FIFA officials arrested.

Recommended Posts

No-one is going to bite the hand that feeds it and the African nations have been handed pots of money in various ways to supposedly bring football to poorer countries. Fat cat heaven for them via Mr Blatter, teflon man ;)

He's like an old fashioned mafia don. An absolute scumbag of a man and completely transparent. I wouldn't trust the guy to tell me the time without lying.

And it begins:

Federal prosecutors expect to reach a plea deal with Aaron Davidson, the highest-profile American among the 14 FIFA-related executives the Department of Justice indicted last week.
The disclosure was made in a public court filing late yesterday in which the prosecutors and defendants asked the court to halt court proceedings for Davidson until July 17.
“The parties seek exclusion of the forgoing period because they are engaged in plea negotiations, which they believe are likely to result in a disposition of this case without trial, and they require an exclusion of time in order to focus on plea negotiations,” the parties said in the court filing.
Davidson is the CEO of Traffic Sports USA, a U.S. sports marketing company accused of soliciting bribes to secure the commercial rights to international soccer tournaments.
Davidson last Friday became the first of those indicted to be arraigned, and was released on a $5 million bail. He pleaded not guilty.
Terms of that bail were also disclosed in the court filings yesterday. Davidson is confined to his home in Miami subject to electronic monitoring; he cannot speak with anyone from Traffic or other related entities like The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football; and he is barred from working for Traffic.

It would be amazing if this all results in the US losing the big tournament it's supposed to host while Russia and Qatar go on as planned.

2016 Copa America Centenario in the USA to be cancelled?

Jose Luis Meiszner, the secretary general of South American soccer’s governing body CONMEBOL, spoke to a radio station in Argentina on Monday and is pretty skeptical about next summer’s tournament going ahead.

“Today one has to question the possibility of playing this tournament,” Meiszner said. “…We have to be prepared for enormous turmoil to hold this event, given the rights holders are also being questioned.”

With the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Chile set to head to North America and take on the likes of the USA and Mexico in an expanded Copa America tournament with 10 teams from South America and six from the CONCACAF region, huge stadiums across the U.S. were expected to be packed out to witness some of soccer’s greatest stars in action.

FIFA undoubtedly has some structural issues. but any attempt of the - self appointed - "big nations" coming together to form a rival association would be a disaster.

One of the positives FIFA has done, under Blatter, has been to spread football around the world and invest in developing countries. Had it been run by the FA, for example, the World Cup would rotate around Western Europe, the US and Brazil / Argentina without ever heading anywhere else. The institution would overwhelmingly favour the most powerful nations. It would be footballs equivalent of the IMF or World Bank.

Does FIFA need to change? Absolutely. Should the self appointed "big nations" carve out an association to overwhelmingly benefit themselves? Of course not.

I'm glad Germany ruled themselves out of this pathetic boycott idea. The FA is looking increasingly like an arrogant, aloof, lone voice (with, no doubt, the other home nations foolishly clubbing along).
