He was standing on the wrong side of the post against Brazil, and the ball hit him rather than him hitting the ball. But yeah, a similar distance out.

It certainly came to him quickly and he couldn't connect properly, but I don't think the angle should be part of his excuse.

Danny McGrain was actually a Rangers fan before he signed for Celtic.

The story was that the Rangers scout wanted to sign him, but when he/the deceased entity saw his full name was Daniel Fergus McGrain they backed off.

The hilarious irony being that he was/is a Protestant.

Christmas Eve 1977 was a good day for Dundee, Aberdeen even though “it began to look the kind of game where players might start rearranging each other’s teeth.” and Hearts.

Moments like this scarred me emotionally forever as a young lad ... then decades later just when you think the wound had finally healed after wee Lee had banged in his two free kicks at the Mt Florida end in the dying embers ... Armstrong has a brain fart and a millisecond later Arry bloody Kane leaves my barely recovered psyche in tattered shreds in the North Stand yet again ... surely no other nation treats it's loyal subjects this way ...?

It's a question of scale.  For Scotland it's in the qualifying and group stages, for England it's being done on pens or by the odd goal or by iffy refereeing and so on.  Every nation is going to feel that way because of the rarity of achievement.  Also that it's better to blow hot and cold than to be lukewarm all the time.  England tend to be very good in tournaments most of the time - when what you need is to be brilliant once, even if it means being rubbish once.

I reckon Wales as well could have even more of a grievance as to the slings and arrows of international fortune - leave aside 1978, their past failures meant the Welsh golden generation was saddled with impossible draws, until finally they break through, when it's 4 years too late.

And then there's the Dutch, who seem to have in their DNA the gene of self-destruction whenever they look like winning it all.

It appears to have been because they were donated together with watches by an outside benefactor.

SFA presumably felt - rather bizarrely in our eyes - that this sailed all too close to sponsorship, and/or represented additional inducements or bonuses, and therefore should not be done at a soiree.

SFA President was actually at the event, handed out the medals and got given a gold watch. SFA treasurer also present.

Humorously the East Fife manager actually forgot to bring the medals to the function in Leven and a car had to be sent to Bayview to collect them. All players also got watches and the manager a dressing case. They didn't give a medal to Herd - who played in the first match then got injured - as they weren't sure of SFA policy.

Interesting little snippet at the right hand foot of the page. A 13 year old Paul McStay signs S-Forms for Celtic.
