The English media keep using Germany as the benchmark of a 'good side': despite the fact that Germany can't defend in their full-back positions. A side like Spain on the other hand simply won't provide England with the acres of space they're imagining: they would absolutely suffocate England from the midfield out. Not sure how the halves of the draw are likely to shape up from here, but if they're in Spain's half then they're fucked.

Both teams are effective defensively and up front have at least one players who can be a game changer.

Poland are massively overrated on here. They have some very good players but they're less than the sum of their parts. As for the Swiss, they've carried virtually no attacking threat in any of their games and England beat them comfortably twice in qualifying.

Imagine Wales get Croatia and England end up with Iceland or Hungary. Sometimes life is cruel.

Hungary the most likely scenario for England, you'd imagine - they're through already, Portugal have some making up to do, they're horrific, etc etc...

England are absolute murder to watch and it's been a while since I've seen similar levels of delusion from the panel, Bilic excepted.

They're like watching West Brom or Stoke. Hopeless, really.

In Woy's defence you could say that this is a young squad overall still to reach any kind of potential which is maybe 4 years away. But keep playing like this with such uter cluelessness against competent shitfesters and it won't do the confidence or slef belief much good.

Woy's knockers will say he is a good small club / small nation manager who hasn't got the shoes for the bigger / more high pressure jobs.

Edited to add: very well done to Wales for a great performance against Russia. With a decent draw the quarter finals looks well within their grasp.

They're not. Barring any upsets, their route would be France in the QF and Germany in the SF. Unless one of those gets beat, in which it's genuine jobbers like Switzerland or North Ireland that await.

They arent on Spains side. Germany and France are the two big ones on their half.

Couldn't beat Russia or Slovakia and lucky to beat Wales but the pundits think they'll knock out better teams.

I understand what they are getting at in saying a better team will be trying to attack and they won't have everyone behind the ball, thus more space for England.

They seem to forget though, that a better team won't just allow them possession of the ball and will be testing their defence so they may not even have the opportunity to exploit that space.

The main difference I see between England and the likes of Germany, France, Italy etc is that I can see the latter teams stepping up a gear and starting to play better, I just cannot see that second gear in the English team.

One thing that everyone is forgetting is that England;s weakest position is defence, yet they've not been tested yet so people are forgetting about them. So we've established that England struggle badly to break down teams sitting deep, and as soon as they face a team that attacks them their defence will be shown up and they'll lose. They'll face France in the quarters should they get that far, France aren't great but don't see them having much problem disposing of England.

Seemed to me the closest anyone got to scoring was the shot off the line by Skrtkl. Next closest? One of the "top three defenders in the world" almost chesting it past of the "best goalkeepers in the world" for a tap in. Did the Slovak keeper have any saves other than the one that hit his shoulder from Bertrand?

On a tangent, I think in a game like this Andros Townsend would have been a good option to have off the bench. It's clear that Barkley isn't going to play a single minute of this tournament.

He should have gone as a back-up to Sterling. Sterling's been rubbish all season but if he insisted on taking him then he obviously wanted a wide attacking player who can run it people, so Townsend should have gone as a back-up. Instead he's only taken Sterling, realised he's chronic and now has no options out wide. One of the strikers shouldn't have gone to cater for this.
