Aye, I can't remember where that is - I'll find it at some point I'm sure. Gordon Smith once quoted from it while he was SFA CEO !

Other great anecdote is that in the middle of May - after beating England at Wembley; with Celtic and Rangers readying themselves for their European and Cup-Winners' Cup finals; with Kilmarnock about to play their Fairs Cup SFs; after various other representative successes we'll hear in the months to come; and so on - the national team lost its traditional May friendly at home to the Soviet Union the WC Semi-Finalists and Euros runners-up. Tartan Army booed the team from the field ...

Tommy Gemmell scored a great goal in the USSR game, for them. There was a Scotland tour of Australia, Hong Kong and somewhere else that season but a lot of players were withdrawn from the original touring squad.

Ayrshire vanquished, Elgin stunning

In a season of shocks Elgin City made their own contribution with a remarkable win over Ayr United in the delayed Scottish Cup tie this evening. Almost 10,000 enthusiastic Highlanders crammed into Borough Briggs for the occasion, which was played under artificial light. Willie Grant’s late brace set-up a lucrative visit to Parkhead after Ayr’s Malone was ordered off before half-time.

Cowdenbeath fought hard but went down 2-0 at home to St Mirren in their afternoon replay. Fife also saw Alex Ferguson score the only goal at East End Park to fire Dunfermline past Kilmarnock. Disappointed Ayrshire will have no representatives in the last 16. Here is the Second Round, drawn on Monday:

Celtic v Elgin City

Partick Thistle v Dunfermline Athletic

Queen’s Park v Airdrieonians

Dundee United v Falkirk

St Mirren v Hamilton Academical

Clyde v East Fife

Hibernian v Berwick Rangers

Aberdeen v St Johnstone

Bologna comfortably defeated West Bromwich Albion in the Fairs Cup. There was a major surprise in Istanbul where Spain, the reigning European Nations Cup holders, were held 0-0 by the minnows of Turkey in their Euro qualifier.

Scottish Cup - First Round
Elgin City 2-0 Ayr United (9,579)

Scottish Cup – First Round replays

Cowdenbeath 0-2 St Mirren (2,819)

Dunfermline Athletic 1-0 Kilmarnock (19,000)

Inter-Cities Fairs Cup - Third Round, First Leg

Bologna 3-0 West Bromwich Albion (9,500)

European Championships 1968 qualifier - Group 1

Turkey 0-0 Spain (27,262)

Just something to highlight: the crowd at Elgin v Ayr was bigger than that at the European game between Bologna (Serie A runners-up) and WBA (League Cup holders). Remarkable !

I think back then and certainly earlier in the 60's a lot of Italian clubs Inter Cities Fairs or whatever it was called Cup ties had afternoon kick-offs.

Scots bairns ready for Young Enemy

All eyes are on Pittodrie, Aberdeen tomorrow where Scotland’s youngsters embark on a mission to reclaim the Victory Shield for the first time in half a decade. Their opening match in the competition against holders England has an extra element of intrigue, as the two have been drawn together in the playoff for a place at next season’s European Youth Tournament in Turkey, both ties to be played next month.

There are many attractive games in a full Scottish League program. Rangers begin attempts to recover from last weekend’s harrowing cup defeat with a difficult match at home to Hearts, while Celtic travel to a stubborn Airdrieonians. Ayr United continue to search for their first win of the league season at home to Aberdeen. In the bottom level Berwick, flush with the success of their giant-killing, travel to struggling Clydebank while league leaders Morton host improving Queen of the South.

In news, relations between the USSR and China have worsened further following demonstrations outside the Soviet embassy in Peking. Politburo officials confirmed the dispatch of additional solidarity forces to Mongolia.

Youngsters land excellent victory

Scotland’s U18s proved their worth at Pittodrie earlier by defeating their English counterparts 1-0. Pringle scored the winning goal, a penalty, which sets them off to a good start in the annual Youth Home Championships for the Victory Shield. Encouragement was deserved throughout the team for their highly creditable performance.

Rangers, sporting several changes, initially showed all the signs of that languid and brittle play which saw them plunge to ignominious defeat in Northumberland last weekend. They deservedly trailed at home to Hearts through a goal from Danny Ferguson as half-time approached. Few in Ibrox could have expected a subsequent performance which delivered five goals without reply and secured what became a resounding victory. It proved to be an important win for silverware as well as morale, as Celtic won comfortably at Broomfield Park. Rangers have accordingly at least kept pace, trailing as they do by 5pts with a game-in-hand.

Elsewhere in the division Dundee won for the first time in nine games. Falkirk whom they vanquished continue to fall towards the bottom of the table. There was no change below the Bairns as Stirling, St Mirren and Ayr extended their losing runs. Ayr showed pluck against a rampant Aberdeen.

Second Division discussion remains the question of whether anyone can catch Morton, and if not who can join them in promotion. Arbroath defended their current occupation of that place with a 2-0 win over pursuers East Fife. Third Lanark won for the first time since mid-December. In the lower reaches, where only pride has been at stake for some time, there was a promising win for East Stirlingshire even though they remain bottom. There were poor attendances at Glebe Park and Ochilview, where fewer than 250 people patronised the contests between Brechin and Albion Rovers and Stenhousemuir and Queen’s Park.

