Just a couple I'd like to comment on...

the "union" is very bad for scotland and always has been.

I don't know if it always has been, but it is now.

unleash the nade is bang on in his comments on this thread - and i agree that anonymity on the internet is a great thing.

Which comments? The ones where he insulted Swampy, the ones where he made contentious remarks, the ones where he claimed the contentious remarks were just a wind up, or some other ones?

france is a much better country than the uk.

In what way? I posted pictures of where I lived in Paris last year. Look at them (a couple pages back) and then try telling me that France is "better".

scotland is not very friendly.

It actually is. And one of the things that foreigners often comment on is how friendly Scotland is.

the united kingdom is a shitehole with very low standards of living if you take out the top earners.

Dammit, that last post reminded me that I forgot to comment on this. I echo what Honeyboy Edwards said, you obviously haven't seen much of the rest of the world!

Corrections and comments in red.

My turn!

the united kingdom is a shitehole with very low standards of living if you take out the top earners. CORRECT in the main

In what way? Seriously, the standards of living are really high here.

france is a much better country than the uk. CORRECT!

Again, why?

scotland is not very friendly. CORRECT in that it's not nearly as friendly as many Scottish people tell everyone it is

Weirdly enough, its almost always foreigners who say Scotland is friendly, and Scots who say it isn't.

Aside from the time they baled out the entire country after we fucked up in Darien?

You know it wasn't all our f**k up right? You are aware that the English Parliament forcibly made all English investers withdraw, the English tried to stop the preparation of shipping, and then put an embargo on us, barring any of their nearby colonies from trading. I'm not saying we got it right (we didn't), but to paint the English as some saviours who stepped in after our total f**k up (as I've heard it spun on here) is massively wide of the mark. They bailed us out, but they played a fairly large role in bankrupting us. I'm not an expert in the Darien farce, but even I know that!

Edited to add, I'm sure Exuberant will be on soon to explain the North British Unionist point of view, and emphasise that we should give thanks to our benevolent, generous, border redrawing, masters. :)

I heart England, XBL. Why you no heart England? :(

I'm disappointed, you've stopped playing the hardcore North Britishist in recent months. The Exuberant of last year would have immediately explained that I was completely wrong, and that we should be eternally grateful to our London Masters, and that we should know our place. Has Uni changed you?

You'll pretty much find tourists say that about any country they visit, "Oh, the people were sooo friendly!". Generally because most people are pretty friendly.

No point retreading old arguments. I still think secession isn't the answer when there are better models to preserve the best of local and larger decision-making. If anything it's my views towards Europe that have softened rather than Scottish Independence.

University has, however, hardened my absolute hatred of (particularly) post-Blair Labour. That, combined with a passable if populist SNP Administration at Holyrood, forces me to deal, on occasion, with least worst scenarios in very specific contexts.

Yes, I'm avoiding answering your question.

:: swoons ::

Fair enough though, people's opinions do change over time, I guess I might even have to continue easing back on my "London Knows Best" North British rhetoric then.

That's because they know that these people are just here for a look around. If they were deciding to stay then we'd hate them. <_<

The Big Lebowski comment was just disgusting, maybe not knowing what other films apart from No Country For Old Men that the Coen Brothers have done has put me in a vulnerable posiition, but there's no way it's the worst. It's fucking hilarious.

Yeah, I don't think anyone can genuinely hold that opinion, it's just controversial for the sake of it.

Except it's only a movie. I can think of much more

Controversial stuff than that! I just think that film is a sacred cow and as much as I love most of their other work, TBL is pretty naff.

You have obviously never seen Fargo...

Actually, Fargo was fairly dreadful, but the Big Lebowski was much much worse, I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a film considering the hype. It was dreadful and as far as I am concerned it had absolutely nothing going for it. I continue to be mystified by its success.
