The Youth Academy Challenge

As the off season gets under way its time to say goodbye to an old friend. Scott Currie has been at the club since the start of my career and has been the club captain for the majority of my time. Unfortunately, game time slowed up last season and he wanted to move on. Emotional stuff.

At the start of February having held onto all my players in the window, now's as good a time as any to update on our best ever season.

Scottish Championship_ Overview Profile.png

15 points clear with 12 games to go!!! Sean Rodger has been taking tips from Mark Callum and Colin Greig has turned into the Mesut Ozil of the Scottish Championship. Not only this, but we're also in the semi finals of the League cup vs St Johnstone tomorrow and still kicking about in the Scottish!

Hoping my kids can see this one out.

We've done it with 6 games to spare. What a brilliant season. What started off with a Challenge cup loss to Raith, and we've only lost 3 games since then (2 in the league, 1 in the League Cup semi). We're still in the Scottish semis with a game against Hibs to come. A full season round up to follow.

Bring on the big boys league!

ETA - My youth intake isn't worth posting. Only signed two players. Both shite.

So that's how things ended up. We lost in the Scottish cup semis to Hibs (the eventual winners, FM is weird...). But to be honest I'm not bothered because I thought I'd never mange to get up to the Premier League. Jamie Sangster and Sean Rodgers were our two rotating strikers who chipped in with 39 goals between them as we finished the highest scorers in the league, with English centre halves Nick Price and Scott Nicolson providing the solidity at the back. We're still sitting with Eddie Wylde and Chris Calder in goals, both of whom are League 2 level players so that hammers home what an achievement this is and how good my centre backs are.

Going into the new season my squad looks like this:

I had assumed that when we went up there would be investment in our shite training and youth facilities as well as our stadium. It can only fit 2500 so we need that to get bigger if we are to advance. Sadly, it was not to be, instead we spunked £2 million on undersoil heating in our dreadful stadium and now we're losing money faster than ever before paying it back with no improvements anywhere else. As you can see, we're doing well, 5th in the league. A few spawny wins and a couple of humpings (vs Celtic and Rangers so far...).

I love this game x

So I rattled through my first season in the Prem quite quickly. And we had a great one, surviving relegation easily and finishing our first season in 8th. Once again, none of our players are even at a decent Premier League level right now so pretty delighted.

Our youth intake this year was very helpful, with central midfielder Callum Black going straight into the first team. I would be very surprised if he's still with us by the time he reaches 20 as he is genuinely excellent. But the key bit here is we have a keeper with potential, something I've not had in about 9 seasons!

It comes with the territory, but we've had to lose a few players at the end of this season because they weren't playing much. All absolute stalwarts for the club, but the best of all was Jamie Macadie who was in our youth intake the first season I was in charge. In the close season we've also said goodbye to Eddie Wylde, Billy Morrison and Mark Callum. All great players for the club.

The other thing to note is that in March of that season Kansas City came in with a £500k offer for midfield starlet Robert Mclean. His release clause was activated and he was off to the MLS. This sort of thing was bound to happen sometime, I just hope we get our stadium and facilities improved a bit before it happens to more and more players.

Just discovered this, so thought I'd give it a go in Scotland on fm15.

Got Formartine Utd, and somehow absolutely flying in season one. Third at the end of November, have scored in every game, and favourable cup draws mean I've to beat elgin in a replay to get St Mirren or Dundee Utd at home in the last 16 of the Scottish cup . League cup wasn't so generous, away at hearts in round one. Lost 3-1 but a healthy boost to the bank balance.

Into the new year now, Berwick lead the way on 40 points, Stirling 35, Formartine 32, Elgin 31.

Beat elgin 4-2 aet to set up a home tie against Dundee Utd, and I've won the last two manager of the month awards.

My 2 strikers are the top 2 scorers in the league on 12 and 11.

The board still insist they can't afford new youth facilities.

Having finished a distant second, managed to get up through the playoffs beating elgin 2-0 away then 2-1 at home in the final.

