Why does he have matches like this, where he just capitulates? It's ridiculous.

You should't have to win 6 games in a row to save yourself from getting embarrased at this level, not when you're number 3 in the world.

agreed. one could just be happy he did.

if we analyse it, it almost as if sometimes he just relaxes going 1 set up and has to switch on again.

i'm fairly sure it doesn't happen where he LOSES the first set.

however looking comfortable again now.

Capitulate?

He's through in style after 4 sets

wellllll, i wouldn't quite say style. the first and last sets were good, the third set to start with was shockingly poor, then he woke up and the second well the italian played well in that one I suppose.

so style?...meh ok, but maybe better to say through with room to spare.

Clay isn't his surface

The Italian seems to be a bit of a clay specialist

Job done, style or not

After the first set i got the feeling the match was going to go the same was as it did against Chela. However, all credit to the Itallian who stuck in and dug deep in the second producing alot of delicate drop shops in which Murray never seemed to be able to latch on too. Long spells in the match where Murray was being outplayed from the back of the court which is worrying. All credit to him for fighting back and taking the third. Although the 4th set finished 6-4 Murray never really looked in any real danger. Starace looked puffed and seemed to be punching above his own weight. With all that said a decent player who deserved to take a set off Murray if not two. Good test for Murray in which will help him in later rounds to come.

Murry shoul be starting his match after Giles Simon, loses the 3rd set(assuming he does) against Tipsaravich, should be a good match.

are tips sunglasses strictly legal? or is it only if they fall off mid point that its a problem.

edit to add: 7-6 6-3 tips retired hurt. :D

shoddy first set, second a bit better. needs to step it up quick style I think for second week.

I'm sure Drifter will let us know about this, but I'm fairly sure that you're right with that second question. I'm sure a commentator on Sky Sports alluded to it earlier in the year.

Was quite enjoying that game until Johnny Foreigner retired. Murray is still haing random collapses during sets but he seems to be still winning. I don't know if that is down to him losing concentration or the other guys playing well or whatever. Probably a bit of both.

When he starts to play the better players he will be humped if he does that sort of thing. I get the feeling he won't though. He is getting more confdent on clay as well. You can see the difference in his play even from the start of this clay court season. He has a good chance to make the quarters of this now which he will view as a big success. It will be a good game on Sunday now, winnable as long as he doesn't keep handing games to his opponent.

BTW how many players is that now that have retired on Murray since Wimbledon last year? I reckon it's an astonishingly high number. I wonder if he is just breaking these players mentally as much as them actually having match ending injuries?

I think he's still getting used to the surface and I also reckon that the surface might be taking something out of him, so what he's doing is switching off for a wee bit of time. I can't see him doing this against bigger names, but he has been doing it against smaller names all through this latest run of clay tourneys. Then he came up against Del Potro and looked stunning.

I think it's mere energy conservation more than anything else.

Maybe subconscious then as he has to use plenty of energy up to get back into these sets that he is chucking away.

But I agree, when he is playing a higher calibre of opponent he will match them and his concentration will be better. As he said in interviews this week, it's about finding a way to win. At least he is winning, and on a surface he doesn't really trust yet.

Didn't think of that. Silly me.

The main thing is that he's improving on the surface. Certainly more than he has on any surface so far at least. He looks unbeatable at times which is amazing when you consider how he has looked before. He's a very different player now. This guy is a contender. Well, not on clay, but you know what I mean.

I think his overall game is better now though. His confidence is sky high too and he knows he can beat anyone on the day. He should be better on the clay because he does have a decent game for it. Part of his trouble was down to the fact that he didn't have the stamina to slug it out for twenty strokes a rally with these guys. But now he knows he can match any of them physically.

He's definitely a potential grand slam winner. It's not going to be on clay as long as Nadal stays healthy but he's not far away.

Maybe he will end up another Colin Montgomery though. He's unlucky he is around during the Nadal/Federer era. Those two are magnificent players.
