Yeah the croatians are a great outside bet. I think it will be a France - Belgium final. Cant wait only three weeks to go.

Only 2 things letting the croatians down is they don't have a prolific goalscorer or a too class keeper defence and midfield are pretty strong though , really hope Iceland do well to great spirit in their squad

If you break down the candidates into groups:

Favourites: France, Germany, Spain

France have the best squad they've had since they last won it, although losing Varane is a massive blow. You also have to take into account them being France and having an impressive ability to f**k things up. We'll see. Germany & Spain also have an outrageous amount of talent at their disposal, but Germany were gubbins during qualifying and it'll be interesting to see how Spain bounce back from their humiliation at the World Cup.

Other top tier nations: Italy, England, Portugal

Are England and Portugal worthy of being considered top tier nations? f**k it, may as well. If we still had a 16 team, top two go through system I reckon we'd see Portugal eliminated in the group stage here - they aren't very good. As it is they've ended up with the worst team at the tournament in their group so they've pretty much got progression guaranteed with just a draw from Austria or Iceland needed prior to the inevitable pumping of Hungary in the last game. Fully expect elimination as soon as they meet a semi-competent side in the knockout stage, but if they end up lucky enough to get a tie against fucking Wales they'll shitfest their way to the quarters.

Italy and England's squads are far weaker than the three favourites but you'd call them both solid sides who you expect to make the quarter final as a minimum requirement. When you're that standard of side, it's really not a great leap to be imagining either of them making the final courtesy of favourable quarter-final draw and one great performance in the semi. England have the bonus of a simple group too, with a third placed team as their opponents provided they don't make a mess of winning the group. If they do get as far as the semi their bottle will inevitably crash though.

Other contenders:

Austria - excellent in qualifying and should win their group here, but that'll probably give them a harder draw in the last 16 than being runners-up would. Group F winners get the runners-up of Italy/Belgium/Sweden/ROI whereas the runners-up get the runner-up of England/Russia/Slovakia/Wales. Could see Austria v Belgium or Italy being an excellent game, but they'd dispose of Russia/Slovakia/Wales comfortably. If they do defeat Belgium or Italy no one'll want to be playing them.

Belgium - easy to say they didn't live up to the hype in 2014, but regardless of their performances they had a 100% record in the group, struggled to score v the US but battered them for 120 minutes, then were edged out by Argentina in extra-time. They're clearly capable of grinding out results on that evidence, but at the same time were unconvincing in qualifying from one of the easiest groups - winning it is all well and good, but taking only one point from Wales is piss poor. Should certainly be looking for a quarter final place at least, although avoiding Austria in the last 16 will be crucial to that.

Wales - Sit down. Teams that need late goals to scrape past Andorra aren't going to challenge for tournaments.

Don't forget that the Portuguese do like to drop an absolute stinker of a result against bigger diddies than they'll play at the finals. It would be no surprise if they don't turn up against Hungary or Iceland.

Germany Dundeeing it 3-1 at home to Slovakia in this evening's friendly. Which could be written off if their qualification efforts weren't so routinely hapless as well.

France or Spain for me. Germany have been so... "meh" since the World Cup. Belgium have a good chance and England may well make their first semi-final for 20 years.

Someone mentioned Austria earlier in the thread - I don't think they'll win it, but I do fancy them to beat Portugal to the top of their group. They'll likely play Italy or Belgium in the first knockout round, though.
