Monday 3rd March 1958 Representative match Heart of Midlothian 3-2 Scotland at Tynecastle, Edinburgh 30,000 There must be precious few club sides in the world who can say they've beaten their own national team but Hearts hold that accolade. This was the last of the series of trials, intended to refine the Scotland team for the World Cup in Sweden, which started the previous month with Scotland 3-2 Scottish League and Rangers 1-1 Scotland. Alex Young and Johnny Hamilton scored either side of HT to put hosts 2-0 up before Willie Ormond of Hibs and Bobby Collins of Celtic drew the national team level. Dave Mackay sparked pandemonium striking the winner with 30secs left. Scotland crashed 4-0 at Wembley in the Home Nations during April, drew with Hungary at Hampden in May, then warmed-up during the week before the tournament by winning 2-1 in Poland and 2-0 at Swedish club side IFK Ekilstuna. Wednesday 4th March 1970 Intermediate international England U23 A-A Scotland U23 abandoned at 3-1 on 60mins at Roker Park, Sunderland 12,885 To cancel an international once may be considered unfortunate - to do so twice must border on careless? That's exactly what happened at Roker Park in Sunderland. After the game was put off by snow in February 1969 it was decided to return the following year rather than play in Scotland. Peter Osgood gave the hosts a lead before HT, but after the break conditions descended into a farcical blizzard - in just 5mins the shivering spectators saw Osgood double his bag, Kidd head another, Tood score an OG to make it 3-1, then the referee abandon the game. Both sides were weakened by abscences on club duty. Celtic were beating Fiorentina and Leeds winning in Liege both in European Cup, and Manchester City were drawing in Coimbra on Cup-Winners' Cup business. Despite playing 1971's encounter in Scotland it too was disrupted... relocated to Hampden last-minute after the Pittodrie fire. Saturday 5th March 1983 Inter-City boys international Glasgow Boys v Bradford Boys at Hampden Park, Glasgow No idea what the score was - no result in Monday's edition of the Glasgow Herald. Perhaps somebody knows or can discover it. This was the 52nd meeting in a long-standing series between the 2 cities at U18 level, with Hampden the traditional venue for the match this end. Interesting to trace the fate of Glasgow's squad as adults. Kevin Gallacher played over 50 times for Scotland and had a long career with Dundee United and top English clubs. Sammy Johnston was a regular for St Johnstone then various other clubs in Scotland and Ireland. Ian Cameron had a long career particularly with St Mirren and Partick. Graham Hay appearred for Stranraer and other lower-league sides. Stuart McArthur achieved a year at Albion Rovers. Brian McGee never broke into Celtic's first-team, but did play for Partick a few times. Andrew Mulraney never broke into Clydebank's first-team and similarly Robert Kennedy at St Mirren. Cannot find any record of "R Gahagan", "M Keyes", "K Knight", "R Knox", "I McIlwham", "E McKenna", "I MacRitchie" or "G Stewart" playing at SFL level. So that's 1 international, 2 professionals, 2 part-timers (1 only brief), 3 near-misses and 8 apparently "sunk without trace". Blame the teachers strike. Broomfield or Kilbowie for example, or those bucket shaped bulb shrouds at Rugby Park and Ibrox for another. The big pylons where you could navigate your way to the ground easily from some way off, especially at night (obviously). Saturday 6th March 1954 Amateur Home Nations Scotland Amateurs 0-0 Wales Amateurs at Somerset Park, Ayr 1,500 Scotland drew a blank in their first ever game of the formal amateur championship. Until this season it had been unofficial with no trophy and no Northern Ireland v Wales game. Note it was still the Scottish Amateur FA making arrangements for the national side at this time. It proved a costly dropped point: as the Ulstermen ultimately lifted the title by 1pt from the Scots. Little surprise to find Queen's Park provided the bulk of the team alongside players from Bishop Auckland, St Mungo's Academy FP, Billingham Synthonia and Civil Service Strollers. This was Ayrshire's first taste of amateurism - previous games since the war went to Hampden, Ibrox, Aberdeen, Dumfries, Inverness. Elsewhere in the programme are listed all the players to have represented Scotland Amateurs since the SAFA had taken over for 1948-49. Goalie Hastie Weir moved to Motherwell and during his time at Fir Park he was teammates with Andy Weir (Scotland cap) and Ian Weir. Training was probably still a bit of a misnomer for part-time players in those days. He likely never saw his team-mates beyond arriving by train at Hampden or the away ground for a match. It's remarkable how little training even elite full-timers like the Famous Five at Hibs did (basically some running a couple of mornings, some golf, and occasional ball drills or 5-asides). Andy Anderson forged a career at Partick. Donald Watt spent many seasons at Dumbarton and East Stirlingshire. Saturday 9th March 1996 Scottish Cup, Fifth Round Caledonian Thistle 0-3 Rangers at Tannadice, Dundee 11,296 Inverness set their all-time record attendance on the distant shores of Tayside in this their first-ever Scottish Cup QF appearance. They had only been formed and entered SFL the prior season and were still playing in SFL3. Paul Gascoigne's double and an own goal from Brian Thomson proved the difference. Kerr provided the hosts a lead which Caldow levelled with a penalty upon cusp of HT.