From there it went to shit, won 2 of the first 3 league games, and then into my winless streak - currently 17. Cannot see where a win might come from, but somehow only 3 points adrift in 10th. Best hope is a few wins drag me up to 9th and I can stay up via playoffs.

I would try this again.  I'm thinking the brexit restrictions of non UK players may just increase the market for home grown players, as long as I can produce those type of players.  It took a few loads to find a team I wanted to go and finally got BSC Glasgow, I think it's time for a club to combat the Glasgow monopoly of Celtic/Rangers/Partick Thistle and Queen's Park......it may just take a while

Profile: As usual, started with lowest possible stats, and moved as much as I could towards the youth side of things.

fWvwO2L.jpg

Starting Squad: Not much to work with, injuries would cause a fair number of issues throughout the season.  Also most of the time I would have to relay on the grayed out payers until I got the new youth intake.

Season: Having already done a challenge in this last year I had resigned myself to the fact I was going to go into the relegation playoff's.  It was all about keeping things respectable and surely I could do that in the league cup and get a bit of money in at the same time...

qDKLTrm.jpg

6GO28RX.jpg

....or maybe not.  This set the tone for the season, losses for most of the season with the occasional win.   The playoff was with Brora Rangers, home at first then away for the final leg, tough going.

Leg 1: Tighter than I would have liked, had to work really hard to get a draw here and the injury to Tully here hurts...2nd leg is on a knife edge

Leg 2: ....

Bloody hell, nearly fell at the first hurdle here.  I have never....NEVER...been so nervous on a pk shootout on FM more than this one.  Genuine Alan Pardew fist pump when the winner went in.

Youth intake: Forgot to screenshot it but everyone got a contract....need the numbers and depth, not a single stand out player though.

Net years plans: Desperately trying to get the chairmen to invest in better youth facilities but it's not happening although we have got as much going into youth recruitment and coaching as possible, I may even try and increase our youth coaches and specialise.  The chairmen however has plans.

rKLIRZI.jpg

We currently play at Alloa's home ground so would be nice to try and get a home of our own, This may be a while though and god know how it can be financed if we need to build, current balance is around the £60,000 mark making a monthly loss of £8,000.  Maybe a dodgy named stadium sponsorship is in the pipeline.

Going to continue to see what, if anything, happens.

So after a tough first season, I go into the new season with hope and a shed load of fear.

27P1fDB.jpg

Starting Squad 2018-2019: This is the team that's going to go through the season.  Only a few players brought into the 1st team and not much rotation used, in fact I used only 18 players throughout the season so got lucky with injuries and suspensions. Lynass and McGlinchey contributed to a combined total of 27 goals which is not bad....the rest of the team contributed 10, which is not so good.  Defensively we suck, I need a decent keeper and CD but the youth intake last season was not kind.

Season Review

PFvX2rl.jpg

Ok, so as you can tell by the flat-lined graph there....I finished bottom of league 2, big shock.  However I did have a decent run in the the Irn-Bru Cup losing narrowly to East Fife in the Quater finals, I was to lose a few weeks later again to East Fife in the Scottish Cup.  The League cup was a lot more respectable despite going out in the group stages there was no 7-0 defeats.  So onto the playoff's and we see the return of the Mileson's Llama cover band....also known as Gretna 2008.

luJ59g8.jpg

Leg 1: A good away win here, would have preferred to have kept a clean sheet bit our keeper is terrible.  BTW, that's not the Craig Gordon, just a namesake....disappointingly.  Leg 2 at home with a 2 goal advantage so I go to into with a some confidence.

KaBA2g9.jpg

Leg 2: Job done.  It wasn't pretty but nothing about this challenge is.  Anyway I go forward.

9lqd03U.jpg

Youth Intake: Disappointingly I've not found a young David De Gea or a decent CB....but Paul Barr and Paul Gray look good enough to dump into the 1st squad, I'll need to go along and look at the rest and judge accordingly.  Most got signed just to boost number into the U20's which I may take control over.

