Mario Kart

Mario Kart is of course the greatest racing series of all time.

I pose the following Mario Kart based questions;

- What is your favourite version?

- Who is your preferred character?

- What is your favourite weapon?

- What is your favourite track?

I say;

- Mario Kart 64. Just a glorious, glorious version. My choice is massively biased by adolescent memories.

- Wario. Best balance of speed and toughness. And his mocking laughter was tremendous. And Mario was a peadophile.

- Whilst blue shells are hilarious when tactically used (the best being making a sure first place into last), red shells (or 3) are handy, lightning is funny (running folk over is quality), a star is handy, 3 green shells is where it's at. There's a special skill (that I have mastered) to hitting folk in front or behind with them. Special mention to carefully positioned bananas and fakes.

- Rainbow Road on the 64. Just spectacular. You can jump half the course (almost) and can knock folk off into space.

Mario Kart is truly fantastic. Me and my flatmates spent an unbelievably unhealthy amount of time playing Mario Karts. 32 track tournaments? You bet we did.

Mario Karts has a very socialist theme running through it. That sometimes made the game unfair for the better drivers, but by f**k did it make things exciting at times. That feeling when you're miles ahead, hoping you can go a whole lap without a blue shell being fired your way. Then you hear it being sent from one of your rivals as you approach the last few corners, that's pure drama.

I used to be properly shit at Mario Karts, in fact after playing it regularly with three friends I'd still never won a race a month later. I got ripped for this, and then one race I'm finally winning by a distance. I swear my heart was going, I could taste victory. Then I got swayed by a banana and fell off the side of a cliff on the last corner of Koopa Cape. Everyone laughed heartily, I was actually fucking fuming. Thankfully I became much, much better though. Anyway:

Favourite version - The only one I've played since I was a child is Mario Kart Wii, so it has to be that one.

Favourite character - I was a Wario man through and through. His way of speaking almost sounded Glaswegian, I swear when he won a race he went "YAAAAAAS". I sometimes thought I could here him saying "oh oh, fuckin moan then".

Favourite weapon - Golden mushroom all the way. Giant mushroom was good too, pule adrenalin when you got one of these.

Favourite track - There's so many exciting tracks, but the ones I always did well on (and therefore my favourites) were the ones with no big jumps over distractions, just races with lots of grass around for shortcuts. With Mario Raceway and Moo Moo Meadows (the latter especially) I had the technique fucking DOWN. Hang around the back, pick up something disruptive like a pow block or ideally lightening, wait until you're just about to collect another box and then drop it, before picking up a giant mushroom or a golden mushroom and zipping through the grass in to an uncatchable lead. I have to say though I loved the sheer drama of Peach Beach too.

I liked double dash on GameCube. Me and my mates used to play that for cash. 50p post, £1 a win and f**k all for 3rd. Games got quite heated. I liked that fact you had two characters in the kart and you could pick up two boxes.

I wouldnt disagree with this. Having a red shell with someone just in front of you and you wait until the finish line to use it then passing them to win the race. :)

They are advertising two packs of downloadable tracks and characters now. One is out in November, the other next year.

Im not sure I have a favourite, we tend to play the latest one. 8 is really good, looks superb and feels a little faster then 7

Yeah, spotted that looking at the mercedes download pack as well 8 courses each download. £7 or both for £11. Very tempting.

And 8 is good fun. Just wish they hadn't ruined battle mode

- What is your favourite version? - SNES

- Who is your preferred character? - Koopa Troopa

- What is your favourite weapon? Feather!

- What is your favourite track? - Ghost Valley 1

Possiby showing my age with those answers....

you old git, mario kart snes was the absolute dugs baws for years, wasnt even bettered by the 64 or the gamecube

but my favourite version has to be Mario Kart DS

Favourite character for me was always Luigi, a nice finely balanced character, no strengths but no weaknesses

Favourite weapon, bit of a hard one tbh, never liked the newer weapons like blue shells, golden mushrooms etc, i may sound a bit weird but the triple banana for me, excellent protection when in front, covers red shells and if someone is catching you, you simply drive in front of them and take them out with one skin

favourite course for me was always delfino square, i was the absolute king at this, even on the wii version whenever it came up i always horsed anyone online, had a wee thing for the course set in the shopping mall and of course bowsers castle courses have been awesome in every version they have appeared in

- What is your favourite version?

The SNES was my first console and I played Mario Kart to death. I can still remember how excited I was when I won my first race and left the game running on the screen where it showed that I had won so that I could prove to my sister that I had won a race.

It's funny because a lot of the newer versions are better games but for the sheer euphoria and nostalgia the SNES version has to be my favourite.

- Who is your preferred character?

Bowser, he's so powerful and although slow accelerating once he hits the front he's superb.

- What is your favourite weapon?

It really depends on your situation although having a shit load of red shells is obviously great. However, there's nothing quite like nailing somebody from far away with a perfect green shell shot.

- What is your favourite track?

Wario Stadium on the N64 without doubt. We had an N64 in our Common Room during 6th year at school and the vast majority of our time was spent repeatedly racing on this track. Mainly for the jump near the end and either the sheer terror of when you led going up to the jump knowing somebody in last had lightning or the excitement of being the one to wield the lightning and having to time it to perfection.

There was also a point near the start when going over a bump that you could jump a wall and skip a huge portion of the track but we discouraged each other from doing this as it did ruin the races.

Mentions must go for the various versions of Rainbow Road for how difficult they were; especially the original SNES one, and for the various Bowser's Castle tracks.

SNES

Donkey Kong jr

Banana, pure humiliation if you hit someone with it

Mario Circuit 1, always went for super fast times on this one. The first ghost house one was good when you nailed the shortcut without a feather or a mushroom and just used a normal jump.

Mario Kart 64

Toad

Red Shell

Koopa Troopa Beach

My mates and I used to have amphetamine powered winner stays on competitions that would literally last the better part of a full weekend.

You could fry an egg on the power supply by the end & quite possibly on our heids as well.

Death or glory going for the waterfall shortcut on the last lap, only to be snided out by a well timed red shell.

Serious business.

Favourite version - SNES, by a fucking mile.

Favourite character - Yoshi.

Favourite weapon - Lightning

Favourite track - The original Rainbow Road, due to its difficulty. One fu[test][/test]ck-up and your chances of winning were almost always fucked.

My favourite and most played track by a mile was Baby Park on Gamecube Double Dash. It was 8 laps of essentially just an oval track. We had 4 player mode set up and used to just play this track constantly. First to 10 wins became first to 20 then 30 etc.

Because the track is so short and simple it just becomes utter carnage throughout.

  • 7 months later...

reading this thread again, a lot of people picked the snes version which was genius for most of the part, only thing i hated was the AI was fucking terrible, every character had certain other AI characters that would finish 2nd, 3rd etc and they would simply all form a line

still gaming legend though

Version - Snes

Character - Yoshi

Weapon - Lightning (for below)

Track - Wario Stadium

I bought a JXD s7800 recently purely to play all the old versions (along with Wave Race and Pilot Wings). Best £100 I've ever spent.
