Not sure what the point was for tossing the young lad to the wolves late though. Newman turned round to us in the stand and couldn't believe he was being hooked, was a strange one alright.

TheScarf
Yeah, it’s standard practice in friendlies to make 56 subs, including the keeper.

He will make a few big mistakes but he wouldn’t be dropping down to the championship if he cut those out. Cheers for all the above posts. There's not many left sided centre backs out there, so once the fantasy of Lamie returning was predictably quashed, this seems like the right signing to make.
Sir Tarmo
Boyes was one of our best players last season. Why didn’t Livi keep him?
ICTChris
Yeah, surprised that Livingston didn’t keep Boyes. He’s a good centre half in the Championship. Has anyone confirmed who the trialists today were? Callum Hapsell, Adam MacKinnon and ???

He's nowhere near good enough for us, he had a good chance with us to show his levels and he was consistently below par. He was out of contract to be fair but I wouldn't have been happy seeing us offer him a deal to stay. Could be massively wrong with this but Ryan McGowan over Boyes is a absolutely huge upgrade. With all respects, the best player in a team that was relegated isn't the levels required of a team that aims to win the league (not saying we will but that's the targets set by management.) TheScarf
If he stayed at Livi he’d be playing at exactly the same level he was absolutely fine at last season.

Truth be told as you struggled in the Premier you will find the Championship another tough league and it may be that the Championship could be your level, and anyway putting money to one side you will have better games instead of the slog against bigger money teams.

Sir Tarmo
There’s no Championship team that Boyes is ‘nowhere good enough for’. The Championship is a tough league to get out of for teams that don’t chuck money around instantly. Livi have made some decent signings in Smith, McAlear and Muirhead but I’m not sure a 35 year old Ryan McGowan is a ‘huge upgrade’ on Boyes to be honest.

A center half, in a team relegated with a positive goal difference, isnt good enough for that level? We didn't score enough fecking goals last season as management focused on defending and passing sideways. Nowt wrong with the lad
TheScarf
Yeah. We went down because we made zero attempt to score goals in a lot of games. You tend to go down when you don’t score. The defence, on the whole, was fine.

Having watched him over 35 appearances for us, I really have doubts if he'd be good enough to play for us at this level. We had 2 other defenders leave over the last 18 months that were better than him in De Lucas and Cancar. Boyes wouldn't get in ahead of McGowan, Clarke, Finlayson etc that we've got now.
