The show is largely being saved by Jaime Lannister imo, he was involved in 3 of the best scenes last night, with Tywin, Joffrey and Cersei.

The best scenes, as far as I'm concerned, were the ones with Arya and the dog.

Couldn't disagree more. For one thing, the books and TV show are doing very different things. I've been enjoying both, but where the TV show is just telling a story, as a single narrative, the books are much more subtle and metafictional - their strength is the way they make great use of different perspective and states of knowledge and the interaction between history and narrative. Impossible to recreate that on telly, and I'd be greatly saddened if he wasn't able to see it through.

I think this is a really good point, and demonstrates why it could never really be the same. The fact that it's all third person does mean some characters suffer a bit though. I think Jon Snow is a far more interesting character in the books than in the tv show, purely because you get it all from his point of view. While people like Tyrion and Bronn who get lots of good lines tend to shine more (which is why we need more Dolorous Edd IMO).

Wonder why they changed actor for Darrio Naharris??

Excellant first episode. Really enjoyed that. Building the story nicely.

Don't know why, but the replacement - Michael (sp?) Huisman - is a decent actor who played Sonny in Treme.

(One of the most criminally ignored series of recent years, by the way)

The new Daario doesn't have half the charisma of the previous one, I hope he grows into the role.

Shae is a shite character in the adaptation and the actress who plays her is simply awful, the worst thing about the show I'd say.

That aside it was a good episode and having read the books you can see things are being set up nicely, I'm going to try my best not to be a book bore about this season but even in this episode we had a dose of pointless nudity with so much story to tell I wish they'd avoid the needless titillation.

I agree with this. That lassie that plays Shae used to be a porn star (For those who fancy a wee look)It does have a lot of pointless titty showing. Its a shame programmes go down this road. Tit is available everywhere else, why put it in shows like this? Hey ho, it could be worse I suppose.

Saw Rory McCann who plays The Hound at a GOT event in Glasgow a while back. It was a screening of the Blackwater episode at the GFT, with a Q&A with McCann afterwards. He was funny as f**k :)

...

 Dat opening line...

Spoilers and a question about Mondays episode below. Not sure if the tags are necessary anymore but better safe than sorry.

How has Janos Slynt found himself in a position of authority so soon after joining the Watch? I assumed that having had to give up all your land, titles etc that everyone joining would have to start from the bottom?

Don't think the spoiler tags are necessary. IIRC from the books, knights or Lords are generally automatically officers when joining the Night's Watch. Tywin Lannister also sends a letter to the Night's Watch suggesting that if Slynt is given command at the Wall then the Lannisters will look more favourably on their requests for new men.

Cheers for that.

I must have missed the part with Tywin unless it's from the books.

No worries.

I honestly can't remember if Tywin's letter is in the TV show or not, but it's not a massive plot point. In the very first scene of the first episode, where the rangers are killed by the white walkers, the ranger in command was a newbie who didn't know what he was doing, but had been made an officer because he was of noble birth.
