Coleraine's great start to the season continued yesterday with a 3-0 win over Carrick Rangers at the Ballycastle Road Showgrounds to give the Bannsiders 21 points from 7 games and a 3 point lead over second placed Linfield, who cruised to a 4-0 win over Ballinamallard United at Windsor. A match at home against the likes of Carrick is exactly the sort of game where Coleraine would have dropped points in previous years. So far this season, so good.

Glentoran recorded an excellent 3-1 at the Warden Street Showgrounds over  Ballymena. Could the Glens be this season's dark horses? Certainly a great improvement on last season's showing so far. Crusaders followed up their midweek win over Linfield with a disappointing 0-0 draw with Ards at Seaview. Great, if unexpected, point for Ards, though.

Glenavon won an entertaining contest with Cliftonville at Mourneview, 3-1, and the Reds finished with 10 men. Dungannon Swifts picked up 3 vital points at Stangmore against Warrenpoint Town. The Swifts continue to pick up points against fellow bottom 6 sides, which should stand them in good stead.

So. as already mentioned, Coleraine lead the way, 21 points, Linfield second, 18, Crusaders third on goal difference from Glenavon, both on 16 points, fifth are the revitalised Glentoran on 14 and there is a five point gap to sixth placed Dungannon who have 9 points.

Bottom half: Cliftonville and Ballymena United both on 7, Cliftonville with the less bad goal difference. Carrick Rangers are two points back on 5 in ninth place. Tenth are Ards with 4 points, 1 more point than Warrenpoint Town in eleventh. Bottom of the pile are Ballinamallard United with 1 point. Everyone has played 7 games.

Big games next week are Glentoran v Coleraine at The Oval, and Ballinamallrd United v Ballymena United at Ferney Park.

In Division One Ballyclare got knocked off top spot, losing 3-0 at Dixon Park to the PSNI, and Knockbreda beat fellow promotion hopefuls, Lurgan Celtic, 4-2, to go top. Larne are 3 points adrift at the bottom after losing 1-0 at home to Institute. Dergview pulled clear with a 3-1 win over Portadown, and Newry City got a point away to the Welders, to edge out The Derg on goal difference. Everybody has played 6 games.

Linfield top of the table for a few of hours after last night's 4-1 win at Warrenpoint. Town made a game of it in the first half but the Blues upped the ante after the break. Coleraine regained the leadership, thanks to a 0-0 draw at The Oval, where they played with 10 men for 70 minutes after Josh Carson was sent off. The Glens missed an injury time penalty into the bargain.

Crusaders dropped two more points with a 1-1 draw at home to Dungannon Swifts. Poor result for the Crues, but a good point for the Swifts. Glenavon saw off Ards 3-0, Cliftonville won at Taylors Avenue, 2-1, and Ballymena won the battle of the Uniteds with Ballinamalard, 3-1 to the Sky Blues in darkest Fermanagh.

And here it is in all its glory - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41374750

Coleraine top, despite losing their 100% record,  with 22 points from 8 games, Linfield second with 21, then a 2 point gap to third place Glenavon, who are 2 points in front of Crusaders who have 17 points. Fifth are Glentoran on 15 and then a gap to sixth placed Cliftonville who edge out Dungannon Swifts on goal difference, with 10 points.

Bottom half: The aforementioned Swifts, who are themselves ahead of stop/start Ballymena on goal difference. Then a bit of a gap to ninth placed Carrick who have 5 points, 1 more than Ards, who have 1 more than Warrenpoint Town, and still bottom with only 1 point are Ballinamallard. Carrick, Ards, Warrenpoint and Ballinamallard are in danger of losing touch with the teams above them, but I suppose everyone has played only 8 games.

Next Saturday Coleraine travel to Ballymena - wouldn't they just love to knock us off the top - Linfield go to Solitude, and Glentoran get a chance to show how they've improved when they take on Crusaders at The Oval on the Monday. Two big games at the bottom, Ballinamallard v Ards, must win for the Mallards, surely, and Warrenpoint Town v Carrick Rangers. On Friday there's the Mid Ulster derby at Mourneview with Glenavon taking on Dungannon Swifts.

In Division One, Ballyclare continue to falter, only managing a 1-1 draw away to Dergview, so are now third, table topping Knockbreda won again 1-0 at Portadown who are having a torrid time of it "downstairs", so Institute are now second after a 1-0 win at Newry. Larne still bottom after a 2-1  defeat at Loughgall, and are 3 points off Newry City.

It's never a good idea to bet on Irish League games. In fact, in my experience, it's never a good idea to bet on football matches in general...

I have nothing whatsoever to say about this stupid league this week .

Harrumph.

Cliftonville come back from 2 down to beat Linfeld at Solitude scoring 3 times in 13 minutes, while Coleraine see off Ballymena 2-0 to move 4 points clear. Ards win the 6 pointer at the bottom at Ballinamallard with two late goals after the Mallards are reduced to 10 men, and Warrenpoint and Carrick draw 2-2.

By all accounts we got what we deserved, but losing from that position is hard to take.

A goal in each half gave Coleraine a deserved win at Ballymena, 2-0 to the Bannsiders. Meanwhile, Linfield blew a 2 goal lead at Solitude and succumbed to a last minute Cliftonville winner, the Reds achieving an amazing last 13 minute comeback. Crusaders play tomorrow, Glenavon got a point on Friday.

Ards score two late goals at Ferney Park after Ballinamallard were reduced to 10 men before half time, and in the other relegation dogfight, Warrenpoint and Carrick get a point each in a 2-2 draw, Carrick snatching a draw with a late equaliser, after opening the scoring, then going behind.

Coleraine lead the way, unbeaten, with 25 points from 9 games (this stunning start is going to make our inevitable collapse even harder to stomach than usual) with Linfield 4 points back on 21, also from 9. with Glenavon in third on 20 points from 9, 3 in front of the Crues who play Glentoran tomorrow. Glentoran are fifth with 15 points, also from 8 games, with Cliftonville completing the top six with 13 points from 9.

Bottom half: Dungannon Swifts have 11 points from 9, one point more than eighth placed Ballymena, who have also played 9.  Ards have 7points, Carrick 6, Warrenpoint Town 4 with winless Ballinamallard taking up the rear with 1 point, all having played 9 games.

Ards entertain Glentoran next Saturday, while Dungannon are at home to Ballymena and Cliftonville face Warrenpoint.

Down in Division One (Championship), Ballyclare Comrades got back to winning ways, crushing Lurgan Celtic 4-0, Portadown lost again, 3-2 at the Welders, and Dergview got a good point at Knockbreda. Larne lost on Friday night at Newry City.

Knockbreda still top on 17 points, with Ballyclare second on 15, third Loughgall on goal difference with Institute fourth on 14.

Larne obviously still bottom with 2 points, now 5 points adrift of Dergview. Everybody has played 8 games.

Larne appear to be in danger of joining erstwhile top league companions Lisburn Distillery, Armagh City and Donegal Celtic in Division Two (Intermediate Division) although Distillery must fancy their promotion chances as they are currently top.
