Our resident fantasist who thinks that homosexuality brought on the downfall of every great civilisation has spoken online to dozens of black people; it's difficult to call which point of view should have greater merit IMO.

It just shows the lack of consistency with policing around the world.

In America they go overboard and get too excited whereas in Scotland they are too interested in bad songs and don't even answer emergency calls.

Did all our overcrowded prisons just fill themselves then?

Absolutely go, new york, boston and california are entirely different to the south, dc is pretty awesome too. California is effectively a different country, I felt very safe in LA and San Francisco, Vegas is the same the only colour they care about is the colour of your money. Dont let the bad bits put you off.

Doesn't sound very inviting.

Being a cop in certain areas of the US is a job taken on by people who are unable, for whatever reason, to get a "real" job. They are not driven by sense of civic pride or some moral code, they just want a pay cheque. They are just the front line in the defence of the rich and powerful.

I wouldn't like to go to work every day knowing I could very easily be killed. Would make me bit edgy.

If this reads like defence of their killing folk, it's not meant to.

Interesting to read that one of the shootists was killed by a bomb disposal robot who exploded a suspect device in the proximity of the assailant.

Did the cops run out of bullets?

I've never visited the U.S. and am torn two ways about going there.  There's so many incredible places I'd love to visit, not least the parts of California that John Steinbeck wrote about.  I'm sure there are many nice, warm-hearted, generous people in the States and I'm sure it would be an incredible experience, but I'm put off by the perception of religious nutters and gun freaks.

My younger son is heading out to the West Coast in about three weeks time and my elder son has been to New York and I know he'd love to go back.

I'm just a bit conflicted about visiting a place with so many social and other issues.

Went to detroit last year and it was brill. Genuinely couldn't get over how friendly absolutely everyone was. Even the homeland security guys were nice. It was disconcerting trying to reconcile that whole experience with the issues which are rightly raised in this thread. Id wholeheartedly recommend going.

Think this "robot bomb" thing will be adopted by terrorists who realise that they no longer need to do the suicide thing. Just get a remote control car, or one of these robot lawn mowers and strap the bomb belt to it.

And let the lawnmowers get all the virgins?
