Raith Rov 0 Dundee 1 in Feb 1958 at Stark’s Park. The Raith are flat out to clear the ball in the Scottish Cup 2nd Round.

I think it’s Dundee clearing the ball as that’s Dundee left back Bobby Cox and sure the goalie is Bill Brown as in pictures from that era he’s regularly wearing a bunnet. The Dundee player on the right might be left half Doug Cowie.

This is creepy...

Not a word of a lie I woke up yesterday morning trying to remember if it was Brian or Colin Ahern who played for Clyde. Totally randomly.

Danny Masterton Ayr United 1976

A contemporary and sometime youth football team mate and sometime opponent of my Dad.

I’m told he was hard as nails, and you’d rather be on his team than against him.

He has now passed away:

That was the best Cowden team I saw.  Astonishing to recall that the 1970 League Cup semi-finalists were Rangers, Celtic, Cowdenbeath and Dumbarton.

I doubt we'll see that again.

Without disparaging the achievement it was of course not as hard as it looks since top tier clubs, except the 2 promoted sides (which included Cowdenbeath), occupied their own groups - then QFs were 'open draw'.

Neither faced a top division side during groups - and in QFs we find Dumbarton got Partick (another bottom tier side) while Cowdenbeath got Falkirk (the other promoted side). Indeed had they drawn each other in SFs and Dumbarton won, the Sons would've reached Final without ever facing a top tier side except promoted Cowdenbeath, who were on their way to finishing bottom and going straight back down.

Berwick's run to SFs in 1963-64 is similarly unremarkable... on closer inspection we won Group 9, for the worst 5 clubs in the league, then beat St Johnstone (just promoted) in supplementary playoff and Stirling (also bottom tier) in QFs.

There must have been various instances of clubs reaching SFs without ever facing a top tier opponent.

I'm certainly not going to disparage our semi-final achievement.  After a 0-0 draw in the first game we lost 4-3 aet to a Celtic team which five months earlier had played Feyenoord in the European Cup Final in Milan.

Had they drawn each other in the semi finals ? You really think there was even the remotest chance of that happening?
