Andy Murray The Greatest and General Tennis Chat

Didn’t play very well but was amazing how he managed to pull himself through there at the end.

Was a pretty special moment at the end with the camera just showing him crying into a towel for a couple of minutes, really signifying the emotional release and the amount of hard work it has taken to get back to the level that he’s at.

Hard to see him winning another match after that tbh. Disappointed that Chung lost as him against Murray is match I’ve wanted to see for a while, although neither are fit so probably best to wait a while.

Not sure why he won't win his next match tbh. His next opponent also went this distance late into night. I can see him get to final, nishikori and zvera will probably beat him.

Is that due tonight? Not a good sign of he can't complete the tournament.

Not too bad if he just needs a week off after this one though.

Pulled out of his quarter.

I just don't ever see him returning to his previous level, I saw people on DLA walk better that Murray did in the last year or so before surgery, hope I'm wrong.

Not overly surprised at him pulling out after the ridiculous finish time against Copil. By the time he'll have done his recovery and media it'll have been about six by the time he got to bed and there is no way he'll have been able to recover properly to play again the next day.

Benoit Paire's Washington meltdown. Breaks 3 rackets, kicks his chair, tosses broken rackets back on court for a ballboy to pick them up, gives up. Top pro.

Not a surprise in a match between those 2, I watched him doing all that and absolutely tanking through a 2nd set only for Baghdatis to follow suit late in the 3rd to hand the match to Paire.

I watched him playing Gasquet in Paris last year, was getting absolutely rag-dolled and complaining about a sore toe, he was down a set and trailing 4-2 in the 2nd when I heard the physio saying "your only option is to quit", I stopped watching only to notice later that he'd won the 2nd set and was midway through the 3rd, he's an enigma, all the talent in the world with a huge self-destruct button hidden in his bag at all times.

Andy Murray draws Lucas Pouille in the first round of Cinci.  He could potentially meet Federer in round three.  Murray hasn't played Federer since Cinci in 2015.

:(.  He needed a good run before the Open in a couple of weeks.  Perversely, I think the best of 5 will do him good at this stage of his comeback, like if he has a dodgy set he still has time to make it up over the potential 5.

He was never really in control over 3 sets, pumped in the 1st, cruises back into contention then pumped in the 3rd.

Looked like he lacks power on his shots. I'm trying to stay positive but not so sure he will go on for much longer. Shadow of his former self

Heard on the news on the radio this morning him saying 70/80% of his training is physical at the moment, and only 20/30% on actual tennis practice.  So he probably isn't hitting many forehands on the practice court at the moment.  He said he hopes to flip those percentages round next week before the Open.

I honestly don’t think he was that bad at all. In the first set his serve was the killer. It was awful. Apart from that I thought he looked by far the better player in long rallies. The game that won the match was the 1st of the 3rd set which gave Poullie a huge mental advantage and from there onwards he played very well on serve to close it out.

I’d say that if Murray had drawn a jobber in round 1 and won he’d have beaten Poullie in the next round but ultimately rust cost him.

Interested that his 2 warm up events to the US Open have been on fast hard courts, I’d have though he’d have been better playing Toronto last week instead where conditions are way more similar to the US Open.

When recovering from his back surgery, he protected the area by not playing full power for long enough. It took him a long time to get over that.

His serve is really bad at the moment and that is giving players easy breaks.

I’d expect him to be back to a good level by the new season. The rest of the season is about getting back to a bit of form. Hopefully enter a 250 and win.

You could see yesterday that his game was way off its normal level - he left so many balls short that Pouille was having all day to put wherever he wanted. Didn't look to be any injury niggles or fitness issues, which is promising.

Would agree that playing (and hopefully winning) a 250 would be a decent place to eliminate some of the rust. Hopefully get through a few rounds at the USO as well to get back into the swing of 5-set matches.
