Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

My enduring memory of Mallan is digs like these.

Or skip to 3:30 here from probably one of my top 5 favourite St. Mirren goals. The camera work (and shite commentary) unfortunately doesn't do it justice.

It was. Particularly annoying as we gave you a bit of a hounding that day and it was mere weeks after we rolled over and took a 5-0 pumping at Fir Park to condemn us.

Ah, yes. From memory it was 5-0 going on more as you just didn't turn up whereas we almost got away with being equally bad in Paisley due to a soft penalty.

Tbf by spring that season we were still a bit soft at times but could also be randomly unplayable with tonnes of pace and excellent experience. I believe today might be a significant anniversary...

Never ever ever put Mallan in a deep role that requires dig, tenacity or tackling.

We were 8 points adrift at the bottom of the Championship and doomed to the seaside leagues with no wins in 14 with Mallan playing that role before Jack Ross brought Stevie McGinn into that role to free Mallan up and give him the freedom to smack in belters on the weekly.

Our system sometimes seems like it has two 6s and two 10s, which from my limited pool of watching Mallan, I'd have described him as neither, probably an 8. If his main forte is shooting, I'd definitely agree it's the 10. As good as Miller was for us last season, playing in that deeper role, he very rarely found himself in a position to shoot.

Describing positions as numbers purely for @Busta Nut's benefit 😆

We'll now cross to the thread's resident Segundo Volante, @Busta Nut, for his thoughts on the above patter.

If Mark O'Hara is the archetype of a number 8 in that he's typically box to box and all action, then Mallan is definitely a 10.

Sometimes we need a good wee number 7. You know where they play.  Dougie Arnott style.

We'll never have another no.9 like Jason Dair.

Suppose he could be moulded into our new Goss, who was fucking class for us two months.

St. Johnstone.

We are now in a position to confirm the players who will be departing the club following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. It is important we place on record our thanks to them all.

Discussions are ongoing with a number of players. We will provide a further update on this in due course.

DEPARTING CLUB FOLLOWING END OF CURRENT CONTRACT

·       Cammy Ballantyne

·       Callum Booth

·       James Brown

·       Andy Considine

·       Ali Crawford

·       Tony Gallacher

·       Chris Kane

·       Jack Wills

CAMMY BALLANTYNE

Cammy came through the ranks of our youth academy and moved on to make 11 first team appearances, scoring two goals – both of which arrived in the League Cup.

The central midfielder played an important role at the end of the 2022/23 season where he made his league debut against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Across his time at the club, Cammy picked up experience during various loans at Montrose and latterly was on loan at Clyde.

We wish him every success in the game moving forward and thank him for his service.

CALLUM BOOTH

Cup double winner Callum Booth made 79 appearances in total for the club. He started 69 of those, came off the bench on 10 occasions and scored once.

A consistent performer at left full-back, Callum started – and played the full game – in both our League Cup and Scottish Cup success in 2021.

Injury hampered him pushing on further before a loan spell was organised with League Two outfit Spartans.

You can read our full interview with Callum HERE.

JAMES BROWN

James Brown was another member of our cup double-winning squad and came off the bench during our Scottish Cup final delight against Hibs.

Initially a loan signing from Millwall, he showed his versatility and would move on to sign a permanent contract.

James made 80 appearances for us in total, which included 65 starts. He scored one goal – an absolute peach against Rangers at McDiarmid Park – and was also involved in memorable European outings.

He was loaned to Raith Rovers in February and we wish him all the very best for the rest of his career. We thank him for everything he did during his time with us.

ANDY CONSIDINE

Andy Considine joined us in the summer of 2022 following a remarkable – and impressive – 18-year service with Aberdeen.

A top professional on and off the field of play, Andy did not take long to show just why he has operated in the top-flight of Scottish football for so long.

He made 71 appearances for the club in total, five of those coming from the bench and he pitched in with two goals.

We thank Andy for all of his contributions with us and wish him well for the future.

ALI CRAWFORD

Ali Crawford first arrived with us on loan from Bolton Wanderers back in 2021 before signing a permanent deal with the club.

In total, Ali made 50 appearances and found the back of the net on six occasions. A number of those goals would prove crucial, including a late winner on the road against Livingston in February 2022 and a memorable quick-fire double at Ross County after coming off the bench in December of the same year.

We wish Ali all the very best for his next steps in the game.

TONY GALLACHER

Defender Tony Gallacher put pen to paper with us in January 2022.

Towards the end of that season, Tony suffered a leg fracture in a game against Livingston and worked hard to get back to full fitness.

Tony would make a total of 37 appearances for the club, 10 of which were from the bench. The left-sided full-back netted one goal – and what an important one it was. He guided into the back of the net to clinch a dramatic 2-1 win against Hibs in April.

We would like to thank Tony for his service and wish him well with his next moves in football.

CHRIS KANE

A long-serving stalwart, Chris Kane was a member of our youth academy and quickly caught the eye with his hard-working nature and prowess in front of goal.

He progressed to become a key member of the first team – following important loan spells – and was a star of our cup double-winning campaign in 2021.

