"The UK could react to the imposition of EU ownership rules on airlines by developing ownership rules of its own, which could prevent carriers such as the Ireland-based Ryanair from flying UK domestic routes, as it does today."

And Britain could adopt rules on ownership of airports too. The Spanish, which gave generous tax breaks to its companies to acquire airports, would not be pleased. Ferrovial has major investments in several UK airports.

Retaliatory options include auctioning EU airlines' landing rights, especially at Heathrow which is full. Another option is lowering air passenger duty for UK-based airlines. Norwegian Airlines could be a major loser at Gatwick. The EU would be incredibly stupid to pick a fight with Britain over airline ownership.

Did I miss a memo?

Oh dear!
Norway, as a member of the EEA,  is in the aviation Single Market - http://ec.europa.eu/transport/modes/air_en
What a numpty!

Well if you edit your post to be about EEA rules as opposed to EU rules we can delete these posts and pretend they never happened.

What a muppet!

That post only proves that you are even more ignorant than I thought.

The EU runs the Single Market/EEA and sets the "rules" through its legislation.

Norway is a member of the EAA but, as it's not in the EU, it can't vote on Single Market legislation.

Got it now?

The only "muppet" talk is even contempleting a trade war with the EU.

Only one winner.

Not at all. I was pointing out that the UK has retaliatory options if the EU tries to force UK airlines, using ownership rules, to move operations to the EU. So it's the EU, as usual, rather than Britain that is making threats.

What a cretin!

It's not retaliation against Norway. It's retaliation against the EU and Members of the Single Market in aviation - but only if the Commission tries to use protectionist ownership laws to try to force UK airlines to move their operations to the EU.

So much for freedom of ownership and trade! The reality is the Single Market is neither open or free. It's a protectionist racket that discriminates against non-EU countries with tariffs and restrictive regulations.

But, as usual, you would probably side with the EU against British and Scottish businesses.

You mean there are negative consequences to being a non-EU country?

If only someone had warned us!
