there, profiles of each member of the band and samples of songs and so on. I'd not seen them for a couple of months so decided to go back to their site and have a look. I'd not googled the site, I just typed the url in and clicked on it in the suggestions from my internet history, only this time it was a pay-to-view site offering child porn. Convinced that my service provider was going to flag me up and that I was going to get a knock on the door any second, I called the local police station and reported it. I never heard anything more about it from official sources but it turned out that the lad who had set up the site had received an offer from someone wanting to buy it from him and never gave it another thought. At least, not until the police knocked his door to question him about it anyway. I've still no idea what happened and that was about 13 years ago now. I can honestly say I've never been more frightened at something I've seen on online, and I never actually saw anything other than the home page, which was just text, no images.

I'm sure people that produce this kind of thing are a lot better at hiding it these days and it's probably highly unlikely anyone would accidentally find it anymore. I just can't understand how anyone even dares to try.

You've not sent me a dodgy link have you?

I dont really like the darker side of things online, maybe the occasional death on film video but thats about it

Depends on your political views on whether you'd find the Washington Post dodgy :P

I don't understand people and the things they do, so I'm always interested in the kind of scumbaggery they get up to. Can't say it's terribly enjoyable, but it's a compulsion.

How bizarre. I'll get in before anyone else and assume the band wasn't Lostprophets.

I'd assume they've all moved onto darknets these days, like back in the pre-Internet days when they had their closed mailing lists and would swap...stuff...between each other.

I'm aware that the word "BEAST" is moving quickly in my direction, but I assure you all that my eyes have thankfully remained unsullied by images of child abuse. There are some good documentaries about these people around. Forewarned is forearmed, and all that.

I've seen worse in the NSFW on here from KK tbh

Surprised he's not riding high in the Thank Your w**k charts, TBH.

Edit: w**k is censored? It's not even considered a curse word in America! :P

Does anyone have a list of the words censored by P&B? Would be interesting to know if there are any more anomalies like Div's opinion of John McVeigh :P

 No, it certainly wasn't them!

I do remember there being a Twitter storm fairly recently where someone was sharing such images. I, thankfully, never saw anything then because the people I follow aren't that fucking stupid but there were others that saw it because other people were retweeting it all just to say "Oh, this is disgusting! Look at this! It's sick! Only sick people share this stuff!" with no sense of irony at all. Just fucking report it, for f**k sake! I will never understand people.

You could have got into trouble through no fault of your own Mrs M and i would imagine almost all folk with this stuff found on their computers come up with some sort of story like that to try get out of it!!

I'm sure they do! When I found that site, it was after 10pm but I phoned the police station there and then because I didn't want to leave it until the morning, although it wasn't exactly an emergency. I was absolutely certain that I was going to get a visit from the local constabulary to ask why I'd looked it up. It was terrifying! I'm sure that a lot of this stuff probably requires payment upfront before you're allowed to access it though and you can't exactly do that accidentally. I did wonder afterwards if the site had been taken down but there was no way I was going back to check. I've also wondered if the band name is one of these kind of code words that people use to search for but I don't even want to investigate that particularly.

I doubt the polis would get very far prosecuting someone for having a thumbnail or two in their browser cache. Now, a few thousands images on a computer taken into PC World, on the other hand...

You get the impression that John Grisham was influenced by a heady amount of ignorance combined with a friend who's unwilling to admit their browsing habits. To be fair to him, it must be a scunner to realise that your pal has an unhealthy interest in abusing children, but it's no excuse.

Aye, you hear people complaining about that a lot; offensive images and videos being shared by idiots by way of "complaint".

Can you imagine the seethe if the polis charged them all with distribution of obscene material involving a minor?

It's a good point; I don't think most folk would know how to report such things. I'd assume that Police Scotland have a form on their website somewhere, but I don't see one relating to specifically reporting websites. No doubt this one would see the information being passed on to the correct department; by "non-serious", I assume they mean anything not related to a crime in progress that patrol officers may be required to respond to.

Can't even imagine how many complaints they get that they can't even do anything about, other than pass the details on to the authorities in some far-away land.

Ive heard of people getting caught from using their card details on a website , i mean how stupid do you have to be?

Yeah, seems to be one of the top ways they're caught. If only they were all so dumb.

Feel for you mate. He'll be alright. :)

Hope the lad has a speedy recovery.

thanks guys, he is home now and doing fine, 2 weeks off school too so he's pretty happy.

The NHS gets knocked a lot but every one of the staff, despite being busy were first class and put him and us at ease with what was going on.

Yeah i know. I think i am like you in the sense i like to see the darker side of the internet and something about the paedo world is fascinating although absolutely sick! Enjoyed that bbd documentary to catch a paedophile when they were online posing as kids and the guys would show up to meet them armed with condoms etc and you had married professionals that had been oxford educated and the likes. Think it was made in 2008 when the internet wasn't where it was today and people still assumed anonymity! Not sure how many people think that you can get away with what you want on here but i would imagine the numbers have gone down and down, think these vigilante paedo hunters will have deterred quite a lot of potential beasts

Best wishes to him; it's absolute agony. Love the NHS

Mine was growing in the wrong place, which left me hanging around the hospital for 24 hours because the pain wasn't coming from where it should with appendicitis. Didn't help that it was Christmas Day and I'd been drinking for a few days beforehand; they thought I had alcohol poisoning and would be fine when I dried out. Eventually it burst and they had to do exploratory surgery because I was gradually filling up with poison

I've got a nice long scar along the side of my gut that's "almost as big as my cock", as a mate said at the time :P

Just goes to show that people from all backgrounds can have these urges, for whatever reason. You have to feel for any moral person who has an attraction to children, as it's not going to be a pleasant life, even if they never cause any harm. The rest need to be kept away from society, in one way or another. Not sure if ideas like this are workable or not, but NIMBY would always be a problem anyway.
