HibeeJibee
Ann Budge, the Hearts owner recently elected onto the SPFL's Board, says there are too many senior clubs in Scotland. She takes senior as meaning SPFL of which there are currently 42. She is calling for the number to be reduced to about half that, which would equate to the the current Premiership and Championship. She does not say where she thinks SPFL1 & SPFL2 clubs should go, and she doesn't say that some clubs should merge which often goes hand-in-hand with the "too many clubs" argument. Quote http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36999758 Hearts owner Ann Budge believes there are twice the ideal number of senior clubs in Scotland. Budge, who recently joined the Scottish Professional Football League's board, said: "I think 42 senior clubs is too many for Scotland. "You're looking at about half that number. "We're not throwing people to the dogs and saying you don't matter. We should be saying this is what will work better for you, what fits your profile." It must be said that claims we have too many clubs, or that the Scottish League should be restricted to full-time clubs, isn't a new idea but it's always controversial. However, it is equally worth saying that SPFL1 & SPFL2 clubs have only 1 seat on the SPFL Board out of a total of 9 members - and that Premiership & Championship clubs receive 95% of SPFL revenue. Is Budge right - and if so what is the future for clubs below the Championship? Edited August 7, 2016 by HibeeJibee
Dunning1874
I've never understood this argument. How exactly would cutting down the number of clubs playing at the national level magically benefit the game as a whole, and which clubs would be helped by it?

1320Lichtie
It's a lot of utter shite. It would just mean there were less players getting games. Would also cut attendances no doubt. This isn't English cricket nobody gives a f**k about county teams.

Obviously Budge thinks the divvy up of the other 5% will help to transform Scottish football, perhaps she's just not confident that her team will finish in the top 6 this season.
HibeeJibee
In decades gone by the argument was part-time clubs had too much influence and got too much money. Neither is remotely true now though, so it's hard to tell what the motivation is.
diegomarahenry
More clubs, more people playing football, more coaches with different ideas, more chances for people to develop. Budge coming out with the "the rest of Scottish football is letting us down" patter while stuffing a team full of foreign players is reminiscent of the dark days of the SPL formation/Old Firm whining

LIVIFOREVER
She shouldn't have stepped in to save Hearts then, and there would've been one less. Fucking hypocrite

Sergeant Wilson
To answer a couple of the above. The intention would be to limit the "professional" game to the top 2 divisions. Reduce the share of revenue even further and stop any lower division reps from having influence. SPL 2 as it was previously known.