Chris made 245 appearances for us and scored 37 goals. It was important that we placed on record our thanks to him and the full article can be read HERE.

We also sat down with Chris for an extended 15-minute video interview about his time at the club. This can be viewed on Saints TV HERE

JACK WILLS

Goalkeeper Jack Wills was a familiar face at McDiarmid Park for a long time having been a product of our youth academy.

Jack regularly trained with our first team goalkeepers and was previously sent on loan to pick up experience with Edinburgh University and Brechin City.

We would like to thank Jack for his contributions and we wish him all the very best for what comes next in the game.

END OF LOAN

·       Diallang Jaiyesimi

·       Dave Richards

·       Luke Robinson

DIALLANG JAIYESIMI

Diallang Jaiyesimi, who arrived on a season-long loan last summer, returns to parent club Charlton Athletic and we thank him for his service at the club.

‘DJ’ made 17 appearances in total for us and scored one goal. That came against Celtic at the beginning of December. We thank DJ for his contributions to the club.

DAVE RICHARDS

Goalkeeper Dave Richards made the move north on a season-long loan from Crewe Alexandra to provide competition for the number one jersey.

We would like to thank Dave and we also wish him well for the remainder of his career.

LUKE ROBINSON

Luke Robinson ended up being with us for the majority of the season from Wigan Athletic – although was briefly recalled in January.

The versatile defender picked up a knee injury towards the end of the campaign and returned early but, in total, made 33 appearances for us. Before departing, he provided a message for our fans HERE.

We thank Luke for his efforts during his time with us and wish him all the best back at Wigan.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

Manager Craig Levein said: “I would like to thank every single player for their professionalism and contributions during their time at the club.

“Myself, the staff and everyone at the football club wishes them all the very best moving forward.

“We are continuing to work hard to build our squad for next season and further updates will be provided when available.”

Ross County

Ross County Football Club can give an initial squad update following the culmination of the 23/24 season.

Yan Dhanda, Jordan Tillson, Adam Mackinnon and Matthew Wright will all depart the club following the conclusion of their contracts.

Yan joined the club in 2022, making 79 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals in that time. He swiftly became a fans favourite and played a big part in keeping the club in the Premiership this season.

Don Cowie added, ‘Yan has been an integral part of our football club over the last 2 seasons. A player who the fans have really grown to love. We wish him & his family the very best in his move to Hearts & look forward to welcoming him back to the Global Energy Stadium next season.’

Jordan, joined the club in 2020, making 100 appearances for the club, scoring 1 goal in the process.

Don commented, ‘Jordan has been a tremendous servant for our football club amassing over 100 appearances. He has been a model professional & we wish him & his family the very best for the next chapter in his career.’

Matthew and Adam both came through the clubs academy system, joining the first-team squad in the 20/21 season. Matthew made 8 first-team appearances with Adam making 6 appearances.

Don added this on the departures of the pair, ‘We wish Matthew the very best in next chapter of his career. He moved over from the islands as a youngster and it has been fantastic to watch him develop as a player and as a person. The memory of him as an academy graduate scoring a last minute equaliser against Rangers will be forever remembered by the fans. Similarly to Matthew, Adam moved over from the islands as a youngster and it has been fantastic watching him develop. His recent loan spells will stand him in good stead for the future with his recent loan spell at Arbroath being a real positive move for him playing regularly in the Scottish Championship. We wish Adam all the very best in the next chapter of his career.'

In addition to this, loan signings Will Nightingale, George Wickens, Loick Ayina, Teddy Jenks, Eli King, Brandon Khela and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have all returned to their parent clubs.

Don Cowie commented on the departing loanees - ‘On behalf of the club I would like to thank all the loan players in their key contribution both on and off the park in helping the club secure premiership football next season. We wish them the very best in returning to their parent clubs.’

The club puts on record our thanks to all of the above players and wish them all the very best in their future careers.

I have some sympathy for Goss to be fair.

Under Alexander the job of the midfield was to basically to shuttle up and down the pitch while the ball was repeatedly launched over their heads. Under Hammell, it was him and Slattery being outnumbered and overrun every week in his mental wide open 4231 formation.

Under Kettlewell when he actually got some legs alongside him in Cornelius and out wide he looked a different player. Suddenly he didn’t have to run about covering half the pitch and he could basically just sit their screening the defence while pinging passes to Johnston/Furlong. You know, play to his strengths- what a concept!!

Midfield is all about balance, especially at our level where we can’t afford a ‘complete’ midfielder. They’ll all have their flaws and the key for us is basically getting the balance right between grafters and footballers.

Break out the 1,000-time greenie.

Talking in general rather than about Goss in particular, I never understood why some folk would criticise X midfielder for not passing forwards, Y for not tackling enough etc when it's probably not even in the top five things the manager wants them to do. Cliché bingo alert but midfield is all about the unit.

Let's not get all romantic here.
Goss was dugshite until he was playing for a contract/move.

It wasn't just the managers who were at fault. He did have a great cross at times though.

In other news away to Montrose on a fuckin Tuesday night.
