What’s the deal with his ranking? Is it protected?

Nope - he will fall a long way down the rankings as he will have lost virtually all his points by the time he returns.

That isn't quite true.  He has stated that he will come back in either the grass season or the North American hard court season.  As he has been injured he will get a protected ranking.  As he will be out for almost a year that will allow him 12 main draw entries to be used as a PR entry.  This does not include wild cards, they can be given by any tournament at any time. The PR ranking is calculated by taking the average of his ranking immediately after his injury.

In Murray's case he will average somewhere around 2-3.  But it will not allow him a seeding.  So for instance at Wimbledon Murray will be granted a wildcard or use his PR ranking, he will fall to around 130 in the world.  Not enough to qualify for main draw entry.  Without the wild card or PR he would have to enter qualifying.  But will get entered into the main draw.  As he isn't a seed the grass court calculations will not be in play for him.  As he had won Wimbledon two years ago, he would have got a significant boost.

So yes his world ranking will fall rapidly and in the case he doesn't return to the North American Hard court season he will not have  ranking.  But he will get a protected ranking in 12 events to allow him straight entry to the main draw although he will not be seeded in those entries.

There's a line in one of the Indiana Jones films where he says "it's not the years honey, it's the mileage." The same applies to Andy Murray imo. He's never made it look effortless like a very few can e.g. Federer. Yes, Murray has some great shots in his locker, but his success has been underpinned by sheer hard graft and chasing down the balls that other guys wouldn't get to. I really fear the way he flogged himself to end 2016 as number 1 and to win the Tour Finals has done some irreparable damage. I really and truly hope I'm wrong.

I think this is true, although it's also true for Nadal and Djokovic. It's probably why Nadal has been so injury-prone for basically the length of his career; very few have ever put as much effort into every little aspect of their game as Rafael Nadal.

If Murray could make it back for Wimbledon, that would be fantastic. I'd rather he sat it out though, if it meant he was back to a really good level for the hard court swing. At least he'll be missing all the clay stuff anyway; jumping from surface to surface never seems to have been something he's felt comfortable with, and moving to/from clay seems to have always been a big issue for him.

Actually Murray won't need a PR for Wimbledon, as entry lists are taken about six weeks before the tournament starts.  So he will still have some clay court points in his ranking so he will qualify directly without having to use a PR.

Kevin Anderson was out after hip surgery for four months last year and he was able to make a slam final last year.

Sadly Murray's career will be over in the next three to five years and then pretty soon we will be back to celebrating jobbers winning a round at Wimbledon thinking it is a success
