Quite a few of the British upper classes flirted with Nazism prior to the war, but few were as firmly behind it as Edward VIII.

Early in the war, he was punted from the British Military Mission in France amid strong suspicions he'd been handing secrets to the Nazis. He legged it to Portugal the minute they invaded France and was threatened with court martial by Churchill to return to Britain.

They stuck him where they thought he could do the least trouble, as Governor of the Bahamas, where he continued his charm offensive by referring to the local populace as revolting monkeys, blaming Communists and Jews for local labour unrest.

After the war, he basically never worked another day in his life, sponging off the civil list and supplementing that by indulging in illegal trading of currency.

In short, we should be thankful he took up with that American bint - it gave us a cracking excuse to get rid of him and dodge a bullet.

Not a huge fan of the "Windsors", but at least they did banish the would be Nazi king to the Bahamas and QEI/II's father did do the right thing during war time along with Churchill. Think we have yet to hear the full story on just how much of the British elite wanted to cut a deal with Hitler after Dunkirk.
