Cerberus
I can't believe that people were still flying out to Florida "oan ma holidays" a few days before this. They deserve to be bitten by one of those sharks caught up in the tornado.

Those that still wanted to go, yes they were. Those that decided to move their holidays to elsewhere in the world/change to a later date were allowed to do that as well.

Must say the standard of customer service from Virgin at what must be a mental time for them is really impressive. It's probably a good time to go to Orlando. A week after a hurricane landed there will have made it look a lot nicer.

Monaghan to me? Never mind the gerrymandered Orange statelet under the jackboot of British military occupation in all of this. We've had plenty of hurricane forced winds in Scotland over the years with the 1968 storm probably being the worst in recent times historically and we seem to manage more or less OK. Why do Americans insist on building lots of buildings in totally exposed coastal areas that are easily predicted to be a bad move from a weather standpoint with materials that are not going to withstand strong wind levels that people somewhere like Shetland have dealt with routinely for centuries? And why do people in the media insist on linking strong winds to climate change when hurricanes, typhoons and tropical cyclones are not exactly a new phenomenon?

MONKMAN
What I dont get is why with the horrific weather they have storm wise they still insist on having overhead powerlines. It costs an obscene amount of money to run power lines underground.

Timber suppliers in Scandinavia/Russia/Canada sell where they get the best prices and that's going to be in Florida and the NGO funded relief programmes in the Caribbean. Scotland needs 40,000+ new houses but at least three building projects were put on hold yesterday.
