The Gretna 2008 Thread

It's been confirmed across multiple seasons that Braves would be relegated to the WoSFL.

The wording in the WoSFL docs seems to be protection against the 'Glasgow Wellington' scenario. A club that opts for the South of Scotland for the easier pathway to promotion, only to be relegated to the WoSFL based on geography.

^^^usually better not to engage with this guy, but worth noting that "a member of the SLFL at the time of the formation of the League" * works for East Kilbride but not for Albion Rovers, Broomhill, Cumbernauld Colts and Edusport/Caledonian Braves. While the last mentioned has been a member of another tier 5 league, the only implication for the other three appears to be that the move to WoS premier wouldn't be "automatic". The phrase highlighted above does appear to imply that Caledonian Braves are not eligible for membership in the WoS if they are viewed as the same club as Edusport. Clumsily drafted rules can lead to unintended consequences so that rule should probably be carefully redrafted.

Edit: * - guess that could also be read as member of the LL at the time of formation of the WoS if "the League" has been defined in the preamble that way but that doesn't encompass Albion Rovers and it's not clear that supercedes the implications of the following sentence given the "Any clubs" bit at the start.

Felt really sorry for the Gretna lads tonight (a sentence I never thought I'd type). They never had a hope in hell. They actually started quite well and probably would have had a penalty had the lad been a bit clever/dived. Once EK scored it was all one way traffic. Gretna can't possibly compete financially with EK/most sides (ironic, right?) and as much as EK/Hearts will be buzzing, that was a poor spectacle for the Lowland League tonight IMO.

Fair play to the Gretna lads who kept plugging away. Certainly couldn't criticise their effort.

Bit ironic that the current Gretna are suffering from what the originals inflicted on the lower league SFL sides with their over the top spending a couple of decades ago.

I remember their first visit to Central Park rolled up with their designer club suits that’s before you get onto the folk who ran them.

Actually thought Brooks seemed nice enough happy to stand of the terrace smoking his fags but some of the folk he had working for him were just tossers.

Funny how “Super Ro” always said it wasn’t about the money but he couldn’t replicate it in the Lowland League when there was actually no money😀

Feel a bit sorry for Bryan Gilfillan who has got his managerial career off to a bad start as he is a decent guy.

I'm sorry, am I getting in the way of tying yourself in knots over your latest conspiracy theory?

^^^have repeatedly had to put this guy on ignore because of this kind of bullshit. Pointing out that a rule is clumsily written is not a conspiracy theory. Caledonian Braves had a reserve team in the SoS up to last season so have had an ongoing association with an "other comparable league". The rule could be tweaked to the likely intended meaning by adding "or SPFL" to "a member of the SLFL at the time of the formation of the League" and changing the start of the last sentence to "Any other club...".

Pumped 9-2 at home today by Linlithgow.

And 9-2 flattered Gretna. They had a decent 10 minute spell but apart from that were pretty poor.  No's 7 and 11 looked OK. Resorted to some pretty poor challenges as well which was disappointing.

Poor crowd as well. Maybe about 150 with at least 100 being Rose fans.

If he was a good manager, he wouldn’t have went twelve years without a job (outwith a brief stint as Glenafton assistant, and coaching Annan under 13s).

Desperate times for Gretna, Is there a chance they won’t complete the season? It can’t go on like this.

I'd say 0%

They're in a battle with Edinburgh Uni again and there's still plenty of season left to get some distance from them.

More chance of a change of manager to salvage the season if things continue.

That's D&G teams for you.

Should just dump them all down to Tier 11 and save the time and hassle. 😁😁😁

Think its crazy that a team can join an association outwit their area.
Gretna is just common sense, if relegated they should go to the  SOSFL
Threave Rovers ffs, they should never have been voted into the EOSFL, (they are a Castle Douglas team), so should be SOSFL.
Glasgow Wellington, can and should only opt for the WOSFL but now they are fecked, as don't think it will happen Wellington going to the SOSFL and i suspect every club in the WOSFL will vote them out of joining the WOSFL

I remember all the arguments a few years back when the West Lothian league was joining the pyramid and a few teams mentioned going to the WOSFL, whoch was stupid but Harthill are the only team who had  a choice, quite rightly so, to join either the WOSFL or the EOSFL due to their boundary location but they chose the WOSFL but after a year thought, feck that and then went to the EOSFL.

It should be set in Stone, the boundaries for all areas of Scotland and any team that falls within a boundary MUST go to that association if relegated.

The SFA dropped the Highland/Lowland boundary as soon as it had been pretty well accepted by everyone once the Midland League was formed and joined the Northern pyramid. Why, I have absolutely no idea..

Luncarty, Letham and Tayport all wound up playing on the wrong side of the supposedly all important line of latitude even before the SFA changed the Club 42 rule, which was the only place it ever appeared in any rulebook. It was always a "red herring" as a poster from St Andrews United who was actually going to league meetings where these matters were being discussed tried to explain to people on here.

The Battle of the River Tay was a bloodbath on the old Junior forum.

It was house to house fighting in Hilltown according to some on here.

Funniest bit was when Luncarty said bye bye and Tayport went the other way.

Sure a few phones were chucked oot windaes.

Still see a few red faces over it on here yet.

Most keep quiet or else they're too stupid to remember what they posted.

Never said it was,  but it should be.

The boundaries should be the given boundaries, all set up and no deviation. so each club knows what association they will be relegated too etc...

We know at each level of Scottish Football there's corruption and power struggles, hopefully these things are found out and action taken
but then again when you get assholes at the SFA, like Doncaster  and the other muppet etc... being the directors or the defunct Conference league then it shows you what they want, power and money for themselves
