A PSNI detective has been shot outside a school.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-northern-ireland-64706680

DCI John Caldwell was a high profile detective on crimes involving dissident republicans and drug traffickers - two groups who are also often one and the same.  To shoot someone outside a school, with his son and other young people in the vicinity gives a good indication of the sort of groups who want to continue with violence.

It was a leisure centre/sports complex, but same difference.

At least he's not dead.

Here's another couple of children witnessing/seeing the aftermath of their father's murder.

"A BOY left traumatised after finding the body of his murdered father has spent 25 years in a psychiatric hospital.

The teenager had set off on his bike to check on his soldier dad who had gone to tend cattle on the family farm.

He found Aubrey Abercrombie slumped over the wheel of the idling tractor after being shot in the back of the head."

Pat Finucane murder.

"On 12 February 1989, Finucane was shot dead at his home in Fortwilliam Drive, north Belfast, by Ken Barrett and another masked man using a Browning Hi-Power 9mm pistol and a .38 revolver respectively. He was hit 14 times.[22] The two gunmen knocked down the front door with a sledgehammer and entered the kitchen where Finucane had been having a Sunday meal with his family; they immediately opened fire and shot him twice, knocking him to the floor. Then while standing over him, the leading gunman fired 12 bullets into his face at close range.[23]

Finucane's wife Geraldine was slightly wounded in the shooting attack which their three children witnessed as they hid underneath the table."

Not quite sure spamming the thread with incidents from the 80s has of great relevance to the 'PR' today tbh. It's a different political landscape now.

Sweep sweep

?

ETA - Not exactly sure what you think I'm sweeping. If we were to post all the bad shit that the provisional IRA did back in the 80s this thread would be a lot lot longer. This thread is more to do with modern day though which is a fair bit different to back then.

That opening line you quoted  really is terribly written.

I tried linking to the article, the headline might have explained things a bit better, but the url was massive so just C&Ped the opening sentences.

Shooting the detective who's on to you sounds like the plot from one of the bad Columbo episodes in the 80s. Pathetic behaviour. I'd like to think the culprits will be found fairly swiftly. Hopefully the guy's 'life changing' injuries aren't 'life limiting'.

Nobody will be convicted for this.

Just as nobody has been convicted of Lyra McKee's murder.

Nor has anybody been convicted of the murder of Constable Ronan Kerr (also in Omagh).
