YER SISTERS YER MAW Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 New HBO drama about the disaster due in early May on Sky Atlantic. Looks promising;https://thehooksite.com/sky-and-hbos-new-chernobyl-drama-looks-ridiculously-chilling/ 2 Quote
Flybhoy Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 (edited) There was a really good one on the BBC about ten years ago, a docu drama type thing, in the style of most WW2 films the main characters all spoke English, bizzarely Adrian Edmondson of The Young Ones played the main scientist leading the investigation. Fide Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Did anyone see this? Absolutely fascinating first episode. The senior management basically spent the first few hours in denial while the workers and firefighters were exposed to massive doses of radiation. Some really hard hitting scenes including one where the residents of Pripyat gathered on a bridge to look at what was happening and the kids of the town were dancing in radioactive "snow". Brilliant stuff. 0 Quote

Cheers for that. I'll probably watch it too, but it struck me that a documentary would be a better way of presenting things. 1 Quote
Salvo Montalbano Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Cheers for that. I'll probably watch it too, but it struck me that a documentary would be a better way of presenting things. We show that in school. It's really good and Edmonson is actually excellent. There's a wee bit about three quarters of the way through that always brings a lump to the throat. 0 Quote

Brilliant stuff. Watched it last night, quite enjoyed it. I do think I'd prefer it was Ukrainian/Russian actors with subtitles, I think programs lose some realism when they just use English. I don't know how accurate the story is in regards to how orders were dished out, but for me it highlighted how unsettling communism is. Folk with very real concerns backed up by evidence to be completely ignored because the state has said it's under control. Looking forward to the rest though. 0 Quote
Boghead ranter Posted May 10, 2019 Posted May 10, 2019 At least we know how the lassie from Line of Duty's lugs got so sticky-out : exposure to massive radiation. 2 Quote
D.A.F.C Posted May 10, 2019 Posted May 10, 2019 Great performance from the dad from Friday night dinner. Scariest thing for me was just how unprepared they were for a disaster. You saw it with 9/11 though people just want to help without thinking of their own safety first. 0 Quote
YER SISTERS YER MAW Posted May 12, 2019 Author Posted May 12, 2019 Just watched the pilot episode. Unreal that they didn't even have Geiger radiation counters at hand in the plant that could read high end levels of radiation in preparation for a possible disaster. 0 Quote
jimmy boo Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Good first episode and looking forward to the rest of it. 0 Quote
scottsdad Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Really enjoyed that. The geiger counter burnt out. They must have sent us a defective one We used another one. It maxed out. Also defective. I saw graphite lying around on my way in. The core must have exploded. You are mistaken. You didn't see that at all. How can a core explode? Explain it! Then they send the guy on a suicide mission to look at the core. Suicide and he knew it. 0 Quote
NJ2 Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Just watched the first episode, pretty gripping stuff! Anyone know how accurate it is as a representation of events? 0 Quote

Boghead ranter Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Powerful this week. The change in that Boris guy from his initial bluster to how he was once he realised the situation's gravity was good. Also those guys at the end, when their torches gave out... 0 Quote
Savage Henry Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Watched the first episode. Thought it was terrific. Had a feel of Tinker, Tailor in the visuals. 0 Quote
Mackie The Staggie Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 That ending to the second episode.........if that doesn't give you the fear then nothing will..... 0 Quote
D.A.F.C Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Those three guys should be household names, as important as landing on the moon. If not more so. Ukraine and other countries uninhabitable for hundreds of years. That’s arguably worse than the world wars. Its insane that nuclear reactors were even considered. 0 Quote
