The Arbroath Thread

If we have battled it out with Partick for the Aberdeen lad then he is obviously trying to get a left back in,  It does look like he has  prioritised attackers ahead of a left sided defender which may well back fire, window open for another 2 weeks so surely we get someone in.

Yes, he gets it now but as soon as the extent of Hamilton’s injury was known… or at the very least, when Hetherington left, it should have been right at the top of priorities.

Absolutely not excusing the situation - but the reality is a wee bit different from what's being said...

We had trialist left backs in pre season training with us and playing bounce games way back in June/ early July. We also had a left back who would've been an excellent signing training with us in July, but it didn't materialise. We've also tried to loan a left back in recent weeks and lost out at the last minute. It should've been sorted by now, but to say we've not been trying to sort it/ only recently been trying to sort it simply isn't true.

It's the same situation as last August/ September with strikers - we had loads of them playing in bounce games, training, loans we tried to get that never happened etc. It was absolutely unacceptable we basically had no proper strikers for half of last season, but it's not like it was through choice. The same way having no left back throughout pre season and into August is absolutely not a choice.

By all means, it's perfectly fair and very understandable people are pissed off with the lack of proper left back currently. I am with you, believe me. However, it's not fair to say the management haven't been trying to sort this for months - they have and they've had some bad luck but ultimately at the end of the day it's their job to put a squad together....

Spot on

But at same time can understand why people are venting

I really hope this thread and the mood in general takes a more positive spin soon - it’s been way too long like this for my liking.

Suppose we were due it after years and years of good times and enjoying basically every single Saturday

From the outside it looks bad, not everyone is aware what goes on behind closed doors so it's easy to see why the majority are frustrated with how things are,

There's been no update regarding Hamiltons injury and until the loan attempt that fell through there's been not really must said about defensive cover,

Obviously they can't come out and name targets and all that but just a wee update of some sort would be nice

Hello GIF by DJ Khaled

And us, too.

It seems that "championship-quality full back" is this season's "championship-quality striker" that several teams were pining for last year. That so many other teams are trying to fill this position (and seemingly competing for players like Partick and Arbroath) suggests there's just not enough quality readily available and the few who are can hold out for a higher wage.

100% bang on, they may have been looking for someone at left back from the minute Hammy got injured, nobody really knows, led to believe Hetherington gave his word that he was signing so maybe it wasnt then prioritised and then to miss out on the Aberdeen lad seems a bit unlucky, cant quite fathom why hes went to Partick to sit on the bench.

We really need to the the cheque book out, what’s the point of having piles of greenbacks in the bank if you get relegated at the end of the season, we need to push more of we are a hibrid club as Pink mentioned at the last meeting, wonder how much more Partick offered compared to us for that left back, by all accounts Partick are skint, Dick has got a very few games left before I start calling for his head, his Turkey may well be cooked long before Christmas.

The player on loan will get paid the same playing for Partick or ourselves as his contact is with Aberdeen. It seems both clubs agreed the deal with Aberdeen but the player went to Partick. Money wouldn't have been the decider for the player in this situation.

We also stopped playing Hetherington at left back after a couple of games as he was getting exploited there and were playing Banks or Stewart for the last few games. I don't think that would have been a factor in us not signing a left back.

Hopefully we can at the very  least get a left sided Oakley type signing in until January.

Am no sure Oakley was that great, often caught out of position, got away with lots, because of his speed, much better going forward, than defending, only thing he did at Queens Park, was sent for a hot dog by Dale Hilson, so not an Oakley type, want a proper defender, whose first instinct is to defend

I was meaning a young fullback on loan from that level as a minimum requirement to fill the gap on a temporary basis rather than the type of player.

We have the ability to buy players right?

Why are we constantly looking for free agents or loans to play LB rather than buy a player.

Hammy has never had to fight for his place so good competition is surely needed. Plus he is 31. May play for years but also possibility we may see show signs of decline.

Yeah but not everyone will be wanting to sell - that’s probably why Kieran MacDonald isn’t here

Got excited when I seen a signing announcement……..it’s for the woman’s team 😞

Can she play left back?

And on the Challenge Cup question - no thanks, would rather be pumped out by Bonnyrigg or East Kilbride and concentrate on the league.
