Even More Good News on Crowds

Recommended Posts

This thread once again shows the fallacy of the 'Armageddon' claim and we should be celebrating this fact. Let's not turn it into a pissing contest between the cities of Dundee and Aberdeen.

^^^This. Fúck knows we've got our problems at Killie, and it's entirely unsurprising to see our figures. That crowds overall are doing so well is great news, and should be rammed down the throat of any fúckwit trying to push the the rangers agenda. Especially pleasing that the two Edinburgh clubs are still pulling in the punters.

From this distance, it looks like a pretty localised "Armageddon" that's occurring. An impression only reinforced by so many facets of Friday's shambles.

ETA: Also pleasing is the Green Sisters' decline. Whether they sell the STs or not, there is obviously a decrease in appetite from their fans - for whatever reason. I have certainly noticed a decline in their numbers at away matches. Like the boiling frog, with a bit of luck by the time they realise how far their support has dropped it will be too late. Another mob with a huge stadium and infrastructure to support on Domestic income - lovely.

Just you concentrate on your wee relegation battle :)

On another note, it's fucking brilliant that by and large attendances continue to improve for most other clubs, whilst the b*****d son of Rangers continues to dwindle. Especially given their hilarious prophecies of doom after re-starting at the bottom. Remember these?

"What's left of Scottish football"

"SPL in ashes"

"Five clubs in Administration within weeks"

Absolutely delightful that it's gone in almost the completely opposite direction since then.

Still, at least they can take a crumb of comfort from their unbeaten season against posties and painters the next time their club dies.

Fucking welts.

City population to attendance percentages (no consideration to any skewing as every team benefits from the skewing):

Dingwall: 63.79% (Everybody knew they'd be top due to small town population, but larger catchment area)

Motherwell: 14.90%

Glasgow: 13.20%

Dundee: 11.11%

Kilmarnock: 8.86%

Perth: 8.75%

Aberdeen: 6.17%

Hamilton: 6.13%

Edinburgh: 5.36%

Paisley: 5.44%

Inverness: 5.16%

Obviously there are factors to consider. Glasgows BBs heavily benefit from out of town/country support, I was tempted to ignore them due to this, and their shite attendance figures, but put them in for the sake of it.

To add to the debate:

Newcastle: 18.39%

Sunderland: 15.56%

Liverpool: 9.59%

London: 5.81%

Manchester: 4.7%

Is there a catchment comparison for East of Dobbies?

How as Bridget Jones Diary? Enjoy it?

I would recommend the Loose Women box set if you did.

Much more of a Sex and The City man myself.

Dundee United to Angus ratio: 7.95%.

To East Angus: 15.69%

Dundee to 50% city population: 10.12%

United to 50% population of Dundee, with EA added: 6.9%

On the rugby point... just now I'd contest Glasgow is more of a rugby city than Edinburgh and most definitely Aberdeen, in pure spectating terms.

Glasgow Warriors are averaging 6,188 this season - including some sell-outs IIRC? - whereas Edinburgh Gunners are on 5,063 but heavily lifted by their ability to stack 15k into Murrayfield, for the derby.

From personal experience I know there are 4 club rugby teams in Edinburgh who would draw 300-400-500 (Boroughmuir, Heriots, Stewart's Melville, Watsonians) but several have dropped down the levels recently; and 1 which gets a couple of hundred (Edinburgh Accies).

But Glasgow has Glasgow Hawks and several small clubs.

Aberdeen only has Aberdeen GSFP in tier 2.

Is there an easily obtainable online source for historical crowds? Be interesting to look a saints historical top flight crowds.

Crowds back to the late 1990s are available on the European Football Statistics website. For the broader sweep of history, get yourself a copy of 'The ROAR of the Crowd' by David Ross. It's a narrative history of Scottish football fans and crowds, notable events, records and so on - but also includes tables with every SFL club's average for every season, as well as an appendix giving their story of every club's record attendance.

One club city, If you ever go to Newcastle, the only football tops, kits, scarfs etc... people are wearing is Newcastle.

I would imagine Sunderland is a bit similar.

Worth mentioning a couple of notable facts, too.

Despite the demise of Rangers and the relegation of Hearts & Hibs we've still got 5 clubs averaging over 10,000... This has only been surpassed 5 times in the last 50 years (4 occasions with 6 clubs and 1 occasion with 7 clubs). Plus, Dundee United are now bearing-down on 9,000.

And since 2012-13 we've had 16 clubs averaging over 3,000. That hadn't happened since 1975.

(EDIT: Thusfar this season it's 15 but Hamilton are on 2,977 and Raith & QotS both in 2,800s).

Remarkable.

There are dozens of non league teams as well, but most do seem to be lapsed Newcastle supporters.

I've spent quite a bit of time in Northumberland. Every cuunt and their dog seems to be a Newcastle fan. Exclusivity in a 300k+ catchment area isn't to be sniffed at.
