peasy23
Superb ride by Carapaz to take gold in the Olympic road race, he broke away with about 30km to go with Brandon McNulty, then broke again on his own just as the bunch were closing in on them.Adam Yates was in the bunch battling for silver and bronze, but was well beaten in the sprint. Van Aert and Pogacar got the places, with the Belgian getting silver by the width of a tyre.
buddie06smfc
Looked a brutal course with the temperature. Carapaz showing what he can do when Movistar aren’t there to sabotage his effort. Thomas continuing his current trend of crashing in each race he participates in, I guess he will be reserving his energy for the time trial on Wednesday.
kiddy
Looks like the same tech, as used in Amstel Gold, is in Tokyo? Edited July 26, 2021 by kiddy
Mr. Brightside
I think that's the first time I've ever seen Pogacar actually sprint before. Not a bad effort against WVA.

Tbf, Movistar sabotaged his efforts plenty of times when he was actually riding for them.

Yates started his sprint too far out and too early. He was done before Van Aert and Pogacar even started their sprints. Yates seems to get anxious and lose his nerve in a bunch finish. It was a bit amateurish for a seasoned pro with his experience.
kiddy
Trying to watch it on catch up. Carapaz & McNulty have attacked & just gone through a feed zone & BBC red button cuts out with 25km to go !
kiddy
Fantastic Gold for Carapaz & Ecuador. The strength of the podium just gives it the ultimate credibility.
Sarto Mutiny
Absolute scenes in the women's road race as Annemiek Van Vleuten celebrated as she crossed the line, not realising that there was a rider ahead of her - Anna Kiesenhofer had broken clear more or less at the start of the race and was away all day. Brilliant win

I know things are different at the Olympics from a pro race, IIRC there are no radios. The Dutch must have been blissfully unaware that the Austrian lass had fucked off miles up the road. The rest of the chasing pack must have kept it to themselves as they knew the Dutch riders would be favourites in a bunch sprint finish. Glorious stuff.

well fan for life
The Netherlands going through the full catalogue of making a tit of themselves. Claiming no time gaps, no communication, van der Poel not knowing a ramp had been taken away in the MTB despite everyone else seeming to be fully aware of it.

Picked his race & came out with nothing. Edited July 26, 2021 by kiddy

The real explanation is that the chasing pack, including Lizzie Deignan, had forgotten about Kiesenhofer - https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/deignan-frustrated-with-weird-agendas-in-olympic-road-race/ "Throughout the race, there was a lack of cohesion within the bunch, with much of the peloton expecting the Dutch to control the race, while the defending champions rode a confusing strategy that only appeared to make sense once it was confirmed that they thought the break of the day had been entirely caught." "Like Van Vleuten, Deignan was also unaware of Kiesenhofer’s position on the road and thought that the Dutch rider had claimed gold.... "Honestly, the best person won the bike race, Annemiek was clearly the strongest, so chapeau to her," she added, before she'd learned of the real winner."

There were a few riders ahead of him so van der Poel should have seen what was in front of him - https://www.eurosport.co.uk/mountain-bike/tokyo-2020/2021/tokyo-2020-olympics-very-heavy-fall-mathieu-van-der-poel-suffers-disaster-with-crash-on-mountain-bik_vid1510853/video.shtml. It looked like he misjudged it and went over the bars. Pidcock was right behind MvdP and was fine. Surely, there was a motorbike with a whiteboard to tell the bunch/peleton the gap to the leader. If there wasn't, the Dutch would be moaning about that too.
