The DUP backed Boris's rejection of May's deal which would have meant alignment with the Single Market for the whole UK, negating the need for any checks for NI, East/West or North/South. The US system is derived from imperial and in some areas is the same. Makes life more interesting. It's easy to use measurement marking as a way to erect barriers to trade. Metric is constant across borders. 2) The US system is not derived from Imperial. Imperial wasn't codified until 1824. US Customary is mainly based upon Queen Anne measures from 1707. That's why they are different! The only reason that some imperial/USC measures are now the same is because they were standardised by reference to the metric system in 1963. Distance - The US still uses two different "foot" measures. The one that isn't equal to 30.48cm is still used for land measure, as the city blocks in USA were set out using a different foot from the equivalent imperial foot. Weight - Ounces & Pounds are the same (since 1963). Stones don't exist in the US, and their hundredweights & tons are smaller than imperial Measure - Apart from the names, the measurements (fl oz, pint & gallon) are completely different. 3) Measurement of goods for trade in the UK is primarily metric.
