But, that would surely depend on how the scenario was playing out in reality i.e. the kid pointing the gun directly at them and them being too far to get to him but near enough to offer a big enough target. As to how big a part race would play in such a scenario - we probably know the answer to that. I thought about it some more, and decided the most likely course would result in video of a 4 year-old getting hit by a taser or beanbag round from a shotgun. However, I also suspect that the cops have become so enthused to shooting people pointing guns and stuff, that their training might win and it might have resulted in a snuff flick. I one hopeful thought is the cops would pull up and see the kid repeatedly pulling the trigger and take a moment to think about that…but, as Tamir Rice proved, thinking isn’t a strong suit for far too many cops. 2 hours ago, 101 said: Throw it a soft toy or something more interesting and it would probably drop the gun 27 minutes ago, 101 said: Weans are like dugs, easily distracted The problem is training…gun waving around = instant threat to everyone around. Plus cops aren’t really trained properly in deescalation skills, despite how stupid that is, They have specialists to do that job…the job that would need to be done by the first cops on the scene, not the backups arriving 15 minutes later. However, your thought isn’t that far off, perhaps a Happy Meal for the gun scenario.
welshbairn
18th of January and the 32nd mass shooting, Go USA! Quote “These people were clearly shot in the head, and they were also shot in places that the shooter would know that quick death would occur,” Boudreaux said Tuesday. The home was known to law enforcement for illegal activity, Boudreaux said. “But let me make this very clear: Not all these people in this home are gang members. And not all these people in this home are drug dealers. The 16-year-old female is an innocent victim. The grandmother inside appears to be an innocent victim. And definitely this 10-month-old child is an innocent victim,” Boudreaux added. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/01/18/us/goshen-california-shooting-wednesday/index.html

My concern, which you have mentioned, is that the likelihood of the 2 guys arriving first being equipped to de-escalate the situation is questionable. Still, we'd all like to think the situation wouldn't have gone in the direction we fear.

I think the usual procedure here is: Child waving gun about the place Police arrive dressed like they've just fallen out of a COD MWII multiplayer map Child is white AND in a middle class suburb - DEESCALATE SITUATION Child is a minority and/or lives in poor neighbourhood - shoot the child Walk around wearing aviators looking hard as f**k Get storm of criticism in media Disciplinary action Police Union get involved and officers actually get promoted

welshbairn
I heard today that for the first time, on any random day, there's more likely to be a mass killing than not, in the USA. rowsdower
If I wasn't allergic to the shitty Memphis air, I'd probably not bother going outside anyway. In the last few months we've had a shooting rampage (where I ended up locked down in a restaurant with a magician), a kidnapping/murder, bunch of carjackings, and a few more attempted kidnappings. The crime numbers are apparently down, but it doesn't feel like it.

Not buying that because of the definitions. There is, on average, (only!) a mass shooting a month now in the U.S., when defining the mass shooting by the FBI standard (as of 2013, three or more dead in one shooting/location). As for gun violence…the U.S. had 45,222 gun deaths in 2020 (most recent data). Of those, 54% were suicide, 43% murder and 3% other (accidental, police shooting, etc). So, 43% of 45,222 is 19,445, divided by 365 is 53+ a day…easy to bet at least one involves two parties, especially as a murder-suicide would be 2 of some 110 deaths that day.
