One of a few good boozers in the area. Hopefully the abomination that is Koelschip Yard closes down soon and is turned into somewhere a bit more palatable.

That's one of the worst pubs on Earth.

Another place that'll split opinion I'd imagine is Phillie's. Can't make my mind up on it myself.

All this Southside chat is v. good, should start our own thread about how we prefer it to the West End, honest.

Are these areas really that bad? Don't know much about them tbh. Seems like if they're that close to the city centre and aren't changing very quickly then they're bucking the trend for every other major country in Europe at least. Hard to imagine.

I was in Phillies on Friday and I get where you're coming from. I think I quite like it despite the whiff of pretension about it. I much prefer it to the west end and I'm really pleased I chose to buy in the south side.

Govanhill is basically a ghetto run by rogue landlords. There's no impetus for change there.

Meanwhile, Strathbungo and Shawlands are becoming gentrified pretty quickly.

Strathbungo and Shawlands are excellent. Govanhill is a hovel. Maryhill is a bit of a mixed bag and will be the next "gentrified" area in Glasgow imo.

It tends to be my go to first date venue.

I agree with you re the Soofside btw I'm in the same boat. Rented in the Merchant City for a few years and prefer the slightly more suburban feel to Shawlands.

I lived in Shawlands for four months

The third time we were burgled the thieves left empty handed as there was nothing left for them

Aye, there's been quite a lot of breakins and vandalism in Battlefield too. Still, having lived in most areas of Glasgow - southside is where it's at for me.

Seems like the rental/property business in Edinburgh and Glasgow are a lot different, Leith's basically becoming an extension of the city centre which has its good points and bad ones. Last weekend I arranged a night out on Duke Street which I never imagined I'd do. Never thought I'd recommend people buying in Lochend either. Prices around here are brutal just now, feel bad for people trying to get on the property ladder here if that's what they want. We got lucky getting a very nice place at a better than market price.

I once met former Arbroath manager Dave Baikie. He said that Jim McLean once told him that you should never sign a player who grew up north of Dundee as they are all puny shitebags with no character or hunger for success.

Hailing from a shite town south of the Tay makes you a better footballer apparently.

Jimmy Calderwood said something similar about young players from Aberdeen. That they were too soft

Currently looking for flats in Edinburgh, the prices where I’d like to be are fairly wild.

Properties around here are ridiculously priced  now imo, but having said that, there's no place in the UK I'd rather live so that comes at a cost I suppose. I know people in their early 20s earning around the living wage that have been viewing small 2 bed tenement flats in a part of Leith traditionally seemed as very notorious at close to £1k pcm rent. 1 bed tenement flats between Leith Walk and Easter Road have been getting advertised at offers over 115k and selling at close to 150.  Where have you been looking?  For a first time buyer I'd recommend Gorgie if you didn't fancy Lochend but that won't last for much longer, a lot of people are recognising that prices there are desirable.
