Jim McLean's Ghost
This helicopter technician guy is pretty buzzing.
EdgarusQPFC
Even if they did have such a thing, the helicopter was apparently tumbling out of control so doubt something like that would come in to play anyway.Strange that if the helicopter was dropping like a stone as Gordon Smart described that it didn't just trash the whole pub though. Agreed, I'd have to imagine the rotors would have still been providing some lift as it came down, even if only enough to slow it. Either pilot skill or a lot of luck but either way by the sounds of thing this could have been much worse.
Ludo*1
Ned Nederlander, on 30 Nov 2013 - 01:00, said:The main rotor would still be generating lift and the pilot would still have been able to use collective to get some degree of control regarding the speed of the fall but if the tail rotor was out then the crew would have had absolutely no directional control at all. Former RAF technician saying it can't be the tail rotor, saying the helicopter lost power and the pilots tried to guide it down but something about the weight of the helicopter was too much for the rotors or something?

I think he was suggesting it may have landed cleanly on the top of the pub several seconds before the roof caved in

The initial witnesses suggested that the aircraft was spinning and dropped from a reasonable height - I think if the pilot had control as that fella is suggesting then the roof of a pub aint where I would have put it down !!

He's litterally yards from the People Palace and St.Enochs car park, if he had any control he'd surely have tried for one of those?
statts1976uk
One of the options available to the pilot is to power down the engines to counter act the tail rotor torque or lack of. Double engine failure is a very uncommon happening.

IainMorton
I hate watching live coverage of things like this cos the reporter in the studio just asks about 10 eye witnesses the same questions and gets the same answers. It's obvious they aren't gonna see anything the other witnesses haven't seen.
meanmistermustard
Worth pointing out that this is the second time this has happened to the Glasgow polis - in 1990 one hit a block of granny flats in the southside. BBC Live Updates 01:47 "... In 1990, a police sergeant was killed when a Bell Jet 206 helicopter crashed in bad weather at Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire."
Shuggie_Murray7
Does the screen necessarily mean bodies? Possibly someone badly injured being pulled from the wreckage?
ballymoneyyin
is it possible they maydayed over the Glasgow Royal, fuel ditched over the St.Enoch. Then tried to land? I've heard that from an unreliable source.
Ebanda's Handyman Services
Does the screen necessarily mean bodies? Possibly someone badly injured being pulled from the wreckage? Aye. They'll cordon off the scene for the air crash investigators as a matter of standard you'd imagine. Doubt this is ending without fatality though.
robbie bobson
Will be a miracle of no one dies. Can't help but think it has run out of fuel trying to get back to SECC. A woman from Govanhill said it had been hovering over head with spotlight on railway line for quite a long time before incident.

A woman from Govanhill said it had been hovering over head with spotlight on railway line for quite a long time before incident. But if it was running out of fuel, then surely it could have glided to safety? and its not as thought Glasgow is short on open spaces it could have landed without trying to race back to the helipad