Victory Shield (at Pittodrie)

Scotland Youths 1-0 England Youths

Airdrieonians 0-3 Celtic (21,897)

Rangers 5-1 Heart of Midlothian (33,087)

St Johnstone 1-1 Motherwell (3,828)

Stirling Albion 1-3 Partick Thistle (2,809)

Celt tactics will revolutionise soccer

There is eager anticipation tonight ahead of an international challenge friendly between Celtic and Dynamo Zagreb at Parkhead. Jock Stein is set to unveil his closely-guarded formation and tactical secret which it is claimed will transform football if successful. Formidable opponents Zagreb are runners-up in both the Yugoslavian League and Cup, and are preparing for matches in the Last 16 and Quarter-Finals of the Fairs Cup and Mitropa Cup respectively having entered both continental competitions.

Wee Gers deliver the shock of ages

Berwick Rangers – who had not beaten a Scottish League side in the cup for thirteen years until this month – have pulled off the greatest giant-killing in history. They beat the mighty Rangers at a packed Shielfield Park today. It is the first time the Ibrox club have lost in the First Round for thirty years, and the first time in history the Cup-Winners’ Cup Quarter-Finalists have lost to a lower-league club in national competition. The Scotsman described it as the “most ludicrous, weirdest, most astonishing result ever returned in Scottish football”; the Herald said “never in the history of Scottish football was there a result to match this one”. Rangers fans burnt their scarves and tammies in despair and protest, others threw them from the Tweed bridges. Thousands of jubilant Berwick fans invaded the pitch on the full-time whistle. Many felt justice in the result after Rangers attempts to expel Berwick and four other clubs from the league three years ago. News of the score elicited astonishment at grounds across Britain.

Sammy-Reid.jpg

A goal from Sammy Reid on 32 minutes was the difference between the sides, with Berwick goalkeeper and player-manager Jock Wallace putting in a defiant performance. With this defeat the holders – who substituted Willie Johnston for Davie Wilson with a broken leg midway through the second half – exited the cup they have won thirty times previously, five in the last seven years.

There was also a surprise in Motherwell where Second Division East Fife won by a goal. Five-without-reply Aberdeen and Dundee United, with a brace from Finn Dossing, pulled-off impressive away wins. Caledonian of the Highland League showed pluck but went down to Hamilton. Elgin v Ayr was postponed due to a flooded pitch and will be tried again on Wednesday, as will replays required at Cowdenbeath and Dunfermline.

Scottish Cup - First Round
Berwick Rangers 1-0 Rangers (13,283)

Caledonian 1-3 Hamilton Academical (5,500)

Celtic 4-0 Arbroath (31,300)

Dundee 0-5 Aberdeen (23,000)

Elgin City P-P Ayr United

Falkirk 3-1 Alloa Athletic (5,000)

Heart of Midlothian 0-3 Dundee United (17,139)

Hibernian 2-0 Brechin City (8,184)

Kilmarnock 2-2 Dunfermline Athletic (12,847)

Morton 0-1 Clyde (14,000)

Motherwell 0-1 East Fife (5,029)

Partick Thistle 3-0 Dumbarton (7,000)

Queen’s Park 3-2 Raith Rovers (3,186)

Stirling Albion 1-2 Airdrieonians (5,417)

St Johnstone 4-0 Queen of the South (5,000)

St Mirren 1-1 Cowdenbeath (4,071)

Second Division

Albion Rovers 1-0 Third Lanark (506)

Montrose 1-1 Clydebank (474)

Rangers surely hadn't won the cup 30 times by 1967? Is that a typo or am I misunderstanding?!

Electric Dynamo surpass Celtic plan

Celtic lost at home for the first time this season, after a late goal from Zambata the Yugoslav international won their hard-fought friendly for Dynamo Zagreb. Over 46,000 intrigued spectators had journeyed to Parkhead to see Jock Stein put into action his much-anticipated and closely-guarded tactical innovations. Branded the ‘S plan’ in some quarters, the formation appears a departure from the ‘W-M’, and adhered to a 3-4-3 style with defined defensive, midfield and attacking responsibilities.

While the tactics worked, the performance did not, and the league leaders let numerous chances go in both halves. Whistles from the crowd greeted several spurned opportunities and a traditional formation was adopted for the last 20 minutes, albeit without success. Dynamo, who eliminated Dunfermline Athletic from the Fairs Cup on away goals in November, were content with their limited opportunities before finally scoring on the counter-attack around 88 minutes, capitalising on sticky conditions underfoot.

No luck for Arabs in Italian defeat

Dundee United were well-beaten in Turin last night as Juventus scored three goals without reply to take a commanding lead of this Fairs Cup tie. Cinesinho opened the scoring after around 30 minutes and the visitors hopes were dashed by two goals in three minutes, from Menichelli and Cinesinho again, midway through the second half.

Rangers closed the gap atop the First Division to 3pts with a convincing 5-1 victory at Shawfield. They have responded resoundingly to their shock defeat at Berwick, but the subsequent thrashings of Hearts and Clyde only reemphasise the catastrophic nature of that result. Henderson, Willoughby’s brace, Stewart and Wilson scored for Rangers; Hastings for Clyde.

Leeds won 2-0 in Valencia to progress to the Quarter-Finals by a score of 3-1 on aggregate. Burnley progressed courtesy a 0-0 draw in Napoli. South Shields won their friendly against Berwick Rangers by the only goal of the game.
