«GRETNA FC 2008 have a bye in the first round of the South Challenge Cup.

And in the second round landed a plum home draw against last season Scottish Cup giant killers @darvelfc.»

They frame it as a positive, but will surely be a loss.

Not entirely sure about it being a loss, Darvel have lost most of last season’s squad.

Friendly against Threave ended in a 1-1 draw.

Threave is playing at level nine next season, but will hopefully have a successful season.

Was at game today. Gretna looked like a team of strangers. Not any flow to their game. Mostly long balls out of defence over the top of the lone striker. Nobody in red stood out, lot of work needing done in next few weeks.

A great night at Raydale Park - a full house and the chance to see a top display by Carlisle United Football Club's finest. Thanks to Paul Simpson for bringing his squad and to our team of 24 volunteers ensuring everything went smoothly. GRETNA FC 2008 0 CARLISLE UNITED 7

Hope the laddie is alright. Looked to have taken a right sore one near the end. Was holding his arm/shoulder as he was taken off.

Worrying for Gretna is that Hearts B were in cruise control most of the game. Thought they had a couple of breaks and chances but nothing more. Keeper and defence will be disappointed especially in the 2nd half

It'll be a season of pumpings and then relegation.

The situation of teams like Gretna and Dalbeattie is interesting to me. Are they better served being heavyweights in a glorified amateur league in the SOS or moving to the bottom rung of the West like Threave and eventually finding their level somewhere within that system?

If they had chosen West, they could have gotten relegated to the top division in the WOSFL.

I know, but I just don't think the thought of more weekly doings will appeal. The bottom rung sides in the West Prem are stronger than the dregs of the Lowland League too. Bonnyton gave an insight into what the likely outcome would be.

I think the likes of Threave, Gretna and Dalbeattie could find their level somewhere in division 2/3 of the West and I don't think theres any shame in that as opposed to staying camped in the South with a glass ceiling.

Out of the teams in the Lowland League, Gretna and Edinburgh University, are likely to face (at least) double relegations. But would probably be easier that way if they wanted to go west, than start at the bottom.

After those two teams it’s difficult to find which team is third from bottom though, so future promoted teams will have a tough division to get into.

That particular ship appears to have sailed. WOSFL have reached a max of 80 clubs, unofficially albeit. Only way open now is for a space to open up if West side go up to LLand. Or enough clubs to start a Tier 11 League.

Well, if a Lowland League western Scotland team gets relegated, it’s to the top division in the WOSFL. Even if an EOSFL team won the qualification. But maybe they wouldn’t be allowed in by application at the bottom tier, if they had first chosen the South of Scotland League.