Other Points: I had 4 teams coming in and offering me interviews, County, Morton and Dundee Utd in the lower half of the premiership and Ayr Utd in the Championship.  All turned down.  Also no new on stadium yet.....and it continues to block and hinder any youth improvements.

Onto season 3......

Season 1 - 2017/2018

Starting Profile - Moved as much as I could towards the youth sides of things, as you can see I've modeled my avatar on that creepy 1,000 yard stare guy in your local.

Starting Squad - Not much to go with but I have lucked in with a semi-decent DR and DC along with a competent striker.  Most will have their contract extended for another year at least just to build an experienced base to allow our youth players to play with.

Club background - Basic info.

Season Review

Scottish League Cup - a nice group with a big Premiership side at home gives a bit of a cash boost (little about that later on), 2 rather big losses agaisnt Rangers and Morton are offset by narrow 1-0 wins against Peterhead and Stranraer which gives us a decent confidence boost heading into the start of the season.

Challenge Cup - A narrow 1-0 loss to Annan in a game which truthfully we were never really in.  There's not much money in this so with the small squad I have I'm happy to not have the fixture congestion that comes with this.

Scottish Cup - This is where my best chance of getting some decent finance into the club, but need a fair bit of luck to get there.  Fraserburgh was the first hurdle in the 2nd round and a convincing, if not spectacular, 2-0 saw us into the bag for the third round.  Unfortunately that is where the story of our cup run ends after a through 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Clyde.

League 2  - The aim is too survive by any means necessary but it turns out that The Star are fairly competitive, at least enough to give us a fighting change.  We flirted with the bottom spot but going into the last day of the season we remained in 9th place with Stirling in 10th place 2 points behind (table), as luck would have the last game of the season is away to Stirling.  Game 36 was not pretty and was never going to be but we squeak out a 1-1 draw, doing enough to avoid the relegation playoff.  Stirling would then go onto lose the playoff 2-0 to Cove Rangers.

Youth Intake - This is where I channeled my inner Oprah Winfrey and he got an contract and he got a contract and everyone gets a contract.  There is not any decent stand out to be honest but enough to bolster my 1st team and have an U20's to get some playing time for the reserves.

Finances - Oh, this is where it turns nasty.  We have little to no funds, limited shirt sponsor and not a great home crowd.  We'll need a decent injection of cash from somewhere...can you sell the players kidney's on the black market???

Season 2 preview - Look to try and get into the 4th round of the Scottish cup for a decent payday, about the only way I can get some money.  in the league it's still about survival while trying to blend in our few decent youth players into the first team.

Started this last night and I'm already a seething mess. 9 games in with Cove Rangers and I've scored 3 league goals, albeit I've only conceded 4. Started off relatively well, with a win and 5 draws, but had a couple of narrow defeats recently. Incredibly annoying, as we've been the better team in virtually every game and just not scored enough goals, despite having a star man (leading League 1 player) in Mitch Megginson. My central midfield is reasonable with a bit of potential and my centre backs are theoretically quite strong, but haven't been performing very well of late. The rest of the squad is very meh. Not looking forward to this youth intake, not one bit.

Well that was fucking brutal. Sacked with two games of the season to go, a point from safety and well in the mix. The board demanded a top-half finish, and even a 3-1 victory over St. Mirren in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup didn't sway them

As can be seen below, the problem throughout the season was a complete lack of goals. Changed to a more attacking outlook after the first third of the season in the hope that my two "leading League 2" centre backs would remain steady, but after conceding just 2 goals in our first 7 games it all went a bit pear-shaped. Only had 16 signed players, 3 of which were goalkeepers, so was on a bit of a hiding to nothing from the start. My main centre mid got sent off 6 times through the season thanks to his "dives into tackles" trait, and was banned/injured for 16 league games in total. Mitch Megginson pulled the usual billy big baws routine and wanted away come January, which only served to reinforce the rock-bottom morale already endemic through the squad.

Seething.
