Crroma
One thing I've learned from this thread is that Scotland isn't that bad. Some of these places that folk are touting as hell on earth are far from it, just your usual grey looking Scottish town with some schemey bits thrown in for good measure. We are a self depreciating lot us scots
tarapoa
Saw this piece in the Scotsman https://www.scotsman.com/business/these-are-the-scottish-regions-with-the-highest-and-lowest-average-weekly-earnings-1-4877133?page=8 Interesting that Dumfries & Galloway, Borders and Angus rank so low - but all returned Tory MPs. I thought it's because they had more money than sense in these places. Edited February 22, 2019 by tarapoa

You aren't really in the proper countryside which I can understand the desire to be but you also aren't in a city. This probably applies to a lot of places but at least they are commuter towns or possibly located in a nice setting (the Black Isle etc). Just feels so pointless and that the only thing keeping people there is sheer tenacity. Keith and Forres are fairly bustling wee communities though. The A96 doesn't go through the High Streets of either of them, so if you've never stopped you'd get the impression that Keith is just a road of parked cars, a Tesco, a factory outlet (deceased) and a chip shop. Just like Forres has a football ground and a load of roundabouts. If you park up and actually wander in, you'll see they're just normal, faintly prosperous Scottish provincial towns.

Agricultural subsidies from the Tories with relatively low wages in that particular industry.
tarapoa
Finally got to see Tarbrax in the daylight last week.Bleak landscape and overshadowed by a bing heap, but seemed less unpleasant than Forth, a few miles further on.
Craig94
Had a read of this thread in full. Agree with Methil, wholeheartedly Went for the football one time. An absolute dive of an area. Don't think Coatbridge has been mentioned enough on this thread. Was going out with a girl last year from Edinburgh and we went to that pool in Coatbridge as her brother was young and it was the school holidays, Coatbridge was a shithole and the towns going between Edinburgh and Coatbridge on train seemed absolutely grim too.
