Scotland vs Argentina - Wednesday 19th June, 8pm

Just looking at the groups and potential third place finishers.
Group A
Nigeria on 3 points but with France to play. Lose and they’ll inevitably have a worse goal difference if Scotland win.
Group B
China or Spain likely. If they draw with each other they’ll be out of our reach. Ideally, Spain to beat China by 2 goals leaving them on -2 goal difference
Group C
Australia should beat Jamaica. Brazil on +2 so unless they get hammered by Italy then should finish with a better record
Group E
Cameroon and NZ both on 0 points, -3 goal difference and playing each other. A draw would be perfect. Either wins by just one goal and they’d still finish short.
Group F
Chile and Thailand on zero points and playing each other. Chile the only ones with an outside chance but currently sitting on -5 goal difference. Would need to beat Thailand by 4 at least
All presumes a Scotland win of course which is the ultimate wild card
Group E - if New Zealand win by two they'd also need to score three to match a 1-0 for us, as we'd have scored three. They've not scored any so far.

If NZ v Cameroon ends 3-1 to NZ, or 2-0 to Cameroon, and we win 1-0, or any consequent scores above that, we'll be tied with the third placed team in that group. At that point we'd be separated on fair play points.

Going out on fair play points is amazingly one of the few ways we've not been eliminated from a tournament, so it would be the Scottish thing to do.

Can't believe how much I've missed the mass calculus that comes with Scotland in a major tournament.

Just checked and on fair play points we are on -3, NZ are on 0 and Cameroon on -5. I can see us v Argentina getting niggly and our centre halves are always a yellow waiting to happen, so it doesn't look good for us on that front.

Today's ideal results for Scotland...

In the 5pm games...

Spain beat China 1-0, 2-1 or by two or more goals OR China beat Spain by three or more goals

AND

South Africa lose, draw or win by one goal against Germany

In the 8pm games...

France beat Nigeria

OR

South Korea beat Norway by exactly four goals.

If Scotland win....

We're a stick on to finish above the 3rd place team in group A, probably Nigeria after they lose to France.  Don't worry about it.

Not a great chance with group B and virtually none with group C.  Don't worry about them.

We'll almost certainly need to wait from group E and F.  F gives us an excellent chance as realistically Chile need to win by at least 5 goals.

In short, if we win, we almost certainly qualify.

Even a narrow win for the Chinese would be enough if we can win by a couple on Wednesday.  At least it would give us a target to aim for...

I don’t fancy South Africa to keep Germany to fewer than two goals.

The South African defending for the goal just now was enough to make Shelley Kerr embarrassed.

Was just about to say there's zero incentive with Germany clearly going to win vs SA for Spain vs China to be anything other than a draw. 6/4 in play if you are of a cynical mind.

China and Spain playing like they'd take the draw right now. Not quite West Germany v Austria though, Spain are trying to be progressive without committing numbers, but China are rigidly set up to defend. We're getting no joy from this group.

It was the other way round, only a German defeat by two or more goals could have adversely affected Scotland.

As it is, I think it's safe to say we can concentrate on the China Spain game.
