There is no need to step down now and force by-elections that cost a lot of money. These people have taken a stand against a party leadership they see as failing. But they still represent their constituents. They still deal with local matters. (And the denials will be loud on that one.) In a months time they will be forgotten by all but political nerds. The people who screamed they wanted them out the party now have them out the party. All this is is a pantomime resigning of the whip. Corbyn's beloved Brexit that he has campaigned nearly 40 years is almost upon us. Then the real impact of politics aimed at the partys hard core rather than the nations voters will be about be delivered. Doing it this way makes it look like they've taken a big gamble, and are just bring honourable and principled. Half of me expects a media campaign where every day or two the group grows, with support from different areas. I've no doubt that their strings are being pulled as they're all too thick to have dreamed this little plot up by themselves, no doubt Blair, Campbell, Mandelson and some of their shady big business partners will have "skin in the game" as it were.
