Smurph
NASA have released the largest ever photograph. One of the most incredible things I've seen. You need to watch it until the end. Click
Venti
We are sooooo not alone in this universe. (whether or not the vast distance to travel between inhabited planets is capable is another matter) Is the music in the video Sigur Ros?

CLANCY2KTID
Yeah, to be fair the likelihood of Earth being the only planet in the universe capable of supporting life is 0. Far too many Suns with far too rocks floating around them for there not to be life elsewhere.

Addie
That's a brilliant link. It's quite unbelievable just how big the distance is between the stars when you see a picture to form those colours.
18May1991
I often wonder how God managed it. He worked all weekend. Or was it just Saturday, then a day off?

welshbairn
This is quite fun. http://janus.astro.umd.edu/cgi-bin/astro/distance.pl Travelling at just under the speed of light it would take 3 million years just to get to the centre of our own galaxy. Or around ~14 billion years to get to the edge of the observable universe travelling at the speed of light. That length of time is over 3 times the age of the Earth at a speed which would take you to the Moon in 1.5 secs. Eta: another way of looking at it is that what we're seeing is 14 billion years out of date.
